New Titans QBs coach Bo Hardegree: 3 things to know

Three things to know about new Titans quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree.

The Tennessee Titans reportedly made yet another addition to their offensive staff on Thursday with the team hiring former Las Vegas Raiders coach Bo Hardegree as their new quarterbacks coach.

Hardegree comes over after two seasons in Vegas. He served as quarterbacks coach and was named interim offensive coordinator after Josh McDaniels was fired during the 2023 campaign.

The 39-year-old coach replaces Charles London, who did an excellent job with quarterback Will Levis.

Hardegree will have big shoes to fill in that regard and will have one of the more important jobs on the staff considering how important Levis is to the franchise’s future.

Here’s some more information on the Titans’ new quarterbacks coach.

Titans hiring ex-Raiders coach Bo Hardegree as QBs coach

The Titans are reportedly hiring former Raiders QBs coach Bo Hardegree to the same role.

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly set to make another addition to the offensive staff of head coach Brian Callahan.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Titans are hiring former Las Vegas Raiders quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree to the same role. Hardegree also served as the interim offensive coordinator after former Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels was fired.

From Week 9 on, the Raiders averaged 23 points per contest with Hardegree calling the plays.

However, context is needed there, as the Raiders dropped a whopping 63 points in one of those games. If you take that contest out, Las Vegas only averaged 17.9 points per contest in the other eight games.

That said, the Raiders did have a rookie quarterback at the helm in fifth-round pick Aidan O’Connell, who Hardegree obviously had a hand in developing.

O’Connell proved to be serviceable in his 11 games (10 starts), with the rookie tallying 2,218 passing yards, 12 touchdowns to seven picks and a completion percentage of 66.2.

The Raiders were 5-5 in O’Connell’s starts and he was turnover-free in six of the nine games he played with Hardegree as the interim offensive coordinator.

Prior to being hired by the Raiders in 2022, Hardegree served as an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots and New York Jets, and before that he was the Miami Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach.

Hardegree has a connection with Callahan, who was on the Denver Broncos’ staff with him. Hardegree was an offensive quality control coach for the Broncos in 2014 when Callahan was an offensive assistant.

In addition to the Callahan connection, Hardegree went to college at Tennessee, where he was a quarterback.

Ballers & Busters for Raiders Week 14 loss to Vikings

Ballers & Busters for Raiders Week 14 loss to Vikings

A barn burner it was not. This game made the wrong kind of history. It was the first game in Raiders history that was scoreless in the fourth quarter. In fact, the first score didn’t happen until 1:57 left in the game. That was a Vikings field goal and it proved to be the game winner.

Both teams had moved into scoring range earlier in the game, but the Vikings missed a field goal attempt and the Raiders fumbled it away inside the 20.

The result was a 0-0 tie for the first 58 minutes and a final of 3-0.

Raiders ride ‘electric’ vibe for decisive victory over Giants days after Josh McDaniels fired

Raiders ride ‘electric’ vibe for decisive victory over Giants days after Josh McDaniels fired

What a transformation. In Las Vegas Sunday we saw a team playing some of the most inspired football I’ve ever seen them play. They had broken free from the shackles of the previous head coach and were ready to show what they were capable of.

What they were capable of, apparently, was a completely dominating performance in every phase of the game. Starting with the defense, which now has a former NFL linebacker taking the headset.

It’s Antonio Pierce’s job now and the vibe he created with this team was palpable.

Pierce said he took his cue from the team’s emotional leader, Maxx Crosby, who then went out and responded to his new coach’s faith in him with a three-sack performance. Giving him 9.5 on the season; tied with TJ Watt for the second most in the league.

“It was a blast,” said Crosby. “We had a lot of fun out there, you could feel it. The energy was crazy. We sustained it for the whole game. That’s what we talk about. AP talked about it during the week, just playing with swag, letting everyone’s personality come to light and I feel like everyone felt that today.”

