Bill Belichick jokingly makes remark about Rob Gronkowski’s ‘big announcement’

Bill Belichick’s responses to the media lately have included plenty of humor.

Bill Belichick has been full of jokes lately. He likely took a shot at Lane Johnson in regards to his comment saying that the New England Patriots don’t have fun, and he made some comical remarks regarding Julian Edelman’s touchdown pass in Week 11.

The most recent comment that he made was in regards to Rob Gronkowski’s ‘big announcement’ that’s set for Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET.

Belichick was asked about the announcement on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni & Fauria”, and gave a hilarious answer.

“Yeah, I’m sure my phone will be ringing off the hook with all the alerts I have on it,” Belichick said jokingly. “I’m sure it will be crazy.”

Gronkowski retired from the NFL after last season and has sent mixed signals on whether or not he’d stay retired. It’s very likely that Gronkowski is going to announce a career move, and that he won’t make his comeback to the league.

If Gronkowski were to make a return, he’d have to report to the team before Nov. 30. Belichick and the Patriots will likely move on this season without Gronkowski on the field, but, there is a small window to hope for his NFL return.

The Patriots’ locker room went nuts when Bill Belichick rewarded them with a day off

A very happy Bill Belichick rewarded his guys with a day off after a big win over the Eagles.

The New England Patriots bounced back from their only loss of the season with a big win over the Eagles in Philadelphia on Sunday, though it wasn’t exactly a pretty win.

While Tom Brady and the offense didn’t look great, the Patriots’ defense had another stellar performance after a little bit of a rocky start.

Bill Belchick, however, was in a good after the game and he surprised the team by telling them they deserved their first “Victory Monday” of the season – which means players can take the day off and the week won’t start until Wednesday. Belichick also had fun later trolling the Eagles, too.

The players in the locker room were really happy to hear their coach announce the day off, as you can see at the :33 mark of this video from the locker room:

So yeah, doesn’t seem like the Patriots are panicking too much about their offensive struggles. 9-1 is a pretty good start to the season.

I just think we could all use a Victory Monday, though.

Bill Belichick seems to have ‘fun’ with Lane Johnson after beating Eagles

It seemed like a harmless remark. But Bill Belichick was likely trolling.

Coach Bill Belichick may have taken a subtle jab at Philadelphia Eagles tackle Lane Johnson on Sunday after the New England Patriots logged a 17-10 win at Lincoln Financial Field.

Johnson has ripped into the Patriots on multiple occasions, most notably saying that New England is a “fear-based organization” with players who “act like [expletive] robots” and don’t have fun. So perhaps Belichick had a response for Johnson a postgame press conference on Sunday.

“It looked like everyone had fun out there today and we played a lot of good energy and it was good to come down here and get a win,” Belichick said.

Could it have been a coincidence? Surely.

Could it have been Belichick acting as a troll? Also, surely.

Here’s a look at what Johnson originally said after the Eagles beat the Patriots in Super Bowl LII. He was making an appearance on the Barstool Sports podcast “Pardon My Take.”

“I just think that the Patriot Way is a fear-based organization,” Johnson told the podcast’s hosts. “Obviously, do they win? Hell yes, they win. They’ve won for a long time. Do I think people enjoy [it] and can say, ‘I had a lot of fun playing there’? No, I don’t. That’s just the God’s honest truth. They’re successful, but when they go to interviews, they act like [expletive] robots. Hey, stop being a [expletive]. We can be cordial for a little bit. You only get to do this job one time, so let’s have fun while we’re doing it. Not to be reckless, but I’d much rather have fun and win a Super Bowl than be miserable and win five Super Bowls. But hey, it is what it is.”

5 takeaways from Patriots’ 17-10 win over Eagles

Here are five takeaways from the Patriots’ hard-fought win over the Eagles.

The New England Patriots are 9-1 this season, but they still have a ton of room for improvement as the postseason creeps up.

