Rutgers coach Charlie Noonan visited Saint John Vianney High School to meet new head coach Bobby Acosta for recruiting opportunities.

On Tuesday, Rutgers football quality control coach Charlie Noonan visited Saint John Vianney High School (Holmdel, New Jersey) to meet new head coach Bobby Acosta for future recruiting opportunities.

Acosta was hired as Saint John Vianney’s head coach last week after spending last season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas Pine Bluff. The Queens, New York native has ties throughout New Jersey, coaching multiple schools within his coaching career.

Acosta coached IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, to a national championship in 2020 and was Marlboro High School’s (New Jersey) head coach in 2003 and Monmouth Regionalโ€™s (New Jersey) head coach in 2006.

While coaching at Monmouth High School, Acosta guided the Falcons to an 8-3 record, capturing their first playoff win and the Shore Conference Liberty Division championship.

Former Power Five assistant heading to New Jersey football parochial powerhouse

Bobby Acosta is taking over a New Jersey parochial program.

Bobby Acosta will take over a New Jersey parochial program that is loaded with the potential to become a national powerhouse.

On Monday, it was announced that Acosta will be the next head coach at St. John Vianney (Holmdel, New Jersey).

The well-traveled Acosta is best known for his two years as the wide receivers coach at Syracuse, ending in 2015. From there, he was an offensive coordinator at Cornell and Then Bucknell before taking over as head coach at IMG Academy in 2020.

Last year, he was the offensive coordinator at FCS program Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

He knows his new turf well. Born in New York City, Acosta played his college football at Rowan University (Glassboro, New Jersey). At his time at Rowan, the program was a Division III powerhouse that regularly made the NCAA Tournament.

At Syracuse, Acosta was known as a strong recruiter who made good local ties.

Last season, St. John Vianney went 3-7.

Located near the Jersey shore, St. John Vianney is well-located to draw talent from the central part of the state as well as the region along the shoreline. If Acosta can attract top talent, something that the former Power Five recruiter knows full well, there is the potential for St. John Vianney to turn things around and become a powerhouse program.

IMG Academy went 8-0 under Acosta’s watch in 2020, outscoring opponents 381-82 along the way. Its most impressive win over the season was a 41-14 romp over Duncanville in Texas in a battle of the then-top two teams in the country, according to the USA Today Super 25.

“I knew I found my new home after meeting with Athletic Director Tawni Angel and Superintendent Dr. Annette Tielle,” Acosta said in a statement. “Del Valle has a culture of excellence and wants to infuse our students with the tools to be successful.”

Acosta was the wide receivers coach Minnesota’s College of St. Scholastica in 2019 before becoming IMG Academy’s head coach. Prior to his one-year stint in Bradenton, Acosta accumulated coaching experience at the college level at Bucknell (2017-18), Cornell (2016) and Syracuse (2014-15).

Acosta takes over for Charles Burton at Del Valle. Burton, the father of five-star wide receiver and Ohio State commit Caleb Burton. The elder Burton was 29-51 at Del Valle and was the school’s longest-tenured head coach. Caleb Burton has elected not to play his senior season at Del Valle after his father stepped down.

Now, IMG Academy begins a search it has become all too familiar with in recent years. Whoever becomes the program’s next head coach is slated to inherit a loaded roster featuring numerous five and four-star recruits, headlined by five-star 2022 safety Keon Sabb and four-star 2022 quarterback A.J. Duffy.