The Raiders would finish with eight sacks in the game, their most in a single game since the 2010 season. Six different players got to the quarterback including Adam Butler, Bilal Nichols, Tyree Wilson, Tre’von Moehrig, and Robert Spillane. A couple of those sacks were set up by Crosby’s pressure on the outside.

Crosby came into this game so confident they were going to win, he purchased cigars for the entire team the night before and then they all went out there and rolled over the Giants in every facet of the game to earn the right to smoke them after the game.

Then he posted a video of he and his teammates smoking them. Along with — at the end — Mark Davis making an appearance.

I asked Crosby about that level of confidence, to which he responded “No question. No question.”

“That’s the confidence that you have to have in this league,” Crosby continued. “You have to go out there with ill intent and the intention to go win. If you have any doubt that you’re going to go out there and succeed, you’re already a step behind. We had a lot of confidence, so we were ready to go and you just felt it in the building.”

This one was never close. The Raiders played on another plane. They stopped the Giants for a three-and-out, then went for an opening drive touchdown and never looked back.

From the first play, Josh Jacobs was running well and he and his offensive line looked more in tune with each other than they had all season. The result was a season high 98 yards for Jacobs and 125 yards rushing for the team. No small feat against a tough Giants defensive line.

“Our mentality.” said right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor of the difference with their performance in this game. “They have a great Dline and Dexter Lawrence is a freaking tank, so giving attention to him and also knowing that we’re capable of running the ball too and we have one of the best backs in the league, if not the best back. And once we get him going, it’s hard to stop. Get him going, control the line of scrimmage, and take it upon ourselves to control the game.”

By half time, Jacobs had already put up a season-high 85 yards rushing, and the Raiders led 24-0, giving them not only their highest scoring game of the season, but by far their most lopsided lead.

“I think it’s the best we’ve played as a team,” said Jacobs, seemingly stating the obvious.

“The vibe and the energy is just electric right now. This is the most connected that I feel we’ve been as a unit. Just to go out there and have fun and celebrate after doing things good and the defense stepping up and holding their own.”

Jacobs had two of the Raiders’ first three touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was set up by two incredible deep catches — one an interception by Amik Robertson at one goal line and the next one on the very next play with Aidan O’Connell connecting on a 50-yard bomb to Tre Tucker. That put the Raiders in first and goal and Jacobs punched it in two plays later.

It was the second deep interception by Amik Robertson.

“That’s who I am, man,” Robertson said of his interception. “Just doing my job, getting myself into the scheme. Once I saw the ball up there, I knew it was mine.”

Nate Hobbs added an interception as well off a deflection. That led to a field goal just before the half.

“All we did was replicate what we’ve been doing all week,” said Hobbs. “We had energy all week. We have love for each other, we got each other’s backs so we went out there and played as a team.”

If anyone would have been expected to throw an interception in this game it was O’Connell who had two on the season in limited snaps. But the rookie didn’t turn the ball over at all and ran the offense efficiently along with new offensive coordinator Bo Hardegree.

It was a great first game of this new page the Raiders have turned to. Pierce literally handed the players a blank page to symbolize the fresh start. It’s a fresh start for him to as the interim head coach. And the players responded to him and stepped up.

“We wanted to do it for AP,” said Josh Jacobs. “We all sat down and were like no matter how this goes, we’re going to play with all we’ve got for that man. Because the position that he’s in and he’s going to be the face of the ridicule. We wanted to go out and play for him and show that we can do that in all three phases and we went out there and did that today.”

That 30-6 runaway win Sunday told that story pretty succinctly.

Report: Patriots assistant coach to leave with Josh McDaniels for Raiders

New England lost an assistant coach to Las Vegas Wednesday.

The New England Patriots are losing an assistant coach, as Josh McDaniels looks to complete his coaching staff as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. according to NFL Network’ Ian Rapoport. Bo Hardgree will be the Raiders quarterbacks coach. He completed his first season with the Patriots in 2021.

He was an offensive assistant for New England. He has prior experience with the Miami Dolphins, serving as their quarterbacks coach from 2016-2018.

