Kansas football unveils all-red uniforms ahead of upcoming games at Arrowhead Stadium

The University of Kansas football team unveiled new all-red uniforms for their games that are to be played at Arrowhead Stadium this season.

This offseason, the University of Kansas announced the first phase of its two-phase stadium renovation of the 103-year-old David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. With construction to take place well into 2025, the Jayhawks will head East on I-70 to play their home games in Kansas City.

Children’s Mercy Park, home of Kansas City’s professional soccer team Sporting KC, will host several of the team’s outings, but the majority of KU’s home games will be played at Arrowhead Stadium.

To pay homage to the back-to-back Super Bowl champs and current occupants of their temporary home, KU unveiled new all-red uniforms for the upcoming season.

Arrowhead Stadium has seen its share of college football games since its opening in 1972, most notably the 2007 ‘Border War’ showdown between the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas, where #4 Mizzou narrowly beat #2 Kansas 36-28.

The #22 Jayhawks will suit up in their new threads for their first game at Arrowhead on September 28th against the TCU Horned Frogs.

A late comeback attempt by the Colorado State Rams falls short as the Wyoming Cowboys win the Border War 24-15. Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl now has improved to 7-3 against the Rams.

The Cowboys were carried to the win by the team’s rushing attack, and heavy use of Harrison Waylee, who led the team with 140 yards from scrimmage.

The Highlights

Wyoming started the scoring early with a 30-yard John Hoyland field goal on their first drive of the game. Waylee added 21 yards on the ground to get the Pokes into field goal range.

A CSU drive with a 13-yard rush by Avery Morrow, a 14-yard reception by Dallin Holker and a 15-yard reception by Dylan Goffney ended with zero points. A 47-yard field goal attempt by Jordan Noyes left the Cowboys with the ball at their own 30-yard line.

The Pokes would score again to start the second quarter with a back shoulder 9-yard touchdown throw in the corner of the endzone to Gunner Gentry. This extended the lead to 10-0.

But by mid-second quarter, CSU would utilize Louis Brown IV for 42 yards including an 18-yard touchdown catch.

Following a Clayton Stewart 72-yard punt, Wyoming maintained a 10-7 lead heading to halftime.

Beginning the second half, the Cowboys ate up five and a half minutes to the CSU 35-yard-line through a rushing attack of Andrew Peasley, with 28 yards, and Waylee, 10 yards. Hoyland would attempt a 52-yard field goal but miss it, his second missed field goal of the game.

However, Wyoming would get the ball back after a Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi interception to Easton Gibbs. The Cowboys would respond with a six-play-drive capped off with an 11-yard touchdown to Ayir Asante. Pokes up 17-7.

Following another Fowler-Nicolosi pick, this time by Shae Suiaunoa, the Cowboys’ rushing attack could not be stopped as Sam Scott concluded the eight-play drive with a 6-yard touchdown.

CSU refused to quit down 17 points, and after a Peasley interception to Dom Jones, the Rams scored quickly with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Goffney, his second. Along with a two-point conversion by a Tory Horton pass to Fowler-Nicolosi, CSU only trailed 15-24.

But after a late Rams drive to the Wyoming 24-yard line, Fowler-Nicolosi fumbled the ball, and the Cowboys’ Tyce Westland ran it to the CSU 3-yard line.

Wyoming would burn 1:20 off the clock but failed to score. The Rams would attempt a last-minute miracle, similar to their victory over Boise State. But, after only traveling 45 yards, the Rams would turn it over on downs and allow Wyoming to raise the Bronze Boot for the third straight year.

Waylee became the star of the game, totaling 128 rushing yards and a 12-yard reception. Peasley would appear in big moments in drives as well rushing for 49 yards, several coming on third downs.

Despite the interception, Peasley would finish with a solid day’s work, throwing 15 completions on 22 attempts for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Asante and Gentry finish with the receiving touchdowns.

The Suiaunoa and Gibbs interceptions led the defense in a positive turnover battle. Gibbs recorded the only sack for the Pokes’ defense on the day.

For the Rams, Fowler-Nicolosi ended the day 24-for-42 with 220 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Horton remained fairly quiet, exiting the game for injury for moments in the game. He finished with 7 receptions for 58 yards. Brown would reel in 55 yards and a touchdown, and Goffney racked up 37 yards and a touchdown.

Up Next?

