Jay Gogue issues statement, takes not-so-subtle shot at UAB’s Bill Clark

Auburn University President Jay Gogue issued a statement regarding the coaching search and the hiring of Bryan Harsin.

Auburn University President Jay Gogue let it be known that some of the rumors and reports that spread throughout the coaching search were false. In fact, he seemed to go after a candidate or two with a not-so-subtle statement.

In an email sent out to Auburn alumni and fans on Wednesday night, Gogue held nothing back.

It is also important to remember that not everything that is reported or posted on social media is accurate when it comes to coaching searches. In fact, some of it is disruptive, inaccurate and malicious. In our coaching search for example, no candidate was told that there were stipulations on who would serve on his coaching staff – not one. Only one trustee, who actually served on the search advisory group, had any part in the search process. Some candidates who reportedly “turned down” the Auburn job were never even offered the job. One candidate that made these statements never even had an interview, much less an offer.

That last line is especially specific toward UAB’s Bill Clark who claimed that he turned down the offer from Auburn because he would not have full autonomy of the coaching staff.

Per a report by AL.com, Clark was never offered the position but did have some talks with Auburn while Louisiana’s Billy Napier reportedly turned down the position to stay with the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The search ended with the hiring of Boise State’s Bryan Harsin. Gogue and Harsin appear to have already spoken on what evolved during the search.

Coach Harsin and I agree on many things and one thing is that much of what you see and read on social media are opinions or statements that are simply not based on fact. I regret that these comments hurt our university and many good Auburn people. Free speech is a treasured American right, but the Auburn family should also have the right to know the facts.

Auburn Coaching Search 7.0: Where do Tigers go from here?

The Auburn coaching search continues and the Tigers will have to look at some new candidates.

The Auburn coaching search has been turned on its head as multiple candidates have turned down the job including both Billy Napier and Bill Clark on Monday alone.

So where do the Tigers turn from here? Let’s open the book once again on all possible coaches that Auburn could go after along with the odds of them getting the job.

Report: Bill Clark no longer candidate for Auburn head coaching job

UAB”s Bill Clark is no longer a candidate for the head coaching job at Auburn.

The search continues.

On Monday evening, Brandon Marcello of 247Sports reported that UAB’s Bill Clark is no longer a candidate for the Auburn head coaching position.

Clark, who has rebuilt the Blazers program and has won two of the last three Conference USA titles, was a hot candidate for the past two days after Billy Napier and Steve Sarkisian both dropped out of the race.

Want to make this easy, Auburn? Call Hugh Freeze

Auburn is bumbling its coaching search but it could all be solved with one call to Hugh Freeze.

Auburn is making this search a whole lot harder than they should. The people in charge are turning what should be Coach Hiring 101 and turning it into rocket science.

It doesn’t have to be this hard. All they need to do is pick up the phone and call Hugh Freeze.

(As always, full disclosure that Freeze and I are friends.)

Listen, for all of you worried about the baggage he might bring to Auburn after his troubles at Ole Miss, I am here to settle you down. He’s a different man than he was then. I know firsthand. When we met in 2018 while I was working on a feature about him during his darkest days when he was unemployed, I asked him what he would do different if he got a second chance at coaching.

Curious, I question him on how he would handle being the head of a football program if given another chance. As he does with all of my questions, he doesn’t hold back, laying out part of a plan that he hopes he soon will present to athletic directors looking for reasons to hire him.

He ponders the question again, drifting off with his thoughts. He looks at me and states, “I will be more determined.”

He even admitted that he might have been in over his head during his days in Oxford. If you are afraid of him embarrassing the program, you shouldn’t be. Given another chance in the SEC, he’s not going to make the same mistakes twice. While many may consider him a hypocrite because of his failings while also being so upfront about his religious beliefs, stop it. Everyone makes mistakes in life. He has paid his penance for it, most importantly to his family

His building of Liberty into a top-25 team in just two seasons has been nothing but astounding. He has taken a roster of players that were overlooked by other FBS schools and won big, including a huge victory at Virginia Tech this past season.

More importantly, he has taken an Auburn and Gus Malzahn castoff in Malik Willis and turned him into an offensive machine. All of the things that Auburn said Willis couldn’t do, he has done.

We have seen what he can do at Ole Miss and, yes, while recruiting violations will always overshadow his tenure there, there is still one truth: he won. He won like the Rebels had hardly ever seen. He beat Alabama two years in a row including in Bryant-Denny Stadium. He beat the snot out of Kirby Smart and Georgia. Doesn’t that sound appealing to you considering the Tigers record against the Bulldogs recently?

