Updated Big Ten tournament odds: Penn State favored in first-round matchup

Penn State is a slight favorite in the first-round matchup with Minnesota in the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament. Updated odds from Tipico…

Penn State men’s basketball may have had their fair share of struggles away from home this season, but the updated odds for the first round of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament show the Nittany Lions will actually be a favorite against Minnesota. The odds for the first-round matchups in the Big Ten tournament from Tipico peg Penn State as a slight favorite against the Gophers.

Penn State is favored by 2.5 points against Minnesota in their first-round matchup in the Big Ten tournament according to Tipico. The last time Penn State was the favorite, the Nittany Lions were blown away at home by Nebraska, a program that went on a perfectly-timed tear right at the end of the season. But Penn State played tough in their final two road games of the season against Illinois and Rutgers. Illinois claimed the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament and Rutgers earned a double-bye with the No. 4 seed.

Penn State and Minnesota split their regular-season series with a pair of games played within a week of each other after an earlier matchup had to be rescheduled. Minnesota handed Penn State a 76-70 loss in the first meeting in mid-February. Penn State blew out the Gophers in the revenge game in Happy Valley five days later, with an upset of Michigan State in the middle for Penn State.

Here are the updated odds from Tipico.

Updated Odds for Penn State vs. Minnesota via Tipico:

  • Penn State -2.5 (-120)
  • Minnesota +2.5 (-105)
  • Penn State moneyline: -165
  • Minnesota moneyline: +133
  • Over 124.5 (-112)
  • Under 124.5 (-108)

The Big Ten men’s basketball season came down to the wire as seeds were being determined, and Illinois managed to secure the conference’s top seed in the Big Ten tournament, which is set to get underway on Wednesday.

Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Rutgers each earned a double-bye and won’t have to play a game in the conference tournament until Friday. Meanwhile, Nebraska and Northwestern will officially kick off the Big Ten tournament on Wednesday, with Penn State facing Minnesota in the second game of the first-round action on Wednesday evening.

Here is the full men’s tournament bracket, as provided by the Big Ten on Sunday evening.

The winner of the Penn State-Minnesota game will face Ohio State on Thursday, while the winner of the Nebraska-Northwestern matchup will advance to face Iowa in the second round. Other second-round matchups include Michigan vs. Indiana and Michigan State facing Maryland.

The entire Big Ten tournament will air on Big Ten Network for the first three rounds. The conference semifinals will air on CBS on Saturday and the championship game will be played in its traditional Sunday afternoon slot, leading right into Selection Sunday for the NCAA tournament.

Penn State’s only shot at making the tournament is to go on the most shocking of runs to take the Big Ten tournament championship. But Penn State’s record away from home is alarming with just one win away from Happy Valley against Big Ten competition this season.

Penn State split the regular-season series with Minnesota, with the home team winning each game.
