Michigan State basketball will open up conference play this upcoming week

Michigan State basketball will open up conference play this upcoming week, so it’s only fitting we get an updated batch of power rankings from David Klein of Spartans Illustrated.

Klein released his “FINAL Pre-Szn B1G (Basketball) Rankings” on Sunday, and he has the Spartans near the top of the league. Klein broke up the power rankings into tiers and has the Spartans at the top of the second tier (Conference Contenders). Overall, Michigan State is listed at No. 5 of 18 teams in Klein’s rankings.

Michigan State is currently 6-2 overall and coming off a strong showing in the Maui Invitational. The Spartans finished in third place in the loaded event, which included a marquee win over North Carolina in the finale.

Michigan State basketball opens conference play with a road game at Minnesota on Wednesday. From there, the Spartans will host Nebraska on Saturday.

Spartans listed in bottom half of Athlon Sports’ Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings

Michigan State football is listed in the bottom half of the league in Athlon Sports’ Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings

Michigan State football is listed in the bottom half of the league in Athlon Sports’ Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings.

Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports has put together a batch of preseason power rankings for the new 18-team Big Ten and he’s not particularly high on the Spartans. But also isn’t burying Michigan State either.

Lassan has Michigan State at No. 13 in the league, which is one sport behind Minnesota and one spot ahead of UCLA. Here’s a bit of what Lassan had to say about the Spartans:

“New coach Jonathan Smith is one of the offseason’s top hires, but the Spartans bring back only nine starters off a team that went 4-8 last year. If Smith is to exceed expectations in ’24, Oregon State transfer quarterback Aidan Chiles has to deliver a breakout year, while an offensive line that returns only one starter needs to quickly fall into place.”

Where is Rutgers football in the On3Sports Big Ten power rankings?

The Big Ten power rankings from On3 are out.

Following a solid spring and with a very strong core, the arrow appears to be pointed up Rutgers football in the Big Ten.

And that very much includes the media, with conventional wisdom seeing Rutgers as an improved team in 2024. In their Big Ten power rankings this week, On3 placed the Scarlet Knights in the top half of the conference.

The high placement for Rutgers reflects the improvement made by Rutgers as well as the optimism from the win over Miami in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.

Rutgers finished last year 7-6 and with a bowl win for the first time since 2014.

On3’s Jesse Simonton puts Rutgers as his No. 8 team in his post-spring power rankings:

“…if Minnesota transfer Athan Kaliakmanis is the answer at quarterback then this is a team that could definitely finish in the top half (or better) of the Big Ten this fall…The defense returns the bulk of its starters off a Top 20 unit in 2023.”

Ohio State leads the way in the power rankings followed by Oregon and Michigan.

MSU listed in bottom half of CBS Sports’ Post-Spring Big Ten power rankings

In the eyes of CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli, Michigan State football is a bottom-half team in the Big Ten as we exit the spring.

Fornelli put out a post-spring batch of Big Ten power rankings and the Spartans landed in the bottom half of the new 18-team league. Fornelli has the Spartans at No. 12 in his power rankings — one spot behind Maryland and one spot ahead of Illinois.

Here’s a little bit of Fornelli had to say about Michigan State:

“It has been an offseason of change in East Lansing, Michigan. There was an exodus of players, as is typically the case when there’s a regime change, but the Spartans lost some key contributors on defense to the portal this spring.”

To no surprise, Ohio State and Oregon were at the top of Fornelli’s power rankings, but how did the rest of the league shake out?
