Jaguars hire ex-LSU DC Matt House as linebackers coach

The Jaguars are reportedly hiring former LSU defensive coordinator Matt House to coach their linebackers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are hiring Matt House to their new linebackers coach, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

House most recently spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the LSU Tigers before he was fired earlier this month. After the LSU defense ranked 41st in the country during the 2022 season, allowing an average of 354.6 yards per game, it plummeted to 108th in 2023 with the average yardage climbing to 416.6.

Prior to his time at LSU, House made a few coaching stops in the NFL. Early in his career, he spent one season as an assistant special teams coach with the Carolina Panthers and three as a defensive quality control coach with the St. Louis Rams.

House’s last NFL stop was a three-year stint as linebackers coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. He also worked for three years as a linebackers coach at Kentucky while Jaguars pass rusher Josh Allen was at the school.

While Jaguars coach Doug Pederson elected to fire most of the defensive coaching staff, outside linebackers coach Bill Shuey was among those who were retained.

That could mean that House is tasked with working with the team’s inside linebackers. That group currently consists of Foye Oluokun, 2022 draft picks Devin Lloyd and Chad Muma, and 2023 pick Ventrell Miller.

Jaguars excited for K’Lavon Chaisson after rough 2022 season

Jaguars OLB coach Bill Shuey says K’Lavon Chaisson has put the time in following his injury-riddled 2022.

Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson missed much of the 2022 season due to injury. He suffered a meniscus injury Oct. 9 and was sent to the injured reserve list Oct. 10.

Chaisson returned to the field Dec. 11 against the Tennessee Titans and closed the season with 10 total tackles and one sack.

Jaguars outside linebackers coach Bill Shuey is excited to see what Chaisson can produce following his injury-riddled season last year.

“When he is healthy, I see some good things,” Shuey said. “He’s one of the hardest-working guys out there.”

Chaisson is smart and proficient with his body movements, Shuey said. The coach stressed the importance of putting in the time and focusing on the right things in practice. He said a player can devote 10,000 hours to the game, but they’ll only see the results they want if they’re practicing the right things.

“So K’Lavon has put that time in, and it’s been quality time, and you see it in his movement,” Shuey said. “Now it’s a matter of bringing it all together and make sure that he’s healthy, so he’s peaking at the right time.”

Shuey hopes Chaisson’s improvements will help his teammates improve as well, he said.

“We talked about iron sharpens iron,” Shuey said. “My hope is that he can push other guys to earn the playing time.”

Report: Jags finalize contract to add Bill Shuey as a LB coach

While the Jags have yet to officially announce their coaching staff, it appears Doug Pederson has locked in an outside LB coach.

Doug Pederson has relied on a lot of his old connections with the Philadelphia Eagles to help add to his staff, and on Wednesday, he seems to have added another assistant from the tree. According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the team signed former Chicago Bears assistant Bill Shuey to be their outside linebackers coach.

Shuey, who was previously the Bears’ outside linebackers coach, crossed paths with both Pederson and Jags defensive coordinator when all three were assistants under Andy Reid in Philadelphia. Shuey had been with the Eagles, organization since 2000, and eventually, Caldwell joined the staff in 2008 while Pederson did in 2009. Eventually, Caldwell became an assistant linebackers coach under Shuey in 2010 after previously being their defensive quality controls coach the two years prior.

Shuey will join the Jags after spending the last four seasons with the Bears where he started as a defensive quality controls coach in 2018. He spent the next two seasons as a pass-rush analyst and assistant linebackers coach, then his final season was as the Bears’ outside linebackers coach.

While with the Bears, he got the opportunity to coach notables like Leonard Floyd, Khalil Mack, and Robert Quinn. Now, he will get to work with notables Josh Allen and K’Lavon Chaisson, and maybe even Kayvon Thibodeaux or Aidan Hutchinson if the Jags choose to select either first overall.

The Jags have yet to announce any additions to their staff aside from the signing of Pederson. However, the veteran head coach says he hopes to finalize his staff in the coming days.

Report: Bears promoting Bill Shuey to outside linebackers coach

The Bears continue to fill out their defensive coaching vacancies with the promotion of Bill Shuey to outside linebackers coach.

The Chicago Bears have a number of coaching vacancies to fill, and they’ve begun filling them on the defensive side of the ball.

Following the departure of Ted Monachino to the Atlanta Falcons, the Bears have found his replacement at outside linebackers coach. According to the Chicago Tribune‘s Brad Biggs, the Bears have promoted Bill Shuey to the position after he served as an assistant linebacker and pass rush analyst this past season.

Shuey joins the newest defensive coaching additions, including defensive coordinator Sean Desai, defensive line coach Chris Rumph and Bill McGovern as inside linebackers coach.

Shuey has worked with new defensive coordinator Sean Desai and previously served with the Philadelphia Eagles for 10 years, including three as a position coach.
