Major travel day for UNC baseball team ends safely at College World Series

How did UNC baseball fans spend their Tuesday afternoon?

There isn’t a fan base in the entire country, at least from what we’ve watched this season, that is more passionate about college baseball than that of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

UNC fans packed Boshamer Stadium over the past two weekends, cheering North Carolina through the Chapel Hill Regional and Super Regionals, on through to the College World Series. The Diamond Heels treated the thousands in attendance to multiple come-from-behind victories and walk-off wins, including Vance Honeycutt’s moonshot that ended Game 1 of the Super Regional against West Virginia.

If there weren’t a net that extended through foul territory, I can bet you there would’ve been a field storming at The Bosh.

Sadly, Game 2 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional was the last time North Carolina plays baseball at home this season. It wasn’t the last time fans were able to see their favorite players in Chapel Hill, though.

On Tuesday, June 11, when UNC departed for the College World Series, it invited its loyal fans to Boshamer Stadium for one final send-off.

Later on Tuesday, the Diamond Heels’ official X account announced the team touched down in Omaha.

We can’t promise that these same North Carolina fans will be in Omaha, but you can bet that thousands will travel to the Midwest and watch their favorite team.

UNC will start chasing its first national title on Friday, June 14 at 2 p.m. ET, as it hosts ACC rival UVA to open the College World Series.

Boshamer Stadium sets attendance record in Diamond Heels CWS berth-clinching victory

Chapel Hill, North Carolina was the place to be this weekend if you’re a college baseball fan.

If you wanted to watch the Chapel Hill Super Regional in person last weekend, good luck.

Not too long after UNC announced tickets went on sale to the public, UNC announced those same tickets were sold out.

If you consistently attend North Carolina baseball games, though, you’ll know there’s viewing loopholes. One spot is just behind the right field fence, where you get a great view of Boshamer Stadium through the metal holes, while the other is atop Karen Shelton Stadium beyond the right field viewing area.

Fans took full advantage of those free spots, pulling up plenty of lawn chairs and lining the top row of UNC’s field hockey stadium.

Those who were lucky enough to get in the gates watched quite the series against West Virginia. Vance Honeycutt walked off Game 1 with a moonshot over the netting behind the left field fence, while Dalton Pence hustled over to first base and recorded the Diamond Heels’ final out of Game 2, sending them to their first College World Series since 2018.

Not only was Saturday night’s Game 2 a historic win, but it set a Boshamer Stadium attendance record with 4,491 fans.

The Bosh only holds 4,100 fans, but has plenty of standing room only space on the concourse behind home plate. There is general admission seating along the first base side during the regular season, but we weren’t able to look at available tickets in time to see if the postseason carried that option.

You can bet that even more North Carolina fans will make the trip to Omaha, Neb. for the College World Series, which start on Friday, June 14.

Chapel Hill Regional hero Alex Madera praises Boshamer Stadium crowd

Just how loud was the Boshamer Stadium crowd Monday night? Ask Alex Madera, who drove in the game-winning run.

I still can’t get over how the UNC baseball team came back and beat LSU on Monday night, closing out the Chapel Hill Regional with a dramatic, 4-3 victory.

The ability to comeback typically isn’t an issue for North Carolina, given how hot their bats are swinging. Vance Honeycutt, Parks Harber and Casey Cook can mash a home run at any time, but virtually everyone in the Diamond Heels’ lineup is a threat, as the above three and Anthony Donofrio, Alex Madera and Friday night hero Gavin Gallaher all sport batting averages over .300.

That wasn’t the case on Monday night.

After UNC scored two quick runs in the first inning, its bats went ice-cold. North Carolina managed just two hits over the second-eighth innings, while the defending College World Series champion Tigers came back for a 3-2 lead in the third.

Every team needs clutch hitting, though, which the Diamond Heels provided plenty of in the ninth and 10th innings.

UNC starting shortstop Colby Wilkerson battled back from an 0-2 count, singling to left field and tying the game at three in the ninth.

In the top of the 10th (we agree, it’s weird North Carolina was the visiting team), Diamond Heels starting second baseman Alex Madera drove a hard ground ball into center field for a 4-3 lead, practically causing Boshamer Stadium to shake. UNC held on to win by that same score, advancing it to the Super Regionals against West Virginia.

What’s wild to think, though, is Madera wasn’t even in Chapel Hill at this time last year.

He was playing at Division-III Arcadia University in Pennsylvania, where crowds paled in comparison to The Bosh.

“It’s incredible,” Madera said about the Boshamer Staduium crowd on Monday night. “There’s nothing like it. You know, obviously at a small Division III school, you’re playing in front of maybe 100, 200 people max. It’s all families mainly. Nobody’s really getting into it that much. Just to hear that tonight, it was it was incredible.”

If Madera thought Monday night’s crowd was wild, imagine how hectic this Friday and Saturday will be, as North Carolina will be playing for its first College World Series berth since 2018.

Can Madera provide more heroics in the next round?

Chapel Hill Regional is sold out for NCAA Baseball Tournament

This weekend is shaping up to be a thrilling one for the University of North Carolina baseball program, with the news that the Bosh is sold out for the entire weekend.

This weekend is shaping up to be a nice one for the University of North Carolina baseball program, with it announced that the Bosh is sold out all weekend. UNC will host the regional round of the NCAA tournament, bringing Wofford, LIU, and LSU to Chapel Hill.

If you want to snag a ticket for any of those games, your best luck will be hitting an aftermarket site to secure any, and they are going for a pretty penny. UNC currently has the best odds to come out of the Chapel Hill Regional on top, with LSU a close second. Regardless of the outcome, fans will be in for a treat with clear skies of an average of 80 degrees expected this weekend. Sunday victory sets new program record for consecutive wins at The Bosh

Boshamer Stadium has been the home for UNC baseball since 1972. The Diamond Heels just set a new stadium record on Sunday afternoon.

As we get deeper into college baseball season, we’ll start to see the best teams separate themselves from the rest of their conference opponents.

There are some early-season surprises, such as Wake Forest already reaching double-digit loss totals and Kentucky being ranked third, while programs like Arkansas and East Carolina are ranked Top-10 as expected.

Another team living up to its expectations is North Carolina, which swept Notre Dame over the weekend and maintained its hold atop the ACC Coastal Division. UNC has largely dominated opponents over the season, but particularly at Boshamer Stadium, where it’s 23-0.

With Sunday’s 10-3 victory over the Fighting Irish, the Diamond Heels set a program record with their 27th consecutive home victory, a streak which extends back to last season.

North Carolina is averaging nearly 10 runs per home game, with its 321 total runs ranking 15th nationally. The 30 runs scored against Notre Dame were UNC’s most since its March 1-3 series against Rutgers.

Vance Honeycutt, the Diamond Heels’ star center-fielder who is projected to be an early first-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, is tied for sixth nationally with 50 runs. He’s one of nine North Carolina players with at least 20 runs.

While UNC’s offense was the story this past weekend, its pitching enjoyed a much-needed rebound, allowing just five runs over three games. It was the Diamond Heels’ best pitching series of the year.
