Ohio State softball vs. Minnesota in the Big Ten tournament: How to Watch

See if the OSU softball team can pull off the upset and advance in the Big Ten Tournament. #GoBucks

The Ohio State softball team used a banner day from slugger Sam Hackenbracht to beat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the first round of the Big Ten softball tournament Wednesday and now face the challenge of going against a very good No. 3 seed Minnesota on Thursday to try and stay alive in the conference tourney.

OSU did not fare well in three games against the Golden Gophers this season, dropping all three at home and being outscored by a 24-7 margin.

Still, they have to play the games and Ohio State has the offense to go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the conference when on its game. We’ll find out today if the Buckeyes have what it takes.

2023 Big Ten softball tournament bracket

Follow along and root for the Ohio State softball team. #GoBucks

For those of you who have yet to catch up, the game of softball has surpassed the interest in college baseball over the last couple of years. We’ll always love the great American pastime at the college level, but softball has garnered more ratings and more interest as of late.

And so it is, that the Ohio State softball team is looking to make a run in the Big Ten softball tournament as the No. 6 seed. It needed to be a top-four seed to earn a bye, so it’ll have to play an extra game to get into the quarterfinals where it hopes to do some damage.

All told, twelve of the fourteen teams make the conference tournament, with Michigan State and Purdue being left out of all the fun that will take place in Champaign, Illinois, on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Ohio State softball advances to semifinal of Big Ten tournament

Ohio State softball is moving on! #GoBucks

The Bucks are hot, as they say.

The Ohio State softball team built upon its first-roundย victory over Purdue on Wednesday by following it up with a 5-1 win over No. 3 seeded Illinois on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the Big Ten softball tournament.

For the second-straight game of the tournament, the Buckeyes struck first. Both teams went scoreless through the first two innings, but the Illini committed a two-out error in the top of the third inning that proved to be costly. Instead of getting out of the inning, Illinois gave OSU a second life that it made good on, plating four runs in the inning to jump ahead 4-0.

Sam Hackenbracht got it started on a grounder that was thrown away with two on. It led to one run and kept the inning going for McKenzie Bump who hustled out an infield single that scored two more on another throwing error. The Illini then committed its third error of the inning when Kami Kortokrax dribbled a ball that the shortstop couldn’t handle, scoring Niki Carver.

Things remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning behind another strong showing by Lexie Handley until Melina Wilkinson launched a solo shot to give Ohio State a 5-0 lead. Illinois would add one run in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little too late.

With the win, the Buckeyes will now head into tomorrow with an opportunity to win a game to get to the tournament championship game. They will face off with No. 2 seedย Nebraska at 2 pm ET. The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

Ohio State softball team wins first game of Big Ten tournament

The softball team is off to a good start in the Big Ten Tournament.

The Ohio State softball team got off to a winning start in the Big Ten tournament on Wednesday.

Seeded No. 6, the Buckeyes broke the seal on their 2022 tournament with a matchup with No. 11 seed Purdue and it didn’t take the scarlet and gray long to get on the board. After blanking the Boilermakers in the top of the first, OSU came back with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Melina Wilkinson.

Inning No. 2 was even more productive at the plate for Ohio State. The Buckeyes put up four runs to lead 6-0 after just two innings. Jaycee Ruberti had a bases-clearing double to plate the first three runs of the inning, followed by a Sam Hackenbracht three-run homer.

OSU would tack on two more runs to cap the scoring on a walk-off run rule after six innings. Meanwhile, pitcher Lexie Handley pitched another gem, allowing just two hits and striking out nine for her 21st win of the year.

The win allows Ohio State to advance in the winner’s bracket where it’ll take on No. 3 seed Illinois at approximately 1:30 PM ET on Thursday.
