Broncos injury report: Pat Surtain did not practice Wednesday

Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (knee) was among nine Denver players who did not practice Wednesday.

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (knee) did not practice Wednesday. Before practice, coach Vic Fanigo indicated that he is hopeful Surtain will be able to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Fangio also said left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) seems to have a less than 50% chance of playing in Week 10. Calvin Anderson filled in for Bolles against the Dallas Cowboys last week and played well.

Broncos injuries: Good news for Pat Surtain, bad news for Graham Glasgow

Broncos will be without guard Graham Glasgow (ankle) and right tackle Bobby Massie (ankle) for a bit.

Denver Broncos right guard Graham Glasgow suffered a fractured ankle during Sunday’s 30-16 win over the Dallas Cowboys, coach Vic Fangio confirmed Monday. The 29-year-old veteran will now go on injured reserve and he will have an uncertain status for the remainder of the 2021 season.

Quinn Meinerz stepped in for Glasgow on Sunday and the rookie played well. Netane Muti is also expected to return from the Reserve/COVID-19 list this week, so the Broncos have two capable potential replacements for Glasgow.

Meanwhile, right tackle Bobby Massie is set to miss a “game or two” after suffering an ankle injury, Fangio said. Calvin Anderson, the team’s backup swing tackle, started in the place of an injured left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) in Week 9. If Bolles is able to return this week, Anderson will presumably start in the place of Massie on the right side.

Fangio said cornerback Pat Surtain (knee) and defensive lineman McTelvin Agim (knee) are still undergoing testing, but KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis broke some news on Surtain before Monday’s press conference.

Surtain suffered a knee sprain, which is “very good news overall,” according to Klis. Surtain might be in danger of missing some time, but it sounds like his injury is not very serious, or at least not as serious as it could have been.

We’ll know more about the status of Denver’s injuries when the Broncos return to the practice field and release an injury report on Wednesday.

Twitter reacts to Bears RT Bobby Massie’s pending release

Twitter had plenty to say about the Bears parting ways with Bobby Massie, but there certainly wasn’t any surprise.

The Chicago Bears continue to trim their roster to free up salary cap space ahead of the new league year.

Bears right tackle Bobby Massie is the latest player to get the ax. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chicago is expected to decline the option on  Massie, which would make him a free agent and save them over $5 million in cap space.

The move didn’t really come as a surprise given Massie’s injury struggles coupled with his declining play over the last couple of seasons. Now, the Bears have a right tackle position to fill this offseason, which could likely be addressed through the NFL draft or with current players like Alex Bars or Germain Ifedi.

Naturally, Twitter had something to say about the Massie news, and there wasn’t a whole lot of surprise from Bears fans regarding Massie’s pending release.

Report: Bears will cut ties with RT Bobby Massie

The Bears are expected to decline the option on RT Bobby Massie, making him a free agent and saving them valuable cap space.

Another Chicago Bears player is set to be released as we inch closer to the start of the new league year.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bears are expected to decline the option on offensive tackle Bobby Massie, making him a free agent and saving them over $5 million in salary cap space.

Massie joins cornerback Buster Skrine as the other starting player to be released in an effort for the Bears to clear cap space.

The veteran right tackle joined the Bears as a free agent in 2016, signing a three-year contract after being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2012. As he steadily improved over the course of his contract, Massie signed an extension following the 2018 season, re-upping with the Bears for another four years, earning $14 million guaranteed.

Injuries would plague him over the last two seasons, however, as he missed 14 regular season games with ankle and knee issues. His last game as a Bear was in week eight against the New Orleans Saints.

The 31-year old offensive lineman now joins a crowded free agent pool and the Bears have an opening at their right tackle position heading into the start of the new league year.

7 predictions on the Chicago Bears and free agency

As the Bears head into free agency, we’re predicting expected cuts, re-signings and a predictable move with WR Allen Robinson.

We’re less than two weeks from the start of free agency, and the Chicago Bears have been pretty quiet ahead of the new league year. Chicago has 30 players that are free agents this offseason, and aside from re-signing some exclusive rights free agents, they haven’t made any other moves to bring back some key pieces.