As the Patriots look to fill their offensive coordinator vacancy, there is no clear indication as to how the Patriots will replace McDaniels. One of the intriguing storylines for next season in particular is how this will affect the development of Mac Jones.

It’s also worth noting that the Patriots will take on the Las Vegas Raiders next season. And what should be a game filled with storylines, the Patriots may look a bit different on the offensive side of the football.

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels brings over Bo Hardegree from Patriots to be his QB coach

Josh McDaniels bringing over Bo Hardegree from Patriots as QB coach for Raiders

The second member of Josh McDaniels’s new staff has been filled. The Raiders have hired former Patriots offensive assistant Bo Hardegree as quarterbacks coach according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Hardegree spent just one season with the Patriots and apparently that was enough. Though he didn’t hold the title of QB coach, the former college quarterback worked primarily with the quarterbacks.

This will be the second time Hardegree has held the title of QB coach in the NFL. He was a QB coach for three seasons in Miami (2016-18) under Adam Gase. Those three years saw Ryan Tannehill’s number tank. Then after the Dolphins traded him, he was named Comeback Player of the Year.

Gase was hired as head coach of the Jets and Hardegree joined him as an offensive assistant. In 2021, after Gase was fired, Hardegree stayed on with the Jets and worked with rookie QB Zach Wilson. After that season, Hardegree took the same position with the Patriots, helping work with rookie QB Mac Jones.

But instead of completing the AFC East tour by heading to Buffalo, he switched to the AFC West, joining the Raiders. Or, should I say, switched *back* to the AFC West because he got his start in the NFL coaching ranks in Denver as an offensive quality control coach in 2014.

Report: Patriots to add former Jets assistant Bo Hardegree to coaching staff

The Patriots are expected to add Bo Hardegree to the coaching staff.

The New England Patriots are expected to add Bo Hardegree to their coaching staff, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Hardegree is expected to help replace the hole left by the departure of quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch. Hardegree recently served under Adam Gates as an offensive assistant with the New York Jets. He also worked with Gase as the Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach for three seasons. He has also spent time under David Cutcliffe as an assistant at Duke and Les Miles as an intern at LSU.

Hardegree does have some Patriots connections. Former Patriots linebacker and current inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo played football at Tennessee with Hardegree.

With the Patriots quarterback situation uncertain for the 2021 season, Hardegree could have his work cut out for him. This is just one of the many interesting storylines for the organization heading into next year.

Former Vols’ quarterbacks serving as Jets’ assistants now available

The Jets parted ways with head coach Adam Gase following the regular season finale.

New York (2-14) lost to New England, 28-14, to conclude the 2020 regular season.

The Jets parted ways with head coach Adam Gase following the regular season finale.

“This evening, I informed Adam Gase he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets,” Jets Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson said. “During his time here, I had the pleasure to get to know Adam and his wonderful family and wish them nothing but the best moving forward.  While my sincere intentions are to have stability in our organization – especially in our leadership positions – it is clear the best decision for the Jets is to move in a different direction. We knew there was a lot of work that needed to be done when Adam joined us in 2019. Our strong finish last year was encouraging, but unfortunately, we did not sustain that positive momentum or see the progress we all expected this season.

“To our fans, it is obvious we have not been good enough. We are committed to building a strong organization, on and off the field, and will continue to provide the necessary resources to field a team that you can be proud of.”

Former University of Tennessee quarterback Jim Bob Cooter served as the Jets’ running backs coach for Gase. After Cooter’s collegiate playing career came to an end in 2006, he served as a graduate assistant at Tennessee from 2007-08.

Another former Vols’ quarterback (2004-07), Bo Hardegree, also worked under Gase. Hardegree served as an offensive assistant with the Jets.

The pair of former Tennessee quarterbacks’ future with the Jets is uncertain if New York’s new head coach elects to hire their own staff.

Tennessee currently has two openings on its coaching staff with the offensive and defensive line units. Wide receivers coach Tee Martin and inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer have expiring contracts on Jan. 31.
