Athletes and sports figures who have died in 2023

The notable athletes, broadcasters, and sports figures we’ve lost so far in 2023.

Chip Kelly speaks movingly of his friend Bill McGovern at Pac-12 media day

‘If you want to touch the future, touch a person. That’s what Bill McGovern did.’ Chip Kelly spoke about his friend who recently died.

Pac-12 media day was dominated by the Pac-12 media rights story, which Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff handled poorly with his public remarks. Everyone wondered if the Pac-12 had privately arrived at a deal behind the scenes but wanted to wait to reveal it. Kliavkoff fended off that line of questioning from the assembled press in Las Vegas.

Pac-12 media rights questions overshadowed football, but there was still a lot of football to talk about. Players and coaches from the 12 different schools in the conference did a full range of media-scrum, side-session, and one-on-one interviews with various journalists, talk show hosts, and website publishers. How Pac-12 football teams stack up against each other was another central component of Friday’s events.

Then there was this very poignant moment, easily the most powerful of the whole day. UCLA coach Chip Kelly was deeply saddened by the death of his former defensive coordinator at UCLA, Bill McGovern. Kelly was profoundly touched by McGovern and wanted to make sure McGovern’s soulful life will be remembered.

Kelly, as relayed by UCLA commentator Tony Siracusa on a Trojans Wire special live show at The Voice of College Football, said this about McGovern:

“If you want to touch history, touch a rock. If you want to touch the present, touch a flower. If you want to touch the future, touch a person. That’s what Bill McGovern did.”

It’s a very moving meditation on living a purpose-driven life and dealing with the very natural fear of death human beings have:

“Good people leave a mark on everybody’s heart.” 🕊️

Former New York Giants linebackers coach Bill McGovern passed away on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.

“Early [Tuesday] morning we said goodbye to our beloved father and husband Bill after his long and difficult battle with cancer came to an end and today,” the McGovern family said in a statement issued through UCLA’s athletics department.

“We would like to thank the entire UCLA community for all of the love and support you gave to Bill and our entire family during this very difficult struggle. In particular, the McGovern family would like to thank UCLA head football coach Chip Kelly and his wife Jill, as well as all of the players, coaches, trainers, and support staff of the UCLA football program and their families. It was the honor of Bill’s coaching career to be the defensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins and this past season was one of the highlights of Bill’s coaching career.”

McGovern was hired by UCLA as their defensive coordinator in 2022 but due to his battle with cancer, he was forced to miss five games. After the season, he transitioned to an administrative role.

Prior to his time with UCLA, McGovern served as inside linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears (2021) and defensive assistant at Nebraska (2020).

From 2016 through 2019, McGovern was on staff with the Giants. He first served as their linebackers coach before becoming their inside linebackers coach for the 2019 season. His career in East Rutherford spanned three different head coaches — Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo (interim) and Pat Shurmur. He did not return after Joe Judge had been hired.

McGovern began his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-2015) after 28 years at the college level.

McGovern is survived by his wife, Colleen, and daughters Amanda, Delainey and Mackenzie.

Once a Giant, Always a Giant.

4 things to know about new Bears ILB coach Bill McGovern

The Bears have found their new inside linebackers coach in Bill McGovern, who replaces Mark DeLeone. Let’s get to know McGovern.

The Chicago Bears have found their new inside linebackers coach in Bill McGovern, who is the latest new addition to join a Bears staff with several coaching vacancies.

McGovern replaces Mark DeLeone, who served as inside linebackers coach for the Bears for the previous two seasons under former defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano.

With McGovern’s hiring, the Bears still have three spots fill: safeties coach, running back coach and passing game coordinator.

But let’s take a look at four things to know about Chicago’s new inside linebackers coach.

Report: Bears hiring Bill McGovern as inside linebackers coach

The Bears have found a new inside linebackers coach in Bill McGovern, who replaces the departed Mark DeLeone.

With several openings on the Chicago Bears’ coaching staff, Matt Nagy has started to fill those vacancies, starting on defense.

Not long after the Bears announced Chris Rumph would be succeeding Jay Rodgers as defensive line coach, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Bears have hired Bill McGovern as their new inside linebackers coach.

McGovern replaces the departed Mark DeLeone, who served as inside linebackers coach for two seasons under former defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano.

Last year, McGovern was a defensive assistant at Nebraska. Before that, he worked for the New York Giants (2016-19) and Philadelphia Eagles (2013-15).

Most notable, McGovern coached former Carolina Panthers star linebacker Luke Kuechly during his time at Boston College. Now, McGovern gets a chance to work with Bears rising star Roquan Smith.

Report: Giants will not retain assistants Bill McGovern, Gary Emanuel

The New York Giants will not retain assistant coaches Bill McGovern or Gary Emanuel.

The New York Giants will keep special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert on staff, but the same can not be said for linebackers coach Bill McGovern or defensive line coach Gary Emanuel.

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports that both McGovern and Emanuel will not be back in 2020.

Emanuel joined the Giants in 2018 under incoming head coach Pat Shurmur. He had previously coached the defensive line in both Indianapolis and San Francisco, in addition to various other college roles.

With news that the Giants had hired Freddie Roach to coach their defensive line, it was inevitable that Emanuel be shown the door.

Unlike Emanuel, McGovern had been on staff in East Rutherford since 2016, joining the team under then-head coach Ben McAdoo. He remained in that role through the transition to Shurmur, but could not survive another head coaching/staff change.

Prior to joining the Giants, McGovern was an outside linebackers coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.