New England defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in a hard-fought 17-10 game. Tom Brady and the offense struggled mightily in the red zone and the defense had a tremendous bounce-back game. The only Patriots touchdown came from a double-pass trick play that was thrown by Julian Edelman. The rest of the points came from Nick Folk field goals — which was definitely a positive from this game.

Brady understands that this offense needs to crank it up a notch before the postseason begins and that the Patriots are currently playing through the most difficult stretch of the schedule. The next three games include the Dallas Cowboy, Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. It’ll be a test for this defense and it’ll give the offense a playoff atmosphere to prepare for the postseason.

Here are five takeaways from the game.

Tom Brady has been trending in a negative direction

Either Brady’s age or the lack of protection has led to a steady decline in production for the 42 year old quarterback. With the combination of his 21 incompletions and inability to score in the red zone, Brady has relied heavily on the defense to bail him out.

Brady started off the first five games with ten touchdowns and one interception — he’s had four touchdowns and three interceptions in his last five games. The level of competition likely played a factor, and he’s also without key offensive linemen and his critical blocker with James Develin.

He was visibly frustrated in his press conference after the game and Brady is conscious of the fact that the offense isn’t clicking right now. It doesn’t help that the rushing attack has been non-existent so far this season and that the receiving corps continues to change. N’Keal Harry had a positive debut game for the Patriots and his presence along with Mohamed Sanu should play a huge role heading into the postseason.

Whether it’s Brady’s age or the lack of protection, Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels have limited time to find a solution.

It sure seemed like Bill Belichick had ‘fun’ trolling the Eagles after the Patriots’ win

“It looked like everyone had fun out there today.”

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick doesn’t usually have a lot to say after games but he always seems to understand all the storylines and talking points that are going around his team.

Which makes something that he said during the opening statement of his postgame press conference after Sunday’s win over Philadelphia a little interesting… and fun.

Remember when Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson said shortly after Philly’s Super Bowl win over the Patriots in 2018 that it didn’t seem like Patriots players had any fun playing for the now six-time Super Bowl champs?

Well, Belichick slid this gem into his presser on Sunday, saying: “It looked like everyone had fun out there today.”

It was part of the last line of his opening statement:

Was that done on purpose by Belichick? I’m gonna go with yes, absolutely, because the man always knows what he’s doing and saying “everyone had fun” doesn’t seem like something he’d normally say after a game.

The old football coach decided to have some fun of his own after the game, and it was fantastic.

Well played, Bill Belichick.

Bill Belichick has plenty of jokes after Julian Edelman TD pass

“Keeps his quarterback rating pretty high.” -Bill Belichick on Julian Edelman

Bill Belichick hopes Julian Edelman gets the proper treatment after Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11.

The New England Patriots receiver cannot forget to ice his shoulder. Why? Because of his touchdown pass, of course. Though New England’s 17-10 win was hard fought defensive battle, Belichick took a playful tone when discussing Edelman’s touchdown pass in a postgame press conference at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.

The coach recounted the Patriots’ touchdown-scoring trick play. On a third-and-11 from the 15-yard line, quarterback Tom Brady zipped the ball backward to Edelman in the flat. The former Kent State quarterback spotted and targeted receiver Phillip Dorsett open in the middle of end zone for a touchdown.

“Good read on the play,” Belichick said during a postgame press conference at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. “He checked the crosser and it was open. We had another option, but (Phillip Dorsett) was open. Edelman made a good decision.

“Keeps his quarterback rating pretty high, so I’m that he has to ice his shoulder down this week and massage it and everything else,” the Patriots coach smirked. “That was great. That was a great play by Julian.”

Indeed, Edelman boasts a perfect passer rating on his regular-season career.

Edelman has thrown a touchdown pass in the playoffs, with a throw to former Patriots receiver Danny Amendola in 2015. The 51-yard touchdown helped New England manage a comeback win. Edelman, of course, was a quarterback at Kent State before the Patriots converted him to punt returner and, eventually, to receiver. But that hasn’t stopped Belichick from using the former quarterback’s passing abilities.