The bowl-eligible Cowboys will travel to Las Vegas to play UNLV in another late Friday battle at 7:45 p.m. PST.

The Colorado State Rams will host the San Diego State Aztecs Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. MST.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid picks side in Missouri-KU Border War rivalry

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid has chosen a side ahead of the basketball game between Mizzou and KU on Saturday. | from @TheJohnDillon

The matchup against Las Vegas isn’t the only thing on the mind of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid this week, as Mizzou plays Kansas in basketball for the first time since 2012 on Saturday. One of the most intense and bitter rivalries in college sports, the affectionately named Border War between the two schools has its share of history, which Reid himself took part in as an offensive line coach in Columbia in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

He shared his thoughts on the renewed rivalry during his media availability on Friday, telling reporters that he has been to both schools for various reasons, but that his allegiance lies with his old employer.

“I’ve met Coach (Bill) Self since I’ve been here and he’s a heck of a coach and good guy,” Reid said. “I had a chance to go to  Lawrence—I wasn’t shaking when I went in there, but man it was a great event. But my heart is with Missouri because I’ve been there.

“It’s such a great rivalry. I talk to our young kids here, we’ve got a kid from Kansas State, we’ve got a kid from Missouri playing for us right now, a couple of Kansas State guys actually, and they never played against each other and I just go, ‘Man, that rivalry was phenomenal,’ and so is the KU-Missouri rivalry. I thought it was real special when I was there.”

While Friday’s declaration is sure to have Chiefs Kingdom split on their approval of his message, Reid’s words should come as no surprise to fans who have followed his career arc in the long term. His time at Mizzou marked his fifth professional job coaching football, and his fourth as a collegiate offensive line coach.

Reid may not bleed black and gold like some in Columbia, but he’ll be sure to be tuned in to watch the game between the two bitter rivals on Saturday with a keen eye toward the upset.

According to ancient Colorado State lore, the Rams were once the proud holder of the Bronze Boot. While historians continue to argue the validity of that claim, current Buffalo Bills quarterback and former Wyoming standout Josh Allen chimed in with his thoughts on “Sheep Week”.

Colorado State is well aware of the history they will make if they are able to win the big game at War Memorial Stadium. Rams coach Mike Bobo reminded the team, the citizens of Fort Collins, and all of the communities along the Front Range of how the last three meetings against the Pokes have ended during practice this week.

All jokes aside, a very dangerous and hungry squad will be making their way up from Fort Collins for the game on Friday night. An explosive offense led by QB Patrick O’Brien and WR Warren Jackson combined with a must-win game from their perspective will ensure the Pokes get the best the Rams have to offer.

Three Keys to a Wyoming Win

Contain Warren Jackson

There is no way around it, this guy is a physical specimen. His “worst” game of the season was 4 rec-53 yards-1 TD against Arkansas. Pro Football Focus has Jackson ranked as the top G5 receiver. Wyoming’s defense gave up a lot through the air last week against Utah State so slowing the Rams passing game could be a challenge. Tyler Hall has been one of the better corners in the Mountain West but he will be at a huge size advantage against the Rams standout. Limiting Jackson’s production will be key in Wyoming keeping the Boot.

Reintroduce A Quarterback Running Threat

The Cowboys offense has looked really bad without a quarterback who can run the ball and Tyler Vander Waal had a tough game last week when he was asked to throw a lot more passes than the Pokes usually attempt. Last week, the Cowboys called some direct snaps to Valladay and attempted to get Austin Conway the ball on the perimeter. The reality is that Wyoming is going to struggle to expose the Rams defense if the plan is to run a knicked up Valladay up the gut for 25 attempts. Whether it’s calling more gimmick formations, more runs for Vander Waal, or inserting Levi Williams, the Cowboys need more out of that position than they have had the last 2 weeks.

Match Colorado State’s Intensity

The Rams have everything on the line in this one. At 4-6, they are still alive for a bowl bid if they can beat Wyoming and Boise State to close the season. While those odds are not great, with the way they have played during the second half of the season, they have shown that they haven’t given up. The seat is red hot for Mike Bobo and he may need wins against the Cowboys and Broncos to keep his job.

Wyoming also has a lot on the line. With a win, the Cowboys eliminate Colorado State, ensure their senior class never takes an L against the Rams, and earn the critical 7th win that should lock them into a bowl game.

Oh, and it’s for the Bronze Boot!
