Cease grades higher than Gausman in several advanced pitching metrics such as hard-hit rate, exit velocity, expected ERA, whiff rate, spin and movement, per Statcast.

Three of Cease’s 5 pitches have a minus-run value (RV) and his slider is 1 of the most effective pitches in baseball while only 1 of Gausman’s 4 pitches has a minus-RV.

Also, Toronto’s bullpen ranks 26th in FIP (4.25) and 25th in home run per 9-inning rate (1.24), per FanGraphs, both worse than Chicago’s bullpen.

Finally, the White Sox hitters got off to a rough start this year but in June are 6th in both WAR (4.3) and wRC+ (127) and 7th in wOBA.

Toronto’s lineup is 7th in wRC+ (109), 5th in wOBA (.323) and 3rd in hard-hit rate (34.1%) against right-handed pitching, per FanGraphs. Chicago’s lineup has a 87 wRC+ (ranked 25th), .285 wOBA (28th) and a 25.9% hard-hit rate (dead-last).

Also, more than 70% of the money is on the Blue Jays while roughly 60% of the bets placed are on the White Sox at Tipico Sportsbook. Typically, it’s wiser to follow the cash column of the betting splits since professional bettors put up a lot more dough than your average Joe.

Ryu should bounce back from his worst outing of the season, but the hard-hit and fly-ball rates are still concerning.
