Where Texas ranks in Bleacher Report’s top 25 after Week 1

Bleacher Report moved Texas up in their top 25 rankings after a convincing win over Louisiana.

The Longhorns were not only able to avoid the upset by a ranked Louisiana team on Saturday, they blew them out winning by 20 points with a final score of 38-18.

Steve Sarkisian was making his debut as Texas’ head coach, and although people were well aware of the success he has had in being one of the best offensive minds in the game, there were still many doubters that believed the Longhorns would not be able to live up to the hype. At least not this quickly.

Texas proved the doubters wrong almost instantly, as the game seemed to be in total control by halftime. The offensive side of the ball was electric thanks to the play of redshirt freshman quarterback Hudson Card and do it all running back Bijan Robinson.

The defensive unit was very much improved from years prior and gave up less than 20 points, something defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski has notably made a goal of his this season. Texas was able to make Louisiana quarterback Levi Lewis uncomfortable, resulting in four sacks on the day. The Longhorns also only missed on eight tackles, which was the best mark in 2020.

Bleacher Report took notice and bumped the Longhorns up one spot in their top 25 rankings after Week 1. Contrary to the AP Poll, Bleacher Report viewed Texas the No. 17 team before the start of the season. The win over Louisiana saw the Longhorns move up one spot to No. 16 in the nation behind schools such as Iowa, Florida and Coastal Carolina. Sarkisian’s squad is listed ahead of UCLA, Virginia Tech, and Michigan.

It seems as if their rankings gave some disappointing teams the benefit of the doubt as the 7-15 range could really be interchanged, but it’s certainly a strong start to Texas’ season.

Where Texas ranks in Bleacher Report’s top 25 ahead of Week 1

Texas lands a little higher in Bleacher Report’s rankings ahead of Week 1.

College football already began for a handful of teams last week, but Texas’ season officially kicks off on Sept. 4 against Louisiana.

The Longhorns have had a big week to say the least. Steve Sarkisian named Hudson Card the starting quarterback to open the season, and Texas landed two four-star defensive lineman on the same day in Jaray Bledsoe and J’mond Tapp. Let’s just say the aura around the program is off the charts right now, exuberating confidence in the new staff to be successful.

Although Texas is starting the season ranked No. 21 in the AP Poll, the experts over at Bleacher Report felt more confident in the Longhorns when they released their top 25 ahead of Week 1. Whether or not they moved Texas up due to Card being the starter is not specified, but these rankings did come a day later, so perhaps some clarity at the quarterback position worked in Texas’ favor.

The Longhorns came in at No. 17, below schools such as Miami, Coastal Carolina, and Florida. They were listed ahead of programs like LSU, Indiana, Penn State, and Louisiana.

Texas has a great chance to soar up the rankings if they can string together some early wins against quality opponents. The Longhorns have everything working in their favor right now with a Sarkisian led offense where there is sure to be fireworks, and the defense could be one of the best units Texas has fielded in over decade with eight seniors and three juniors in their starting lineup.

This could very well be a huge season for a program who has been on the outside looking in for far too long.
