The Commanders hired ex-Warriors exec Bob Myers and fans were so confused about his role

Myers is a two-time NBA Executive of the Year.

During a very busy morning in the NFL, the Washington Commanders made a splashy hire to bring in former Warriors executive Bob Myers.

The longtime Golden State president of basketball operations and general manager was a four-time NBA champion and two-time NBA executive of the year while with the franchise.

Myers was hired by Josh Harris, who led an investment group to purchase the Commanders in 2023. Harris is also the managing partner of the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA and the New Jersey Devils in the NHL.

After parting ways with two-time AP NFL Coach of the Year recipient Ron Rivera on Monday morning, Harris and the Commanders are in the midst of a coaching search.

As part of his new duties with the Commanders, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Adam Schefter, Myers will “assist his ownership group” with searches for a new head of football operations and head coach.

“Myers, the architect of four championships with the Warriors and a current ESPN NBA analyst, and Spielman, a 30-year NFL front-office executive, will work with Harris and his limited partners Mitch Rates, Magic Johnson and David Blitzer as part of an advisory committee designed to reshape the Commanders’ front office and coaching staff, team officials told ESPN.

In a search that will commence immediately, Myers will take a lead role in identifying and coordinating interviews with candidates for the top football operations and head-coaching jobs, with Spielman set to work closely with him, officials said.”

Myers will reportedly continue his role as an NBA analyst for ESPN.

While he is potentially not a full-time hire, fans had mixed reactions (some positive and some confused) about Washington bringing him in to help usher in this new chapter of the franchise.

Commanders hire former Warriors and Vikings GMs as advisers for front office, head coaching search

The former successful GMs have been brought on as advisors to Josh Harris in the search for the next head of football operations and head coach.

The Washington Commanders fired head coach Ron Rivera on Monday morning. Shortly afterward, it was revealed the Commanders hired a pair of prominent executives to help managing partner Josh Harris and the ownership group find a new head of football operations and head coach.

Bob Myers, former Golden State Warriors general manager, and Rick Speilman, former Minnesota Vikings general manager, were brought on board to assist ownership.

Myers, 48, is a former NCAA champion basketball player at UCLA who is a two-time NBA Executive of the Year as GM of the Warriors. He served as Golden State’s GM from 2012-2023 before he stepped down in June. Myers also served as the Warriors’ president of basketball operations from 2016-23.

Spielman, 61, is a longtime NFL executive who began his scouting career in 1990 with the Detroit Lions. He spent seven seasons with the Lions in scouting roles before moving to the Chicago Bears for three years as the director of pro personnel. In 2000, the Miami Dolphins hired Spielman as the vice president of player personnel, and he was promoted to GM in 2004.

Spielman left the Dolphins in 2005, working for ESPN until the Minnesota Vikings hired him in 2006 as the vice president of player personnel. He would hold that role until 2011, when he was promoted to general manager. He served as Minnesota’s GM until 2021.

Harris released a statement via ESPN.

“This is a crucial offseason for us, and we won’t shy away from the work needed to get back to a place where we can deliver a winning culture top to bottom,” Harris said in the statement via ESPN. “…I’ve known Bob a long time and watched him construct four championship teams and a highly successful organization in Golden State…He is innovative, thoughtful, well-connected across sports and understands what it takes to solidify and sustain championship infrastructure. I think he’s going to be incredibly additive.”

Myers and Spielman will serve in advisory roles to Harris and are not full-time hires.

Per the ESPN story, current Washington general manager Martin Mayhew and Executive VP of Football/Player Personnel Marty Hurney will remain with the organization for the time being, allowing the next head of football operations to determine their futures.

Watch: Charles Barkley takes shot at Warriors during broadcast

Charles Barkley took a shot at the Golden State Warriors when on air with Bob Myers.

Bob Myers swapped the Golden State Warriors front office for a role as an analyst on national television. He’s been exceptional in his new role, bringing nuanced discussion and experience to the airwaves.

