Rutgers men’s lacrosse gets impressive road win over No. 6 Loyola

Rutgers men’s lacrosse got an important win over Loyola.

Rutgers men’s lacrosse got a huge resume builder on Saturday with a 10-6 win against No. 6 Loyola.

The home win helps right the ship for the Scarlet Knights after last weekend’s tough loss at No. 20 Army. With Saturday afternoon’s result, No. 14 Rutgers is now 3-1 on the season.

Last week’s loss at Army saw Rutgers drop eight spots in the media poll.

Rutgers was led by three goals and four assists from junior mid Shane Knobloch. Kyle Mullin made 16 saves in the win.

Loyola surged in the polls following season-opening wins over Maryland and Johns Hopkins. The 12-7 win over Maryland was especially impressive considering that the Terrapins didn’t lose a game last season on their way to the national championship.

Last season, Rutgers advanced to the championship weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

Rutgers will play a solid St. John’s program on Tuesday before beginning a tough stretch of schedule that includes Utah (receiving votes), No. 4 Princeton and UMass (receiving votes) before beginning Big Ten play in late-March.

Rutgers men’s lacrosse is focused ahead of a historic weekend for the program

Rutgers men’s lacrosse is set for a historic weekend in the NCAA Tournament

Rutgers men’s lacrosse made history this past weekend, with the program now two wins away from what would be the first team national championship in Scarlet Knights history, regardless of the sport.

On Saturday, Rutgers beat No. 3 UPenn 11-9 to advance to the first final four in program history. Next up is No. 7 Cornell for a spot in the championship game.

Rutgers is 14-3 on the season and reached as high as third overall in the Inside Lacrosse rankings this season. They lost to Maryland, the consensus top team in the nation, in the Big Ten Tournament’s championship game.

The win over UPenn means that the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s semifinals for the first time in program history. The Scarlet Knights had lost their previous seven games in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Shane Knobloch, who scored three goals in keying the win over UPenn, spoke about the significance of this run through the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s definitely special. It’s something that’s obviously never been done before so it’s pretty cool to be a part of it,” Knobloch said on the Big Ten Network.

“And as I said, this senior class definitely deserves it. All the guys deserve it.”

The NCAA Tournament semifinal will take place this Saturday at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.

The winner of the Rutgers v. Cornell game will take on the winner of No. 1 Maryland against No. 5 Princeton.

Maryland (twice) and Princeton (in a non-conference game) are the only two teams to beat the Scarlet Knights this season.

“I mean, it’s the same every week for us; we try to keep it really consistent that’s what our coach really likes us to do so,” Knobloch said on BTN.

“We’ll start the week going over Rutgers and then we’ll start preparing for the team we’re playing. We usually have – we always have a great game plan so we came out on top [against UPenn]. It was good.”

In the fall, Rutgers women’s soccer notched the first Big Ten regular season title in the athletic department’s history. Field hockey took the Big Ten Tournament title, another first for not just the program but the entire athletic department.

Women’s soccer would advance to the final four teams in the NCAA Tournament.

Rutgers entered the Big Ten in 2014.

What’s the future look like for Rutgers men’s lacrosse?

Rutgers men’s lacrosse has a solid 2022 recruiting class to continue to build their program on.

Brian Brecht has turned the Rutgers men’s lacrosse program into a national name, one that is capable of recruiting at a high level and then performing on the big stage.

As they head into a weekend match-up with No. 3 UPenn, Rutgers is currently 14-3 (4-1 Big Ten). A senior-laden team certainly has the ability to make a run in the NCAA Tournament this year, as evidenced by their strong start in the first round this past weekend.

The Scarlet Knights were eighth in the most recent Inside Lacrosse rankings.

But what does the future look like for Rutgers lacrosse? In a conference that features a juggernaut (Maryland) and some traditional blueblood programs in the sport (Johns Hopkins), the Scarlet Knights will continue to need to reload the program.

For the class of 2022, Rutgers came in No. 25 in the nation with a group of incoming freshmen that features four players ranked as four-star recruits and six recruits ranked as three-stars by Inside Lacrosse.

And the 2023 recruiting class, while a bit slow to take off, features two players, both ranked as four-stars.

It is certainly valid to consider where things stand for Rutgers as far as replenishing the talent pool within the program. A number of impactful seniors are ready to graduate, including the attacking trio of Mitch Bartolo (41 goals, 16 assists), Ronan Jacoby (35 goals, 11 asissts) and Brian Cameron (32 goals, 10 assists).

The team has been built successfully the past two years via the transfer portal, and more of the same should be expected this offseason. Brecht has been tremendous in the portal, identifying talent and then seamlessly blending in this talent into his roster.

