B/R lands Bills outside top-10 in power rankings

Buffalo Bills in Bleacher Report’s latest power rankings

The Bills have cracked the top-five or settled near it in many national power rankings. Bleacher Report gives the Bills some respect in their post-draft list, but Buffalo doesn’t land at the best of spots.

B/R ranks the Bills No. 11 on their latest power rankings. Quarterback Josh Allen will have to prove them otherwise as the outlet says the “big question” is Allen.

Here’s more of their breakdown on the Bills:

We don’t want to alarm you, but something unsettling is happening to the football landscape in 2020. It’s frightening, even.

The Buffalo Bills are the consensus favorites to win the AFC East. It’s been a while since we could write that with a straight face. But here we are.

The Bills were a playoff team in 2019, and they did a solid job acquiring more talent in the offseason. The additions of veteran Mario Addison and rookie A.J. Epenesa should add juice to the front seven. Josh Norman was a great low-risk flier in the secondary. And the trade that brought Stefon Diggs to Western New York gives Josh Allen the No. 1 receiver he lacked a season ago.

Overall, Buffalo’s roster looks set. There’s no glaring needs or holes, but the Bills certainly put Allen in a strong position to succeed. Now he has to do just that. Stefon Diggs and Co. helps, but Allen’s the man pulling the trigger. If his arm catches up to his legs as a mobile QB, the NFL should be scared.

While the Bills are outside the top-10, they’re still the top-dog in the AFC East via B/R’s rankings, and by a lot. The Patriots slip down to No. 20, just edging out the Dolphins and Jets at No. 22 and 24, respectively. The top-three in the NFL are the Chiefs, Ravens and 49ers in third.

Bills among league-leaders in Sporting News power rankings

Buffalo Bills in Sporting News post-NFL Draft power rankings.

Bad news: Quarterback Tom Brady is still ahead of the Bills in Sporting News‘ latest power rankings following the 2020 NFL Draft.

But who cares? He’s not Buffalo’s problem anymore, so let’s be thankful for the top-five finish the Bills earned in this list.

Sporting News ranked the Bills as their No. 5 team in their recently released power rankings:

5. Buffalo Bills

The Bills’ offensive improvements around Josh Allen had a strong second phase with Stefon Diggs and Zack Moss in the mix to fit in with all their successful skill and line changes from a year ago. The defense lost Jordan Phillips, Shaq Lawson and Lorenzo Alexander but added A.J. Klein, A.J. Epenesa and Quinton Jefferson. Buffalo should rule the AFC East with the Patriots finally moving on from Brady and also be a bigger factor in the playoffs.

The Bills are certainly the AFC East favorites currently. But the conference overall? That’s some big praise for Buffalo if they reach such levels. The Bills’ division is much easier for them to navigate, on paper, at least. The AFC overall does still hold the defending champion Chiefs and reigning MVP in Lamar Jackson. Tough playoff tests could be ahead, and it’ll be fun to see what happens.

Overall on the power rankings, the Chiefs edge out the Ravens for the top spot, followed by the 49ers and Bucs right ahead of the Bills. The rest of the AFC East lands pretty far back. The Patriots are at No. 19, with the Jets and Dolphins at No. 26 and 30, respectively.

USA Today drops Bills in final power rankings

Buffalo Bills in USA Today’s end of season power rankings.

The Bills have taken worse heartbreak in recent memory than USA Today’s power rankings, but the outlet did drop Buffalo one spot in their final power rankings after Super Bowl LIV.

The Bills slotted in at No. 12 overall, falling from 11. Here’s why:

12. Bills (11): Team apparently poised for breakthrough in division long ruled by New England might now need to convince other vets to come to Buffalo and buy in.

Like many final power rankings, the Patriots are in mind for the Bills and Buffalo is right on their heels. The Pats rank as USA Today’s best team in the AFC East, but they’re only at No. 11.

The Bills do have their various needs to address this offseason, but so do the Patriots. Heck, no one really knows what’s going on with quarterback Tom Brady, either. If the Patriots lose him, could they be in-line for a rebuild of sorts? Their defense is strong, but their offense is not.