After the Patriots’ win on Sunday night, Edelman riffed off his coach’s comments with a post on Twitter: “Time to ice the ole’ wing after that one.”

Eagles’ TE’s could have huge day vs. Patriots with Patrick Chung ruled out

Patriots rule out safety Patrick Chung vs. Eagles

[jwplayer A3qs8Nwq]

The Philadelphia Eagles were already starting to become tight end dominant in the passing game, and with Patriots star safety Patrick Chung being ruled out for Sunday, 12 personnel could be the formation of choice.

New England ruled out Chung for Sunday’s road game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to injuries to his heel and chest.

Veteran safety Duron Harmon will get the start in his place.

With the Eagles having the best tight end tandem in the NFL, Bill Belichick and company can expect to see a ton of Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert on the field together.

During the last meeting between these two teams, Ertz had seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles thrilling Super Bowl LII victory against New England.

With Alshon Jeffery also out of this game, it’ll be pertinent for Carson Wentz to develop a rhythm with both guys early on, helping to open up things for JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Miles Sanders.

Expect New England to dabble with a different scheme on Sunday, entrusting All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore with the job of slowing down Zach Ertz. Until Nelson Agholor, Jordan Matthews or Arcega-Whiteside can prove themselves as viable threats on the outside, Gilmore will likely be best served to shadow Ertz on Sunday and forcing someone else on the Eagles offense to beat New England.

That man could end up being Goedert, who has the skill level to take advantage of any mismatch presented to him.

What Bill Belichick wouldn’t say in Week 11 in preparation for the Eagles

A deep dive into the topics New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick avoided.

Ahead of the New England Patriots’ (8-1) Week 11 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles (5-4), Bill Belichick didn’t mind talking about Super Bowl LII, a game which he admitted was a prominent memory.

How could it not be? It’s one of the New England Patriots coach’s three Super Bowl losses.

Belichick also seemed open to praising some of his opponent’s top players, like quarterback Carson Wentz, linebacker Brandon Graham and tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert, among others. (Belichick is always ready to kill his opponent with kindness.)

But there were some substantial issues that Belichick didn’t want to address. Let’s make sure to broach those topics, even if The Hoodie elects to deflect on them. Here’s what Belichick wouldn’t say this week.

1. Is Carson Wentz playing well this season?

What Belichick said: “He’s a good quarterback. He can throw from anywhere. The longer the play extends, the harder it is to cover, but he can make all the throws in the pocket too. I think that’s an issue.”

What we think Belichick’s thinking: What’s really the issue? Wentz is averaging 2.7 seconds before his throws, which is 27th worst in the NFL, according to ESPN. Belichick will make that an issue for Wentz. In part, his slow release is probably because his receivers have struggled this season with separation. But whether the blame falls on Wentz or his receivers, he’s leaving himself vulnerable to the Patriots’ pass-rush, which has 32 sacks, fourth-most in the NFL. They may not bring much pressure (Wentz actually thrives against blitzes). But they’re going to try to fool him with their amoeba defense to generate pressure with three- and four-man rushes.

2. What similarities are there between Belichick and Eagles coach Doug Pederson?

What Belichick said: “I don’t know. Good question for somebody else.”

What we think Belichick’s thinking: There are a few similarities. For a time, Pederson was an aggressive decision-maker, who was building innovative and trendy schemes. The biggest difference? The Patriots excelled after winning Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI and LIII. Pederson, meanwhile, is struggling to keep Philly over .500. That’s the most substantial difference. Oh, and the Eagles “have some fun” but the Patriots don’t — or whatever.

3. Any thoughts on Myles Garrett’s bout of blind rage?

What Belichick said: “We’ve addressed that multiple times. … We can go back and look at 50 of these through the years, some type of fighting or ejections or whatever. They’re all a little bit different. I wouldn’t say that it’s – like offside penalties, there’s a lot of – different things happen, different situations, so forth and so on. But yeah, fundamentally, I tell players what we should do in those situations, how we should handle them, and I think they’ve done a good job of it.”

