Former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Blake Proehl advanced to Hollywood on the season premiere of ABC’s American Idol.

Sometimes when one door closes, another door opens wide.

Former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Blake Proehl earned his way to Hollywood on the ABC reality show American Idol. Host Ryan Seacrest took the time to tweet it out during the season premiere on Sunday night.

Proehl signed with the Vikings out of East Carolina as an undrafted free agent but spent the majority of his time on either the practice squad or injured reserve. While rehabbing his injury, Proehl discovered his love of music and released his first single in 2022 titled “Falling Into You.”

Currently, Proehl is a free agent but could end up getting a futures contract and a shot to make a 53-man roster during training camp.

You can watch Proehl’s audition here.

Vikings sign 6 players to futures contracts

Futures contracts keep the player in the building to compete for a spot on the roster next year

When the season is over, teams take some time to sign their practice squad players to what is called a futures contract. That is essentially keeping them under contract for the offseason so they can help them develop and go through the offseason program and training camp.

Most players from a team’s practice squad will end up signing one of these at the end of the season, but some choose to wait it out and see what other opportunities exist elsewhere.

On Monday, the Minnesota Vikings inked six players to futures contracts with five of them coming from the practice squad and the other coming from injured reserve.

Vikings WR Blake Proehl name recipient of Ed Block Courage Award

The wide receiver has been with the Vikings since 2021

Each team names a recipient for the Ed Block Courage Award and the Minnesota Vikings have named theirs. On Tuesday, wide receiver Blake Proehl was named the Vikings recipient of the award.

The award is named after Block, who was a trainer for the Baltimore Colts and it is given to someone who exemplifies courage and sportsmanship.

An undrafted free agent out of East Carolina, Proehl is the son of longtime NFL wide receiver Ricky Proehl. He tore his ACL in August of 2021 and worked his way back to being healthy. On the way to being healthy, Proehl worked his way back with music and hard work.

Anthony Barr won the award in 2021 and Cam Smith did in 2020.

Vikings make 3 roster moves, could Odell Beckham Jr. be next?

Could the Vikings be opening up a roster spot for a major addition?

The Minnesota Vikings added Blake Proehl to the active roster on Monday after two weeks of his practice window had expired. On Tuesday, the Vikings did the same thing as they did with linebacker Ryan Connelly by waiving Proehl and making two other roster moves.

The Vikings also waived Dorn on Monday. The move was expected with the addition of Theo Jackson last week as the Vikings were likely not going to carry five safeties long-term. Adding Dorn back to the practice squad made sense as the Vikings do like him and what he brings to the table.

Brown was added to the practice squad when Dorn was signed to the active roster. His departure makes sense.

The Vikings currently sit at 52 rostered NFL players. What does that mean for the Vikings? Could this mean they are in the market for Odell Beckham Jr.? He hinted on Twitter on Tuesday that something might be imminent regarding his status.

The Vikings do have a significant LSU contingent with Justin Jefferson, Patrick Peterson and Ed Ingram. Pair that with the Vikings being 5-1 and they could become a real contender for his services at the right price.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell did work with him in Los Angeles last season after all.

Vikings activate WR Blake Proehl, release S Myles Dorn

The Vikings added the former East Carolina product to the active roster

The Minnesota Vikings were on a time crunch after activating the practice window for wide receiver Blake Proehl, who was on the PUP list. He has been practicing with the team over the last two weeks, which is the same amount of time that safety Myles Dorn has been on the active roster when he took rookie first-round pick Lewis Cine’s spot.

On Monday afternoon, the Vikings activated Proehl to the active roster and made room for him by waiving Dorn.

The Vikings were carrying five safeties when they signed Theo Jackson off of the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans last Tuesday.

The move signals that the Vikings have a very high opinion of the undrafted free agent in 2021 out of East Carolina. He is the son of former NFL wide receiver Ricky Proehl.

Dorn is likely to end up back on the practice squad if he clears waivers, as the Vikings seem to value him highly.

Vikings officially sign Khyiris Tonga among four roster moves

The Vikings make four roster moves, including making the signing of Khyiris Tonga official

After news broke that the Vikings were going to sign former Chicago Bears seventh-round pick nose tackle Khyiris Tonga off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad, the Vikings made it official on Wednesday morning.

Along with the signing of Tonga, they officially made three other roster moves as well, including waiving linebacker Ryan Connelly who the Vikings just activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list on Tuesday.

Ryan Connelly was activated yesterday by the Vikings and they officially moved on from the fourth-year linebacker from Wisconsin.

Blake Proehl having his practice window activated gives the Vikings 21 days to make a decision on if they want to keep him on the roster. With Travis Toivonen being released from the practice squad, that is the likely spot for Proehl. However, the Vikings only have five wide receivers on the active roster so they could keep Proehl.

The Vikings bring back Mike Brown whom they signed as an undrafted free agent from Miami OH. They moved on from Brown during roster reductions this August and decided to bring him back with the injury to Lewis Cine.

Vikings have second-lowest money on injured reserve

The Vikings have had great injury luck thus far

One of the toughest parts of running a team in the National Football League is dealing with injuries, especially to key players on the team. During training camp, we saw a litany of major injuries to key players. The Vikings have seen that happen including last season with Irv Smith Jr.

The tough part about injuries is that you have little to no control over who these injuries occur and when they happen. Luckily for the Vikings, they have had quite a bit of luck in that department.

Per Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap, the Vikings have the second-lowest amount of salary on injured reserve, NFI and PUP.

With just over 3.77 million committed on those lists, the Vikings have just five players all at or near the minimum. Thomas Heningan, Olabisi Johnson and Kenny Willekes are all out for the season on injured reserve and Blake Proehl and Ryan Connelly are on the PUP list.

The hope is that the Vikings don’t have to add any more names to injured reserve moving forward.
