Boston College Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Eagles miss from the Coastal Division?

The Eagles catch a break by playing Duke – it’s on a Friday night – and getting Virginia Tech isn’t all that bad considering it’s early in the season and gets a road game out of the way early. Here’s the big plus …

It means they miss Miami, North Carolina, Pitt, and Virginia. They don’t have to play Georgia Tech, either.

Boston College Football Schedule What To Know: The Eagles will feel like they’re NEVER at home

They might be happy with who the miss from the Coastal Division, but there’s a big, big problem. There’s just one game – that date with Duke – in Chestnut Hill from October 15th through the regular season finale against Syracuse. That’s four road games in five weeks with Duke the cream filling in the middle.

Oh yeah, and the last game in the road run is at Notre Dame.

Boston College Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Boston College is about to have a tough time.

Not only are there the six road games with the weight of the slate backloaded to the second half, but at Wake Forest, at NC State, at Notre Dame, at Florida State, at Virginia Tech will all be tough to get by, and getting Clemson at home isn’t a sweetener.

It’s going to be a good Eagle team that might have to scratch and claw for a winning record.

Boston College Eagles College Football Preview 2021: Offense

That’s what you call a pivot. It’s not like Boston College ignored the passing game under former head coach Steve Addazio, but Jeff Hafley quickly changed around the entire tenor of the program immediately.

The Eagles ran 361 times in 2020 under the new regime. There were two fewer games, but the 2019 team ran 659 times.

And in two fewer games, Hafley’s version matched the six-win total of 2019. It all kicked in because …

– Phil Jurkovec has settled the quarterback position. The former Notre Dame transfer hit 61% of his passes in the fast-paced offense averaging eight yards per pop, and Dennis Grosel was able to keep on throwing when he had to step in. Now the offense has a year under its belt and the receiving corps Is fantastic.

Zay Flowers blew up in the new passing offense. There might not have been as many big plays down the field, but the volume went up, and Flowers benefitted with a massive 56-catch, 892-yard season with nine touchdowns.

Star TE Hunter Long is done, but the wideouts are there to do even more with Jaelen Gill and CJ Lewis bringing size along with the production.

Give the offensive line a wee bit of credit for surviving through the change. It didn’t do enough for the ground game, but it got the job done when it came to keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Alec Lindstrom is one of the ACC’s best centers, Ben Petrula is one of the top guards, and the rest of the line should be better with everyone expected back. However, there might be some shuffling to get more out of the ground game.

240-pound back David Bailey was supposed to bust out as the new main man, but it didn’t happen and now he’s transferring out. Super-senior Travis Levi is back – he’s a smaller, shiftier back – and Pat Garwo adds a little power. Alec Sinkfield is coming in from West Virginia to be a part of the rotation.

Games vs. The Coastal: at Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech

Missed Teams From The Coastal: Duke, Miami, North Carolina, Pitt, Virginia, Virginia Tech

Boston College Eagles Football Schedule Analysis: It couldn’t be softer and fluffier to start a season than Colgate, at UMass and at Temple. The Missouri game makes up for it, and starting out the season at Clemson certainly plays a role. After dealing with the Colgate thing, five of the next seven games are on the road. However, three of the last four – all in November – are at home around a road date with Georgia Tech.

Boston College Eagles Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: 9-3. Assume a loss at Clemson and at least two other defeats along the way, but the Eagles don’t get Notre Dame or North Carolina. This won’t be a good enough team to roll at will through the ACC – or Missouri – but if everything goes right, there’s no one on the slate outside of Clemson that BC can’t beat.

Boston College Eagles Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: 5-7. There’s no real excuse with this slate to not at least get to .500. Clemson is a given loss, but the Eagles drop the road dates to Louisville and either Syracuse or Georgia Tech, too. Missouri is a loss, Virginia Tech is a loss, and Florida State and/or Wake Forest in a wildly disappointing run.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Boston College Eagles Offense 3 Things To Know

New head coach Jeff Hafley comes over as a defensive coach who worked in the NFL before helping to turn Ohio State’s D into a monster as Ryan Day’s defensive coordinator. The offensive side will be turned over to coordinator Frank Cignetti, the Green Bay Packer quarterback coach and former NFL OC with the Rams and Steelers.

He’ll want to wing the ball around and operate with a steady tempo, and he might have his quarterback in place to do it.

Anthony Brown transferred to Oregon, but Dennis Grosel is back after hitting just 48% of his passes for 983 yards and nine scores with three picks – and he ran for two scores – and five options in all are in the mix.

However, be shocked if Notre Dame transfer Phil Jurkovec isn’t the main man right away. the 6-4, 227-pound former big-time recruit only threw 12-of-18 passes for 222 yards and two scores for the Irish, but he can run, and he’s got the arm to push the passing game deep.

The receiving corps didn’t to too much in the former run-heavy offense, but the experience and talent are there. Hunter Long is one of the ACC’s most dangerous tight ends – the 6-5, 255-pound junior led the team with 509 yards and two scores, averaging over 18 yards per catch.

Also back is top WR Kobay White after a flirtation with the transfer portal, but he only caught 29 passes for 460 yards and a team-high five scores. Sophomore Zay Flowers is the only other returning receiver who caught more than three passes.

The offensive line should be fantastic. Three starters are back with the line working around All-ACC tackle Ben Patrula and all-star center Alec Lindstrom. The line led the conference and was fourth in the nation in fewest sacks allowed, and it was even better at blasting away for the league’s top running game. However, the main part of the puzzle is gone from the ground attack.

AJ Dillon will be blasting away for the Green Bay Packers, but 6-1, 240-pound junior David Bailey has the ability to take over after helping the cause with around ten carries per game with 844 yards and seven scores, with a 181-yard, two-score day against NC State, and with 172 yards and two touchdowns against Syracuse in tandem with Dillon.

Speedy Travis Levy will get a few carries, and he’ll be used as a receiver, and in the mix might be 6-0, 235-pound sophomore Javian Dayne – son of all-time NCAA leading rusher and Wisconsin legend, Ron Dayne.