With the salary cap set to challenge general manager Ryan Pace, there are certainly plenty of moves to expect to see over the next couple of weeks. Chicago already released cornerback Buster Skrine to save $2.7 million in cap space, and there should be plenty more cuts and even contract restructures along the way.

Here are seven predictions for the Bears heading into free agency, including expected cuts and re-signings, as well as a predictable move with receiver Allen Robinson.

5 Bears that could be on the chopping block this offseason

With a decreased salary cap, the Bears are in a rough spot. Here are players they could part ways with this offseason to free up cap space.

The Chicago Bears have plenty of needs to address this offseason. Although, outside of the 2021 NFL Draft, it’s going to be difficult given their limited salary cap space. With the salary cap expected to decrease by roughly $18 million, they’re currently around $2 million over the salary cap for 2021, according to Over The Cap.

There are players the Bears could part ways with this offseason to free up a good chunk of salary cap space, which would allow Pace to help navigate a very difficult salary cap situation ahead of free agency.

Here are five players that could be on the chopping block this offseason.

10 biggest salary cap hits for the Chicago Bears in 2021

Here’s a look at the 10 biggest cap hits for the Bears in 2021, which includes several offensive linemen and defensive players.

The Chicago Bears have an important offseason ahead where general manager Ryan Pace is going to have his hands full with what’s expected to be a decreased salary cap.

The salary cap is expected to decrease by nearly $22 million in 2021, which is due to the effects of COVID-19 during 2020. Currently where things stand — as OverTheCap projects — the Bears are $89,572 over the salary cap.

Which means Pace is going to have to make some changes in regards to cutting players and restructuring contracts, especially given the Bears have plenty of vacant positions to fill this offseason.

Chicago Bears sign OL Eric Kush to practice squad

The Bears added some much-needed depth at offensive line with the return of a familiar face in iOL Eric Kush to the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears added some much-needed depth at offensive line with the return of a familiar face.

The Bears have signed interior offensive lineman Eric Kush to the practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday. Kush previously played for Chicago back in 2016-18.

Kush has experience in Matt Nagy’s offense and can play either center or guard. Chicago has released Aaron Neary from the practice squad in conjunction with Kush’s addition.

The Bears have had major issues on the offensive line over the last few weeks, particularly when it comes to injuries. They lost left guard James Daniels a few weeks ago to a torn pectoral muscle, and right tackle Bobby Massie landed on injured reserve with a knee injury expected to sideline him at least a month.

But the Bears also dealt with a COVID-19 scare as center Cody Whitehair and reserve tackle Jason Spriggs both tested positive for the virus, which sidelined them last week. Back-up center Sam Mustipher also missed last Sunday’s game with a knee injury. Although Spriggs has since been activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Bears started Alex Bars at center and seventh-round rookie Arlington Hambright against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and they were encouraging in their first starts.

Still, Chicago’s struggles on the offensive line remain one of the biggest concerns on this team. It’s been evident in their run blocking — with the Bears the worst run game in the league — and in pass protection — with a statuesque Nick Foles.

The addition of Kush provides a little stability should Chicago’s offensive line struggles continue.

Bears activate RG Germain Ifedi from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Bears offensive line won’t be as decimated as previously thought as Germain Ifedi is cleared to play Sunday vs. Titans.

The Chicago Bears offensive line won’t be as decimated as previously thought. The team announced on Friday that guard Germain Ifedi has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Ifedi was placed on the list Tuesday following tackle Jason Spriggs’ positive test result. He was considered a close contact to Spriggs and needed to quarantine, despite testing negative for the virus. The veteran offensive lineman has started every game for the Bears this season at right guard after signing a one-year deal in the offseason.

With Ifedi returning to the team, the Bears will likely only be missing three of their five starters on the offensive line instead of four. Right tackle Bobby Massie was placed on injured reserve this week due to a knee injury and center Cody Whitehair will likely miss another game due to a calf injury and possibly COVID-19 as he reportedly tested positive on Thursday. Spriggs is also out due to his positive test.

The Bears travel to Nashville this weekend to take on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon.