His players truly love him. Attending practices as his guest at Liberty over the past year, I have seen the affection that the men who play for him have not only for Freeze but for the entire coaching staff. I’m basically a nobody but each and every player greeted me with a “Hello, sir.” Hey, hanging out with the head coach has some advantages, I suppose.

I’m not the only person endorsing him as ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit came out in favor of the Tigers going with Freeze.

“To me, I think you have to look at Hugh Freeze,” Herbstreit said. “I think you have to look at what he went through at Ole Miss, how he’s owned that, how he’s talked about that. You have to come to grips with that. You have to see if you can come to grips with that. And if you can, then you hire him — because he’s got an offense. He’s got a system. I think he is very different than Gus offensively even though they get labeled from the same coaching tree and coaching branch. I think he’s different in the pass game. I think he’s got a way about him. He competes. He’s done very well against (Alabama head coachNick Saban in recruiting and competing against him. I don’t know. That’s who I would look at.”

There’s no reason he shouldn’t be given a chance to come and win at Auburn. And trust me, he would win. He would be the slam-dunk hire that we all were expecting once the powers that be paid $21 million to fire Gus Malzahn, ironically one of Freeze’s good friends.

This is how I described Freeze in the final part of my 2018 feature:

Publicly, he is a football coach who can be outspoken about his beliefs; a man who uses his fame to advance his platform; and a man who was part of a major investigation into his football program that led to violations and his eventual firing for personal transgressions.

Privately, you find the person who people cling to, a man who friends describe as a very genuine person through good and bad and someone whose sense of humor will have you crying in laughter. He’s a man who sticks to his conviction but would never judge others because he has his struggles as well, some that became extremely public. He’s charismatic, self-deprecating and has so many other assets that you appreciate in a human being.

Don’t make this more complicated than it is, Auburn. A man who is ready and prepared for the job is just waiting for the call and, if the Tigers don’t grab him, some SEC school will soon. Don’t let the opportunity pass by.

Auburn Coaching Search 6.0: With Napier out, who is now the favorite?

Billy Napier has taken his name out of the Auburn coaching search so who is now the favorite to land the job?

It was just hours ago when Billy Napier was the favorite to land the Auburn head coaching position.

Now, with reports being confirmed that Napier is out, the Tigers will have to cross him off the list and continue searching.

So who is left as candidates? Here’s a quick look along with their odds of getting hired.

Auburn fans have grown tired of the ‘good ol’ boy’ system

Report: Billy Napier has turned down Auburn job

Louisiana head coach Billy Napier reportedly turned down the Auburn position.

Billy Napier quickly became the favorite to land the Auburn head coaching position on Monday after it was revealed both Kevin Steele and Steve Sarkisian are out of the race.

That didn’t last long. Per Shannon Terry of 247Sports, Napier has turned down the Auburn job.

In his third year at Louisiana, Napier led the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 9-1 record. In 2019, the Cajuns went 11-3.

Update: Bruce Feldman has also reported that Napier will stay at Louisiana.

Report: Kevin Steele, Steve Sarkisian no longer candidates for Auburn job

Kevin Steele and Steve Sarkisian are reportedly no longer candidates for the Auburn head coaching position.

The list is being narrowed even more for Auburn.

Per Dennis Dodd, Kevin Steele is no longer being considered for the head coaching position and, per Auburn Undercover, neither is Steve Sarkisian who did not interview this weekend as expected.

Steele, who was one of the favorites to become the new head coach after spending five seasons as defensive coordinator for the Tigers, will serve as interim head coach for Auburn’s game against Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl.

Louisiana’s Billy Napier has reportedly taken the lead to become the next head coach.

Auburn Coaching Search 4.0: New names possible added to candidate list

Report: Bill Clark, Neal Brown expected to interview for Auburn job

West Virginia coach Neal Brown and UAB coach Bill Clark have been invited to interview for the vacant Auburn position.

Auburn’s search for its next head coach is picking up steam as candidates are coming in for interviews starting today and over the next few days.

Two new candidates that have reportedly been offered invitations to interview for the job are UAB’s Bill Clark and West Virginia’s Neal Brown, per Phillip Marshall of Auburn Undercover.

Brown, who is his second season in Morgantown, got his big break as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Kentucky back in 2013-14. In charge of Troy from 2015-18, he led the Trojans to a 35-16 overall record, one Sun Belt title and wins at both LSU and Nebraska.

Clark was the man responsible for building the UAB program after it was brought back in 2014. He has had instant success, putting together five straight winning seasons including 11 wins in 2018 and two conference titles after defeating Marshall on Friday night for the 2020 championship.

Others set to interview for the job are Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, Louisiana head coach Billy Napier and Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott has declined an interview.
