Red Sox at Tigers picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Sox 3, Tigers 2

Moneyline

BET RED SOX (-120).

Boston has won 2 straight road games, while Detroit lost its last home outing.

The Red Sox have also won 2 of the last 3 meetings between these teams, are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings overall, and are 3-0 in the last 3 in Detroit.

Be aware that Detroit is the hotter team and is 7-3 in its last 10 games, while the Red Sox are 4-6 across that same span.

Run line/Against the spread

BET TIGERS +1.5 (-165).

Not only is Detroit the hotter team entering this matchup, but it has been the much better team ATS this year. The Tigers are 72-63 ATS on the year, while the Red Sox are only 61-73 ATS this season.

Be aware that Boston has been much better ATS on the road (38-27) than it has been overall this year.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 9 (-125).

The Under has hit in each of Detroit’s last 3 games and each of Boston’s last 3. The Under also hit in the last meeting in Detroit.

This is a lean because the Under is 5-5 in the last 10 meetings, 5-5 in Boston’s last 10 games, and 5-4-1 in Detroit’s last 10. The O/U has been very even across the board.

The Tigers were unable to carry momentum into their home opener after starting the week by surprisingly taking 2 of 3 games from the defending World Champion Houston Astros. C Jake Rogers socked his 2nd home run while driving in his 3rd and 4th runs of the season.

Red Sox at Tigers picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Sox 6, Tigers 4

Moneyline

RED SOX (-145) is the play against the lowly Tigers.

Boston has dominated this series recently and has won the last 6 meetings. The Red Sox are 8-3 in their previous 11 trips to the Motor City.

The Red Sox are also 5-1 in the past 6 games against a left-handed starting pitcher dating back to last season while winning 4 of their last 5 games against the AL Central.

Run line/Against the spread

RED SOX -1.5 (+110) is worth a look at plus money, but tread lightly.

Boston covered the run line in Thursday’s series opener but is still just 2-5 on the run line this season when favored. However, the BoSox have won by 2 or more runs 5 times as favorites in their 6-game win streak vs. Detroit.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

OVER 8.5 (-105) is the lean.

The Over cashed in the series opener, and the total has gone high in 4 straight on the road for the Red Sox dating back to last season. The Over is also 5-1 in the past 6 against AL Central foes dating back to last season.

The wind will also be blowing out to the left-center field power alley at a 7-10 mph clip, helping matters for Over bets.

Analyzing Thursday’s Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with expert MLB picks, predictions and best bets.

The Boston Red Sox (2-4) and the Detroit Tigers (2-4) open a 3-game series Thursday. First pitch at Comerica Park is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Sox vs. Tigers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting of 2023. Red Sox won the series 5-1 in 2022.

The Red Sox opened this season taking 2 of 3 games at home against the Baltimore Orioles but suffered a 3-game sweep at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates from Monday-Wednesday. Boston scored just 8 runs over the Pittsburgh series — including a pair of 4-1 defeats on Tuesday and Wednesday — after scoring 9 runs in each of its first 3 games.

The Tigers were swept in a 3-game series on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays to open the season, but Detroit surprised the defending World Series champion Houston Astros on the road to kick off the week, winning 2 of 3 outings. The Over cashed in each of the 3 games in Houston, and 4 of the past 5 games overall.

Red Sox at Tigers projected starters

LHP Chris Sale vs. RHP Spencer Turnbull

Sale (0-0, 21.00 ERA) makes his 2nd start of the season. He was hammered for 7 ER on 7 H (including 3 HR) and 2 BB with 6 K across 3 IP in a no-decision against the Orioles Saturday.

  • Has made just 12 starts during the regular season since undergoing Tommy John surgery prior to the 2020 season.
  • Hasn’t faced the Tigers since April 23, 2019.
  • Last faced the Tigers at Comerica Park on July 22, 2018, twirling 6 scoreless IP with 2 H, 0 BB and 9 K in a win.

Turnbull (0-1, 27.00 ERA) makes his 2nd start of the season. He allowed 7 ER on 8 H and 3 BB with 3 K across 2 1/3 IP in a 63-pitch appearance and loss Saturday at Tampa Bay.

  • Had Tommy John surgery in July 2021, and Saturday’s start was his first since June 4, 2021.
  • Makes his first home start since a win over the New York Yankees on May 29, 2021.
  • Last faced the Red Sox on May 6, 2021, allowing 4 R (2 ER) with 7 H and 0 BB with 3 K in 3 IP in a no-decision at Fenway Park.

Red Sox at Tigers picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Sox 7, Tigers 6

Moneyline

The RED SOX (-150) ended up winning against the O’s in Sale’s first outing despite his shaky start. The Tigers managed 2 wins in 3 outings in Houston, but the home opener will be spoiled by a Boston lineup due for a breakout after scoring just 2 runs in its last 2 games.

Run line/Against the spread

The TIGERS +1.5 (-135) aren’t priced out of line if you want a little insurance on the run line.

Detroit should be able to pile up some offense in this battle of pitchers just making their way back from long-term injuries. Expect a wild home opener in the Motor City, most likely decided by bullpens. Boston has managed a 3.77 bullpen ERA so far, while Detroit has a 5.55 bullpen ERA. That will be the difference.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

OVER 7.5 (-120) is the best play on the board.