Continuing in the AFC East, the Dolphins bring up the rear at No. 27 while the Jets sit at No. 19. In perhaps the biggest surprise on the list, the Titans ranked as the No. 3 overall team in USA Today’s power rankings, behind the Chiefs and 49ers, respectively.

Power rankings: TD Wire pegs Bills inside top-10

Buffalo Bills in Touchdown Wire’s end of season power rankings.

The Buffalo Bills ranked as the No. 8 team in the NFL in Touchdown Wire‘s end of season power rankings.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

In their explanation, the outlet said the Bills could be the favorite in the AFC East come next season. But of course, there’s something out of the Bills’ hand mentioned:

Despite a loss to Houston in the wild-card round, the 2019 season was an overall success for Buffalo. The Bills hung close to the Patriots in the AFC East, and they did it with young players such as quarterback Josh Allen and running back Devin Singletary playing key roles. General manager Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott have carved a bright future in Buffalo. It could get even brighter in a hurry. If Tom Brady leaves New England (and there has been plenty of speculation about that), the Patriots suddenly are no longer the favorite to win the AFC East. The Bills are.

The Bills? The favorite? It’s a worthwhile argument to make even if Tom Brady doesn’t leave the Patriots. New England, who only rank one spot ahead of the Bills in this set of power rankings, have plenty of issues to address themselves this offseason.

Naturally the Chiefs edged out the 49ers in TD Wire’s power rankings for the top spot, but the Ravens slot in at the No. 3 spot. While thinking very highly of the Bills, Touchdown Wire wasn’t as nice to the Dolphins and Jets in this one. Those two AFC East rivals of the Bills, respectively, slot in at 26 and 22, respectively.

Power rankings: Bills end 2019 in NFL.com top-10

Buffalo Bills in NFL.com’s end of season power rankings.

With the 2019 season in the past and the 2020 schedule a long, long ways away, NFL.com dusted off their final power rankings of the season.

In it, the Bills rounded out the top-10.

Here’s the breakdown for the Bills’ placement:

Josh Allen came apart in the Bills’ crushing playoff loss to the Texans, but that shouldn’t obscure what was a promising Year 2 for the former first-round pick. He improved on nearly all facets of his game, and the Bills are right to remain completely committed to Allen in the pivotal Year 3. With a loaded defense, a promising young running back in Devin Singletary and a rising offensive line, it makes sense for the Bills to add more weapons around their young quarterback this spring. Wide receiver John Brown was an excellent acquisition by GM Brandon Beane last year. The signing of Cole Beasley, the slot man and Allen security blanket, also worked out. Now Beane must complete his wideout rebuild with an upgrade who will line up across from Brown.

The Chiefs and 49ers took the top-two spots in NFL.com’s rankings, respectively, with the Saints locked in at three. In an interesting indication, the Bills and Patriots aren’t far off. The Pats slotted in at No. 8, two spots ahead of Buffalo. The Texans, who ended the Bills’ season in the wild-card round, finsih at nine.

Rounding out the AFC East, the Jets clocked in at No. 21, with the Dolphins actually pretty far from the basement of the NFL at No. 24.

ESPN’s early offseason power rankings are favorable to Bills

ESPN’s way-too-early 2020 offseason power rankings and the Buffalo Bills.

The parade in Kansas City for the Chiefs hasn’t even happened yet, but ESPN still took a swing on their power rankings already.

One day after the Chiefs defeated the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, the worldwide leader released their “way too early” power rankings for the upcoming 2020 NFL season. The Bills landed in a solid spot, at No. 11 overall.

Here’s how ESPN breaks down the Bills’ placement and the team’s “reason for optimism” heading into next year:

2019 record: 10-6

Reason for optimism: An estimated $90 million in cap space, nine draft picks and a young core — pick one. The Bills made the playoffs at 10-6 in 2019 and still have a bevy of resources at their disposal to help them take that next step. Given what GM Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott have been able to do over the past few offseasons with limited resources, there is a lot of reason for optimism in 2020.

The Bills certainly do have plenty of resources to improve upon their already number of successes under McDermott and Beane. However, the “reason for optimism” also comes down to two other factors.

