The biggest gaming news of the week: August 19, 2022

Labor complaints against Nintendo, Fallout TV show leaks, and Dragon Ball taking over Fortnite were among the big headlines.

It’s time to reflect on the silliness of video games, folks. Once again, we must begrudgingly accept that Breath of the Wild 2 isn’t coming out in 2022 anymore. It’s quite a burden to bear.

Unlike last week, there was a steady stream of fun announcements over the past few days. Wave Race 64 is returning after years of being nothing but a distant memory, and Saints Row is arriving soon after. Meanwhile, we got teases for Redfall and The Last of Us Part 1 — both of which are excellent examples of how beautiful current-generation console games can be.

As a reminder, some QuakeCon freebies are up for grabs, courtesy of Epic and Game Pass. So hop on those while offers still stand!

Ok, that’s the honorable mentions down. Let’s roll our sleeves and get into the week’s biggest headlines.

The biggest gaming news of the week: August 12, 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog and Dragon Ball’s Goku were the big names in gaming this week. As goofy as it sounds!

August is almost halfway over already. Proof that, once again, time is but a figment of our imaginations. Think about it: Breath of the Wild 2 still won’t be out once you’re done reading this! We’d all be cooking apples in Hyrule in a fair and just universe by now.

Unfortunately, we’re currently in a dry spell in terms of big video game announcements, newsworthy beats, reveals, and silly nonsense, which last week had all of in spades. In fairness, Kirby’s Dream Buffet and Final Fantasy 14 patch 6.2 release date information drew up some excitement, especially the latter. Sadly, Marvel’s Midnight Suns isn’t getting the same treatment since it was delayed to 2023. It won’t be the last high-profile release to suffer that fate either, as the past two years of pandemic-related troubles are impacting developers worldwide.

There were numerous smaller feel-good stories over the past few days, thankfully. Particularly of the games-to-film sort. Two fresh-faced actors joined HBO’s The Last of Us TV Show, while Sonic’s third movie is seemingly coming along. Still incredible that either of those even exists after how many awful game adaptations there are.

Well, that does it for minor headlines. Let’s finally delve into this week’s most noteworthy video game news items!

The biggest gaming news of the week: August 5, 2022

The Last of Us Part 2, Skyrim Ohio, and Pokémon’s edible dog were among this week’s headlines.

We keep speeding through 2022 like time doesn’t exist. Seriously, can you believe there are less than five months left until Christmas? Scary thought, that. Let’s forget about it and focus on video games before I spontaneously combust from stress.

The games industry was a smidge less silly than last week. There were interesting announcements from PlayStation, Riot, and Dead By Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive. However, none of those stood up to the hype that was Pokémon Presents. It’s too bad Scarlet and Violet‘s legendaries are kind of ‘blah’ overall.

As a reminder, there’s been a fine selection of freebies over the past few days courtesy of Epic, Xbox, and Ubisoft. Some of these are limited-time deals, so don’t wait much longer!

Now that we’ve gotten through the fluff, it’s time to reflect on this week’s biggest stories.

The biggest gaming news of the week: July 29, 2022

Grand Theft Auto 6, Nier: Automata, and Roblox dominated headlines.

Another summer month is nearly behind us. Thank goodness, because the never-ending flood of depressing headlines gets old. At least video games can take our minds off everything, if only for a brief moment in time.

In a nice change of pace from last week, the games industry was booming with massive stories. Release date information for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide came out of nowhere — proving that green orcs punching each other is still a valid business venture for developers. Please, tabletop connoisseurs, don’t get upset at us for mentioning those two franchises in the same sentence. Let’s all just collectively groan that Lord of the Rings: Gollum was delayed again.

Alright, enough lollygagging. Time to look at the most prominent video game-related headlines from this week.

The biggest gaming news of the week: July 22, 2022

Netflix’s Resident Evil show, the Microsoft buyout of Activision Blizzard, and a wild Halo challenge made headlines this week.

We’re roughly halfway through summer at long last. Imagine going outside and not immediately melting into a sizzling puddle of flesh and bone — I miss those days, friends. Thankfully, avoiding the sun is easy when staying inside and playing video games like a nocturnal cave creature is an option.