What we think Belichick’s thinking: Tom Brady told reporters that Belichick used Garrett’s outburst as a coaching moment for players on Friday. And while there seems to be a narrative that the Patriots are immune to such behavior, retired tight end Rob Gronkowski was suspended for a dirty, late hit on Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White in 2017. (But Belichick would never remind the media of that PR nightmare.) Something similar happened in New England — though not quite on the insane scale of Garrett’s violent behaviors. The helmet attack was fairly close to unprecedented.

4. By way of Alex Guerrero, Tom Brady mentioned he might play until he’s 47. In the context of history, that’s a pretty wild idea, right?

What Belichick said: “I’m really just trying to focus on getting our team ready to go against the Eagles and trying to get myself ready to do a good job down there. So, we’ll leave all of that for another day.”

What we think Belichick’s thinking: It would be remarkable, but it ain’t happening. Brady is not falling off a cliff, but he’s also not the same player he was in 2007, in part because of aging and in part because of personnel. It would be shocking if Brady made it to 47. Considering Brady’s contract expires after this season, it would be fairly surprising if Brady made it 45, his original target age.

5. So… Is N’Keal Harry playing on Sunday?

What Belichick said: “We’ll activate the players that we feel give us the best chance to compete against the Eagles.”

What we think Belichick’s thinking: He wasn’t ready for the game against the Ravens, who the Patriots clearly respected as one of the best teams in the NFL. New England couldn’t afford to test the waters with the rookie — they needed proven players they could trust. Against the Eagles, perhaps the Patriots see avenues to getting Harry involved. And while Mohamed Sanu’s reviews of Harry were positive this week, Phillip Dorsett told Patriots Wire that Harry, the 2019 first-round pick, is still figuring things out. It’s probable that Harry plays. It’s possible he doesn’t.

6. What does he remember about Colin Kaepernick’s game from 2016?

What Belichick said: “I don’t really have any comment on that. We’re trying to get ready for the Eagles. That’s really where my focus is.”

What we think Belichick’s thinking: Belichick let defensive end Michael Bennett skip the national anthem during his tenure with the Patriots. So Belichick will allow a level of disclosed protest. But it’s fair to question whether Kaepernick might see that as repression. Regardless, Kaepernick would provide an intriguing option to replace third-string quarterback Cody Kessler, lately because the Patriots face a handful of mobile quarterbacks in the coming weeks. Kaepernick has the skillset to be an asset on the scout team. But maybe that value doesn’t outweigh the political dialogue and media attention that Kaep brings.

Bill Belichick deflects questions on Colin Kaepernick workout

“We’re trying to get ready for the Eagles. That’s where my focus is.”

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has just one thing on his mind. And it’s clearly not Colin Kaepernick.

The NFL announced the Patriots will be one of the team’s attending the free agent quarterback’s workout in Atlanta on Saturday. Belichick has his eyes set on the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

“I don’t really have any comment on that,” Belichick said. “We’re trying to get ready for the Eagles. That’s where my focus is.”

Belichick did not appear the slightest bit intrigued about how Kaepernick, who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, will look either.

“I’m really focused on trying to beat the Eagles,” Belichick said. “That intrigues me a lot right there, is trying to get our team as well prepared as possible to play a good football team that’s playing very well that, obviously we didn’t do very well against the last time we played them in a competitive situation. So, that’s really what I’m focused the most on.”

Belichick did not get into who the Patriots will be sending to Atlanta either. Earlier this week, he said Kaepernick’s workout was a question for Nick Caserio, the Patriots Director of Player Personnel.

“Like I said, I’m really focused on the Eagle game,” Belichick said. “We have a personnel department. Those are the kind of things they do.”

The Patriots (8-1) will travel to Lincoln Financial Field to face the Philadelphia Eagles (5-4) on Sunday.