In regard to resources to add more, the Bills do also have to consider using some of that, namely their salary cap space, to keep some of their own. The three on top of that list would be Tre’Davious White, Dion Dawkins and Matt Milano. All three are entering the final years of their rookie contracts in 2020 and the Bills would be smart to pay all three.

Second, it’s the NFL in 2020. The Bills can have tons of money and draft picks to throw around, but what always matters in the NFL is how you literally do throw the ball. Josh Allen’s future can sway this optimism one way or another with his play.

Power rankings: Bills finish season inside most top-10s

Buffalo Bills in national power rankings polls following the 2019 regular season.

With the playoffs looming the Bills still have a chance to change the narrative that they haven’t beaten a quality opponent this season. Everyone has some talent on their roster if they’ve made the playoffs, the Houston Texans included.

But before the Bills get their opportunity to do so, the end of season power rankings were released this week across various national outlets. Those media polls saw the Bills finish mostly in the top-10.

Here’s a rundown of the Bills’ placement in some national power ranking polls following the regular season:

Touchdown Wire

8. Buffalo Bills

(10-6. Last week: 8)

The Bills lost to the Jets in a game that had no playoff implications. That’s why coach Sean McDermott barely played quarterback Josh Allen and many of his starters. The Bills will face Houston in the first round of the playoffs. Anything the Bills do in this year’s postseason is gravy. It’s more about the future. With Tom Brady getting older, New England can’t own the AFC East forever. The Dolphins and Jets have some rebuilding to do. The Bills already are good and could overtake the Patriots next year.

USA Today

11. Buffalo Bills (-2)

As Josh Allen readies for playoff debut, he’ll surely face questions as to whether he can keep pace against counterparts like Deshaun Watson.

NFL.com

10. Bills (10-6)

Previous rank: No. 10

The Bills went into Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Jets with nothing to play for but a shiny 11-5 finish. They didn’t get it, and they ended up losing some key players to injury despite resting multiple starters. Starting cornerback Levi Wallace was ruled out after suffering a nasty-looking ankle injury on an interception of Sam Darnold. Offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe aggravated an ankle injury in his first action since Week 11. Josh Allen was lifted after just two series, and Matt Barkley reminded us that, well, the Bills need Josh Allen to stay healthy. The standout on offense was reserve wideout Duke Williams, who had six catches for 108 yards on a team-high 12 targets. A nice showcase for Williams, but he’ll likely return to the sidelines when the Bills starters emerge from hibernation Saturday in Houston.

One could make the argument for Terry and Kim Pegula’s purchase of the team, but the end of a 17-season playoff drought brought hope to a fan base and raised the standards for the franchise. Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane’s early success earned them the benefit of the doubt during a six-win season in 2018 and set the foundation for their second playoff appearance in three years in 2019. Buffalo earned that wild-card berth in 2017 thanks to a last-minute touchdown pass from Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton to Tyler Boyd to beat the Ravens; both players are still revered in Buffalo.

Week 17 Result: Lost vs. New York 13-6

Let’s get this out of the way: Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets didn’t matter even a little. The Bills were already locked into the AFC’s No. 5 seed and had nothing to play for. Buffalo will still head to Houston next week to face the Texans.

Therein lies the rub for a Bills team that won 10 games and made the postseason for the second time in three years. You see, the Bills haven’t really beaten anyone this year.

They played five games this season against teams that will play on next week, including two in the division against the rival New England Patriots. Buffalo was 1-4 in those games, with the only victory a 14-7 win over the sixth-seeded Tennessee Titans in early October.

“In theory, the Bills have what it takes to succeed in the playoffs. They can run the ball, play defense and dictate tempo,” Davenport said. “But at some point in the postseason, it comes down to quarterbacks making plays. And while Josh Allen has made strides in his second season, there isn’t a signal-caller in the AFC bracket in whom I have less confidence.”

Sporting News

8. Buffalo Bills, 10-6 (8)

The Bills have played a physical style with timely big plays, and Sean McDermott needs to be a strong coach of the year candidate. They really needed to rest those indispensable bodies against the Jets, and they will go into the wild-card game in Houston with full, relentless force.