Long-term, continuing to make inroads in New Jersey would be helpful for Rutgers for sure, especially given the depth and breadth of talent in this area. Three of the 10 recruits in the class of 2022 are from New Jersey. Brecht would likely want that number to be higher if possible.

And while there is certainly a bias built into the state’s lacrosse community towards the traditional ACC powerhouses as well as the Patriot League and understandably the Ivy League, atmospheres such as Sunday will certainly help sell the program.

Before a standing-room-only crowd of 5,212 at Yurcak Field, Sunday’s win over Harvard certainly felt big for the program. Instead of that same crowd rattling around massive SHI Stadium, there was an intense feel to the NCAA Tournament game that the more intimate setting of Yurcak provided.

It is obvious from Sunday’s turnout – and how the team responded – that the lacrosse programs need to get out from SHI Stadium.

That ‘Amen’ you just heard? It came from football head coach Greg Schiano who probably would be in favor of that too.

[lawrence-related id=16045]

But the lacrosse programs need to be treated like the national programs that they are and not second-class citizens. The Yurcak experience underscored that need.

The women’s program has made consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and has been consistently a top 20 team this season. The men are firmly a top 10 program the past two years.

Playing before a packed house on Sunday before a frothy atmosphere looked and felt big-time, something that can only help both the lacrosse programs with recruiting.

Rutgers men’s lacrosse beats Ohio State, advances to Big Ten Championship Game

Rutgers men’s lacrosse beats Ohio State, advances in the Big Ten Tournament.

Rutgers men’s lacrosse won in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night, setting up a Saturday championship game against Maryland.

Rutgers, a second-seed in the Big Ten Tournament, beat Ohio State 12-10 on Thursday night. Down 7-4 after two quarters, Rutgers stormed back in the second half, powered by four goals in each of the third quarter and fourth.

The Scarlet Knights held a decided edge in shots (45:37), shots on goal (33:22). Senior attacker Mitch Bartolo, a transfer from UPenn, led the way with four goals for Rutgers.

The Big Ten Tournament this season is being hosted by Maryland, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and the top-ranked team in the nation.

On Thursday night, Maryland beat Johns Hopkins 16-11.

The Scarlet Knights are now 13-2 this season (4-1 Big Ten). Their lone loss in Big Ten play came at Maryland earlier this season.

The win all but ensures that Rutgers lacrosse will return to the NCAA Tournament. There wasn’t much doubt about this, but beating Ohio State and advancing to the Big Ten title game is the final note in a strong resume for Rutgers this season.

Rutgers came into the Big Ten Tournament ranked No. 4 in the nation in the latest Inside Lacrosse rankings. They are sixth in RPI.

Penn State Men’s Lacrosse defeats No. 17 Johns Hopkins, Tambroni gets 200th career win

Penn State men’s lacrosse head coach Jeff Tambroni scored his 200th career win as the Nittany Lions pulled an upset of No. 17 Johns Hopkins.

It wasn’t pretty for the Nittany Lions, but despite 22 turnovers, the men’s lacrosse team got a much-needed victory over No. 17 Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon. Jeff Tambroni celebrated a little extra today after clinching his 200th career win as head coach.

Penn State goalie Colby Kneese led the way with 15 saves on the day. Kneese has struggled to start the season, but he was a key part of Penn State’s 11-8 win on Sunday.

Penn State attackman Mac O’Keefe had his best outing of the season with four goals and an assist. Late in the first quarter, O’Keefe tied the game at three with this incredible low-to-high shot at the top of the offensive zone.

O’Keefe is closing on unprecedented history for Penn State. Not only is he the all-time goals leader for the University, he’s just seven goals shy of breaking the NCAA Division I record for career goals.

Penn State has struggled to find success in the second-half of games this season and the third quarter felt like it could be deja vu all over again. The Nittany Lions held a 7-4 lead going into the half, just to see that lead evaporate early in the fourth quarter.

The Nittany Lions played like a desperate team and it paid off. Kneese was a major contributor to them staying in the game as he made save after save when it mattered most.

Penn State dominated faceoffs from start to finish. Gerard Arceri and Jake Glatz combined to win 78% (18 out of 23) of the faceoffs against Johns Hopkins. The shots for each team were pretty much even, but due to Penn State’s 22 turnovers, Hopkins got extra possessions making it an even more impressive outing from Kneese.

The Nittany Lions are now 2-4 on the early season and have one of their biggest tests coming up when they face No. 3 Maryland this Saturday. The Terrapins are 6-0 and coming off an impressive 13-9 win over No. 5 Rutgers.