The Tigers have allowed 4 or more runs in 5 of 6 games so far, and the Detroit pitching staff ranks 29th with a 6.23 ERA to date.

The Red Sox have allowed 4 or more runs in each contest, and Boston is just ahead of Detroit’s staff with a 6.00 ERA (28th).

Expect a beer-league softball game with plenty of runs to break out at Comerica. The winds will also be blowing out from right field to left field at a 14-17 mph clip, helping the offense.

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (64-45) and Detroit Tigers (52-58) tangle in a Thursday matinee to close out their three-game series in the Motor City. First pitch at Comerica Park is slated for 1:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Red Sox vs. Tigers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

LHP Martin Perez is the projected starting pitcher for the Red Sox. He is 7-7 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 7.6 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 through 98 2/3 IP spanning 21 starts.

  • Was rocked for 3 home runs and 6 ER in his last start and owns a 6.69 ERA over 10 starts since June 8. Pitched 4 or fewer innings in three of his last four starts.
  • Has allowed a walk-heavy .856 OPS in past meetings against active Tigers hitters.

LHP Tarik Skubal is the projected starter for the Tigers. Over 21 games (19 starts), he is 6-10 with a 4.53 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 through 105 1/3 IP.

  • Coming off dodgy back-to-back outings with 9 ER allowed over 10 2/3 total IP and owns a 5.86 ERA across five starts since July 3. The missteps over his last two starts were fueled by a combined 6 home runs.
  • Has pitched through a weak schedule, as only four of his 21 games were against teams ranked in the top 10 by OPS.

Prediction

Tigers 6, Red Sox 4

Money line (ML)

The BoSox and Bengals split the first two games of this series. Boston’s 4-1 victory Wednesday night snapped a 5-game losing skid.

Detroit has been solid in the second half at 12-7 since the break. Detroit owns a robust .795 OPS in the second half and is 11-2 over its last 13 series finales. The Tigers are a solid 31-24 in their home yard.

Boston is a top-five offensive club overall, but the Red Sox have posted a pedestrian .677 OPS over their last dozen games.

BACK THE TIGERS (+115).

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the run line with this contest set up for an Over and more big-score variance chipping away at the probability of a 1-run game.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both starters cough up their fair share of hard contact, and both will hand off to struggling bullpens. Both clubs have right-leaning lineups (the Tigers more so), and that cuts into problem areas for Perez (.851 OPS allowed vs. right-handed bats) and Skubal (.825).

TAKE THE OVER 9.5 (-125).

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (63-45) will look to put an end to their five-game losing skid when they take on the Detroit Tigers (52-57) Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Comerica Park. Let’s analyze the lines around the Red Sox vs. Tigers with MLB picks and predictions.

LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (7-6, 5.60 ERA) will be making his 21st start of the year. He has a 1.42 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9 and 10.9 K/9 through 99 2/3 IP.

  • Rodriguez’s skills suggest he should have a much lower ERA. He has been hurt by a .369 BABIP that is well above his .308 career mark, as well as by a 64.0% LOB% (73.7% career).
  • Has made 13 road starts on the season where he has posted a 5.21 ERA and 10.4 K/9 over 65 2/3 IP.

Casey Mize (6-5, 3.41 ERA) will be making his 21st start of the year as well. He has a 1.11 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9 and 7.1 K/9 through 111 IP.

  • The Tigers tapped the brakes on Mize’s workload in July, holding him to 4 IP or less and fewer than 60 pitches in three consecutive starts. He got back up to 7 IP in his last start and didn’t allow any runs, although he whiffed just 2 batters.
  • He has a strong 3.15 ERA with just 4 HR allowed in 45 2/3 IP across nine home starts.

Red Sox at Tigers, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 9:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Sox -155 (bet $155 to win $100) | Tigers +125 (bet $100 to win $125)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Sox -1.5 (+105) | Tigers +1.5 (-130)
  • Over/Under: 9.5 (O: +105 | U: -130)

Prediction

Red Sox 5, Tigers 4

Money line (ML)

The Red Sox come into the game in the midst of their longest losing skid of the season. They still carry a 30-23 road record, which is tied for the 5th best mark in the league.

The Tigers have won 12 of 18 games since the All-Star break and 12 of their last 14 at home dating back to early July.

This is a pretty even matchup that could go either way. A small play on the Tigers is tempting, but the call here is to PASS on the money line.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Rodriguez has pitched better than his ERA would suggest. He’s walking fewer batters than ever before while striking them out at the highest rate of his career. However, while he is due for some better fortune he’s not a great bet to completely shut down the Detroit bats.

Mize on the other hand has been a little lucky to record a 3.41 ERA to this point. However, he has pitched well at home and kept the ball in the park, and he should be able to keep this game close.

Side with the TIGERS +1.5 (-130)

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under has hit in each of Boston’s last five games against a right-handed starter and is 7-1 in Detroit’s last eight contests against a left-hander.

Neither offense is likely to have a huge day in this one, so look for these trends to continue and take UNDER 9.5 (-130)