Power rankings: Bills win over Steelers impresses

Buffalo Bills in power rankings polls following Week 15, heading into Week 16.

The Bills are back in the good graces of the national power ranking polls following their Week 15 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Buffalo’s 17-10 victory gave the Bills a playoff berth, but in the process, more recognition as well since the game was on Sunday Night Football.

Here’s how the Bills fared in national power rankings polls following their win over the Steelers, heading into Week 16:

7. Buffalo Bills (10-4. Last week: 9)

Buffalo’s 17-10 win against Pittsburgh on Sunday was historic on multiple levels. The Bills clinched their first 10-win season of this century and their second playoff berth of the century. They also defeated the Steelers for the first time since 1999. Since they play in a small market, the Bills often fly under the radar of national media. No more. Head coach Sean McDermott should be Coach of the Year, general manager Brandon Beane should be Executive of the Year, and Josh Allen is the most underrated quarterback in the league. The Bills grind it out on the ground while taking some shots downfield and playing solid defense. This is a team that can do some damage in the postseason. But the postseason isn’t here yet. Buffalo has another huge game Saturday at New England.

For the second time in 21 years, the Buffalo Bills are headed to the playoffs. Oh, hell, let’s spin positive. For the second time in three years, the Buffalo Bills are headed to the playoffs. They got there in style, intercepting four Duck Hodges passes in a 17-10 win over the Steelers at Heinz Field in front of Al, Cris, Michele and the world. Tiebreaker scenarios make an AFC East title unlikely, even in the event of a win over the Patriots in Foxborough next week, but who cares? The Bills have punched their ticket … and do you really want to face this defense on a cold day in January? So much of the credit for this Buffalo turnaround belongs to Sean McDermott, who managed to import to Western New York the dominant style of defense he built in Carolina. This team is hungry, and it believes.

Not a pretty win for Buffalo, but one that confirmed their defense is to be taken very, very seriously come January. Yes, the Steelers offense is useless, but five takeaways helped cover the warts on Buffalo’s similarly shoddy O. Still, Josh Allen only turned it over once and engineered this drive to put the Bills ahead for good and set up a surprisingly pivotal Week 16 AFC East showdown with the Patriots.

Offseason in two words: More playmakers

Buffalo reached the double-digit win plateau in 2019 largely on the strength of an elite defense that often carried a sputtering offense. The goal this offseason must be to continue to surround Josh Allen with a full arsenal of offensive weapons — and build an offense that can provide this defense more of a lead to play with. The Bills have a full complement of draft picks and an estimated $90 million in salary-cap space; even after they take care of in-house players such as Tre’Davious White, Matt Milano, Dion Dawkins and Jordan Poyer, they’ll still have plenty of resources at their disposal.

Week 15 Result: Won at Pittsburgh 17-10

On Sunday night in the Steel City, the Buffalo Bills did something they haven’t done in two decades—won their 10th game of the season. In doing so, Buffalo locked down its second trip to the postseason in three years.

The Bills did more than that. For the second time this season, the Bills went on the road and beat a team that presently sports a winning record—a talent that will no doubt serve the team well if it makes the postseason as a wild card.

Now, the Bills have an opportunity to do much more than that. To do something that would have sounded impossible not that long ago—take the AFC East.

It’s not an especially likely scenario—the Bills need a win at Gillette Stadium next week and for the Patriots to lose to the Miami Dolphins in the season finale. The latter is a lot less likely than the former.

But the fact that the Bills going to Foxborough and beating their AFC East rivals isn’t considered laughable is a sign of just how far Buffalo has come.

The Bills are legit.

The Bills had a strong showing in Week 14, even in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Heading into Week 15, national media outlets reflected the Bills’ strong showing in their weekly power rankings. It doesn’t appear the loss hurt the Bills all that much.