Unlike last week, many recent headlines didn’t involve massive release date announcements. There were more strange little happenings, like Doom co-creator John Romero making another FPS, Diablo promotional tattoos, and an official Lego Atari 2600. The only massive hype-cycle adjacent stuff came from Madden NFL 23’s rating week reveals.

That does it for honorable mentions, though. So let’s look at the most prominent gaming stories from this week.

The biggest gaming news of the week: July 15, 2022

Assassin’s Creed, Madden NFL 23, and Red Dead Online dominated the headlines.

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through July. Seriously, what is it with the passage of time not respecting our boundaries? At least video games are a decent distraction from the never-ending free fall towards old age.

There were plenty of bizarre minor stories this week within the games industry. Facebook wants everyone to play along with The Walking Dead: Last Mile like it’s 2010. Meanwhile, someone beat Elden Ring with a piano because why not. Nothing raised eyebrows quite like that wild Starfield release date theory. It’s almost like the summer heat is driving everyone bananas.

Enough with the honorable mentions, though. Let’s recap the biggest gaming news items from the past week.

The biggest gaming news of the week: July 8, 2022

God of War Ragnarok, Apex Legends, and Final Fantasy 14 dominated the headlines.

There’s never a dull moment in the wonderful world of video games. Sure, it can be full of silly nonsense like EA claiming single-player is for suckers, but whatever. Let’s not dwell on bad takes.

For whatever reason, most of this week’s minor headlines were about cool fan projects and feats. Whether it was Skyrim, Silent Hill 2, or Cuphead — passion projects took center stage. Heck, one Twitch streamer even made landlord-banning his thing.

Now, let’s move on from the honorable mentions and dive into the biggest gaming news items of the week.

The biggest gaming news of the week: July 1, 2022

John Cena, Metroid re-releases, and Final Fantasy rickrolls were all over the headlines.

The bananas promotional month of June is behind us. Thank goodness! If there were another not-E3 showcase, what little sanity still bouncing around my skull would be lost like tears in the rain.

That’s not to say there weren’t some cool headlines this week. Steven Spielberg apparently loves gaming, which should come as no surprise after watching Minority Report. Celebrities are human too; who knew! Too bad he’s not still working on the Halo TV series. Speaking of that, Halo Infinite is finally getting co-op. Well, beta testing begins soon anyway – one that’s coming eight months after launch. Not exactly the timeliest addition, eh?

Over the past seven days, there were a lot of weird stories. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun stuff, but you’ll see what I mean below.

The biggest gaming news of the week: June 17, 2022

Between Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil 4, remakes dominated headlines.

Not-E3 is over. It’s been a hot minute since a week’s worth of gaming news radiated with such chaotic energy. One moment, we’re celebrating that TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is finally out, and the next, Neill Blomkamp is making some ridiculous Gran Turismo movie. Please, let’s have more chill next time.

Jokes aside, nearly every press conference was absolute fire. Microsoft’s massive Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase gave release dates for highly-anticipated games like Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4, even though the extended show was pretty ho-hum. Capcom’s show had plenty of cool reveals too. Yet still no Resident Evil PS1 classics collection, much to my chagrin.

Right, no more honorable mentions. Let’s look at this week’s big headlines.

The biggest gaming news of the week: June 10, 2022

GameStop walkouts, new Xbox consoles, and Diablo Immortal dominated headlines this week.

Week one of not-E3 is over, reminding everyone that video game hype cycles are tiring. For instance, ask any God of War diehard how they feel these days. The rumor mill grinds away at us all.

Thankfully, there’s plenty of cool stuff happening. The Goldeneye remaster is all but certain, another Silent Hill movie could be happening, and Halo Infinite is getting official co-op support. That last one is almost seven months too late, but hey, soon you can sticky-grenade friends by mistake!

There were also several more minor announcements worth noting. A fan-favorite character returns in Street Fighter 6, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns has a release date. So do Deliver Us Mars and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.

No more honorable mentions, though. Let’s get into this week’s biggest stories.