However, at times, discussions can take a turn. That’s precisely what happened during the Western Conference in-season tournament semifinal.

During a break, Myers was part of a panel that included Charles Barkley. The outspoken former All-Star joked with Myers that he had jumped off the Titanic before it sank. Barkley’s comments were in direct relation to the Warriors’ struggles over the opening months of the new NBA season.

Golden State is 11th in the West. It is one spot outside of the play-in tournament and faces a battle to secure a favorable playoff seed. However, the Warriors have been dealing with injury issues, and multiple members of the rotation have started the season slowly. There is still optimism Steve Kerr‘s team can figure it out.

Charles Barkley roasted former Warriors GM Bob Myers with a morbid Titanic joke

Charles Barkley is a menace.

Charles Barkley was completely unhinged during the NBA on TNT crossover with ESPN.

Barkley is part of what makes the NBA on TNT crew so special. With Ernie Johnson leading the way, Kenny Smith adding in his two cents and Shaquille O’Neal and Chuck constantly cracking jokes about one other, it’s comedic gold.

It only got better — and totally off the rails — when TNT and ESPN decided to do a crossover event for the NBA’s In-Season Tournament. Chuck immediately came in from the top rope with a suplex on Stephen A. Smith, and things were off and running from there.

Nobody was safe, including former Golden State Warriors general manager, Bob Myers, who dropped by.

The former Golden State Warriors GM was in the building for the 49ers’ primetime game against the Giants on Thursday Night Football.

The San Francisco 49ers home opener was a hot ticket in the Bay Area on Thursday night. Along with famous rapper Lil Durk, a former four-time champion with the Golden State Warriors was in the building for the 49ers’ Thursday Night Football tilt against the New York Giants.

Before the game kicked off in Santa Clara in primetime, former Warriors general manager Bob Myers was spotted on the field talking with Deebo Samuel and 49ers general manager John Lynch.

Bob Myers’ Warriors exit likely means owner Joe Lacob’s son will gain more team control

Kirk Lacob has worked for Golden State for more than a decade.

Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers is stepping down from his position, he told ESPN.

Myers, who was the president f basketball operations and general manager for Golden State, spent 12 years with the organization. He was highly influential in creating one of the most successful stretches of winning in recent NBA history.

Golden State will not have an easy time replacing Myers, who helped lead the team to win four titles over the course of the past eight seasons. But, per league insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the ownership group already has some succession plans prepared for the post-Myers era (via ESPN):

“With Myers’ departure, Warriors owner Joe Lacob is expected to seek more prominent roles for his son, Kirk, an executive VP of Basketball Operations, and VP of Basketball Operations Mike Dunleavy Jr.”

Joe Lacob became the majority owner of the Warriors in 2010. His son, Kirk, began working for the team not long after graduating from Stanford. Before his father ever had any affiliation with the Warriors, Kirk says he was offered an internship to work in the video room for the Phoenix Suns.

Kirk has over a decade of experience with the team, including experience as the general manager of their G League affiliate. He was promoted to become assistant general manager in 2012 and became the executive vice president of basketball operations in 2019.

Tim Kawakami shared more details about Kirk last year (via The Athletic):

“It’s always been generally assumed that Kirk is the heir apparent. He’s obsessive about basketball. He’s put in the work — he’s the one who was assigned to show why a G League affiliate would work for the Warriors, he arranged the purchase of the team, moved it to Santa Cruz and ran it for a few years, helping to make it a vital part of the Warriors’ holdings.”

According to Kawakami, Kirk is the “basketball ops staffer who argues with his father the most” when it comes to basketball decisions.

Last year, Kirk was named to The Athletic‘s NBA 40 under 40 series.

Earlier this year, The Athletic‘s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater reported that Kirk’s power with Golden State “stretches throughout the basketball and business operations” and that he profiles more as an “owner-in-waiting” than a general manager.

Kirk’s brother, Kent, is considered a ‘”rising voice” on the basketball side and works as the director of team development.