7. Buffalo Bills

(9-4. Last week: 7)

When the Eagles shut down Michael Vick in the 2004 NFC Championship game, defensive coordinator Jim Johnson did it with a mush-rush as opposing to crashing his ends down on the hypermobile quarterback, and asking his linebackers and safeties to spy gaps in the defense as opposed to spying Vick himself. Current Bills head coach Sean McDermott was Johnson’s assistant secondary coach at the time, and there were elements of the Vick plan in Buffalo’s attempts to at least slow Lamar Jackson down on Sunday. It didn’t work on the scoreboard — the Ravens won their ninth game in a row with a 24-17 final — but Jackson was limited to a point. He did throw three touchdown passes, but managed just 145 passing yards on 16 completions in 25 attempts, and had just 40 rushing yards on 11 attempts. McDermott’s team doesn’t have much time to brood over this missed opportunity. They have the Steelers and Patriots on the docket next — and that’s bad news for quarterback Josh Allen, who looked anything but consistent against Baltimore’s defense.

11. Bills (9-4)

It was another near miss against a conference powerhouse, but moral victories only go so far at this time of year. Credit the Bills’ defense for an inspired effort, limiting Lamar Jackson to just 145 yards passing and less than 4 yards per rush (Jackson entered the game averaging over 7.0 yards per carry in his likely MVP season). The problem for Buffalo was the offense. The Bills’ attack entered Sunday averaging more than 400 yards per game over the previous three weeks. But moving the ball was a chore against a strong Ravens defense: Josh Allen fumbled twice (losing one) and had just 89 yards passing with 10 minutes to play. Even Buffalo’s march into the red zone in the final minutes was entirely aided by 56 yards of Ravens penalties. The defense did its part on Sunday — Allen and the offense took a step back.

More proof the Bills aren’t messing around this season, but the offense couldn’t get out of its own way long enough to mount an effective comeback. Shaky outing from Josh Allen (17-of-39, 146 yards, TD, 62.6 rating) against a defense that put him on the ground six times and recovered one of his two fumbles, but none of his receivers got open often enough to generate more than 37 individual yards.

Week 14 ranking: 10

Offense: 22nd

On several occasions this season, the Bills’ defense held down the fort while Buffalo’s offense found its rhythm. Thanks to an improved pass rush and one of the NFL’s top secondaries, Buffalo is difficult to throw the ball against, allowing just 195 passing yards per game. The latest feather in its cap came this past week, when it held the Ravens’ league-best offense to just 225 yards in a 24-17 loss. Without its defense playing at an elite level, Buffalo would not be 9-4 with a shot at an AFC East title, given its struggles on offense and special teams.

There’s no shame in losing to the Baltimore Ravens. Over the past two-plus months, that’s all teams have done when facing the Ravens.

But the Bills had a chance to silence some doubters Sunday—and they failed. In fact, they may have amplified the doubts that swirled around the team.

There were doubts as to whether Josh Allen could step up his game against a quality opponent. Against the Ravens, he did the opposite—managing just 17 completions on 39 attempts for 146 yards.

There were doubts as to whether the Bills could beat one of the league’s best teams. The Bills have now played only three teams that presently sport winning records—games in which Buffalo sits at 1-2.

The Bills are a good team. Barring a collapse in Week 17 against the New York Jets, Buffalo will win at least 10 games and probably make the playoffs. But Buffalo plays winning teams in each of the next two weeks in the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots.

If the team can’t at least get a split there, it will be awfully hard to see the Bills as more than a one-and-done team in the postseason.

Power rankings: Bills inch closer to top-5

Buffalo Bills power rankings in NFL heading into Week 14.

The Bills earned a win in front of everyone, a nationally televised ‘W’ over the Dallas Cowboys, in Week 13.

Heading into Week 14 and a meeting with the Baltimore Ravens, the Bills are on the doorstep of top-five status across national power rankings polls.

With that, here’s how the Bills fared in various power ranking polls across national meeting outlets this week:

Could they actually win AFC East for first time since 1995? Buffalo must go through Ravens and Steelers before next shot at Patriots.

Touchdown Wire

7. Buffalo Bills

(9-3. Last week: 9)

It is now officially time to stop ignoring the Bills as the products of an easy schedule — when you have a 9-3 record, you have done enough right to be taken seriously. Yes, Buffalo had by far the NFL’s worst slate of opponents coming into their Thanksgiving matchup in Dallas, but going out of Big D with a 26-15 win that was far more dominant than the score might indicate? That was the very definition of a statement win.

Josh Allen completed 79% of his passes for 231 yards and a touchdown. John Brown, perhaps the NFL’s most underrated receiver, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to running back Devin Singletary. Allen added 43 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. And a defense that has flown under the radar most of the season sacked Dak Prescott four times, limited him to two touchdown passes on 49 attempts, and racked up nine passes defended and three forced fumbles.

Now, it comes time for Buffalo to prove it on a different level — with games against the Ravens, Steelers, Patriots and Jets in the next four weeks, Sean McDermott’s team faces the toughest remaining slate. That’s skewed to a large degree by the Ravens and Patriots, but the point still stands. There’s a lot more to prove here, but this is a team capable of proving it.

We see you, Bills. We all see you now. Sean McDermott’s squad went to Dallas and laid a Thanksgiving whooping on the supposedly superior Cowboys, putting themselves on the map as a legitimate contender in the AFC. At 9-3, the Bills have a stranglehold on a wild-card spot and remain within striking distance of the hardly invincible Patriots in the AFC East. There were standout performances up and down the roster against the Cowboys, but this game could be a flashpoint for Josh Allen, who played like a franchise quarterback in front of a huge national audience. Allen led six consecutive scoring drives against Dallas and dished out some punishment on a third-quarter touchdown run that might be the highlight of his young career to date. Now the Bills get extra time to prepare for their biggest challenge of the season: a home game against the surging Ravens. Dismiss the Bills at your own risk.

There you go, Bills! That’s a Thanksgiving day win with some substance behind it, as the Buffalo D kept Dak and a potent Cowboys attack off the scoreboard from the 10:39 mark of the first quarter until 4:06 in the fourth. Josh Allen has played quite well since the Week 4 stinker, going 19-of-24 for 231 yards a TD and a 120.7 rating to boot on Sunday while the Cole Beasley revenge game took effect to the tune of six catches, 110 yards and a touchdown.

Josh Allen looked really good carving up the Cowboys. In eight games since a disastrous start against New England, Allen has 1,688 yards, 13 touchdowns, two interceptions and a 98.7 passer rating. And he’s dangerous with his legs. I’m not sure the Texans or Chiefs want to see the Bills on wild-card weekend.

Yes, No. 9 may be too low; beat the Ravens and Buffalo will crash the top five.

10. Buffalo Bills (9-3)

High: 10
Low: 10
Last Week: 11
Week 13 Result: Won at Dallas 26-15

For most of this season, many folks have been sleeping on the Bills. Despite the third-best record in the AFC, there wasn’t much talk of the Bills as a legitimate force in the conference.

That may be about to change after the Bills hammered the Cowboys in Dallas on Thanksgiving—in front of the largest television audience for any program since Super Bowl LIII.

After putting on a showcase in his first nationally televised appearance, Bills quarterback Josh Allen downplayed the significance of the win while speaking with reporters.

“Just No. 9,” Allen told reporters, referring to the Bills’ win total this season.

However, Davenport thinks this was more than just another win.

“The thoroughness and ease with which Buffalo dismantled the Cowboys was an eye-opener,” he said. “The Bills are stout defensively and can run the ball, and Allen is playing light-years better than his rookie season. I don’t know that the Bills will beat Baltimore next week. Or that they can go into Foxborough and slay their archenemies. But assuming that the Bills wind up the AFC’s No. 5 seed, there isn’t a team in the conference that wants any part of being No. 4.”

Gagnon, on the other hand, is still a tad skeptical…but coming around.

“I’m not ready to declare the Bills a contender because Dallas was overrated to begin with,” he said. “Still, it’s a heck of a good sign that the stout defense is now starting to make splash plays, and the sky is the limit for Josh Allen. It’s important to keep in mind that the offense underwent major changes in the offseason. Are they finally starting to click?”

10. Buffalo Bills, 9-3 (10)

The Bills got their signature win with their dominance of the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Josh Allen keeps improving with his revamped weapons, and the defense is making it difficult on opponents with its toughness and aggressiveness. They get their shot to take it up a few notches in the AFC against the Ravens in Week 14.
