During Coach Inoke Breckterfield, Garrett Rand and Isaiahh Loudermilk’s media availability today a constant theme brought up was initial impressions of redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz, a guy who is set to start the season under center for the Badgers.

To preface, there is already practice footage released of the freshman and the video supports the comments made today by the Badgers’ defensive line coach and two seniors along the line.

Their main message: Mertz throws a beautiful football and is a special talent at the position.

“He throws a nice ball, he can sling it” Breckterfield mentioned, along with the fact that while Mertz is still working through things he is ready to go.

Loudermilk agreed with his position coach, saying “[Mertz is] a special talent” while also noting that he hasn’t been able to see much as he’s on the defensive line and is usually going after the quarterback.

Mertz and the Badgers open their season 17 days from now when Illinois comes to town. If the comments made by Breckterfield and Loudermilk are any indication, Mertz has more than enough talent and is in a great spot to come in on Day 1 and show why he came to Wisconsin as the highest rated quarterback recruit in program history.

With the season now less than three weeks away the Wisconsin Badgers and the rest of the Big Ten are back in the AP Poll and other weekly rankings.

This week’s edition of the AP Poll has Paul Chryst’s team in at No. 16, three slots above their No. 19 ranking from a week ago.

Much of this movement is due to teams including No. 9 Texas, No. 13 Texas A&M, No. 16 Mississippi State and No. 18 Oklahoma losing their games this weekend.

Most likely not accounted for in the ranking, though, is the news that starting quarterback Jack Coan injured his foot in practice on Saturday and is out indefinitely. How much of the season he’ll be able to play is not yet known, though there it is likely that his absence will have an effect on their next AP ranking.

The Badgers will open their season 20 days from now when the Illinois Fighting Illini come to town, most likely doing so without the services of Coan under center.

BREAKING: Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan injured at practice and is out indefinitely

According to multiple reports Wisconsin senior quarterback Jack Coan injured his foot at practice yesterday and is out indefinitely.

Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the first to break the news, says the senior quarterback will undergo surgery and should miss several weeks, at least through the opening game against Illinios.

Behind Coan on the depth chart is redshirt freshman and former four-star recruit Graham Mertz, redshirt sophomore Chase Wolf and redshirt junior Danny Vanden Boom. None of whom have much college experience.

This news is tough to hear after Head Coach Paul Chryst and senior running back Garrett Groshek both raved about Coan, his leadership and what he means to the team just this past week.

Though the timeline of Coan’s injury is unknown, his absence will have a significant effect on the team and its quest towards their first Big Ten title since 2012.

Earlier today Wisconsin running backs Garrett Groshek and Nakia Watson met with the media and discussed the upcoming season.

The two are currently set to lead the Badgers’ running back rotation with Isaac Guerendo also in the mix and true freshman Jalen Berger still learning the college game.

Both had a lot to say about the team’s running back rotation, Jonathan Taylor’s impact, Jack Coan, what this unique preseason is like and much more.

Here are quotes that stuck out from the press conference (for more visit the thread below):

Groshek on Coan and his leadership:

  • “Jack’s come a long way. Football IQ off the charts…He’s stepped up as a leader, a lot of it came from the respect from the way he was playing…He’s always so consistent and brings the same juice every day.”

Paul Chryst applauded Coan’s leadership in his press conference yesterday. This team and those close to it have a lot of good things to say about the senior quarterback.

Groshek on the unique preseason:

  • “Biggest difference is having to do school…Other than that it’s just a condensed version…We don’t really have any days to waste.”

Chryst also spoke about school playing a factor yesterday. Given the team’s experience they are well-equipped to deal with the challenging structure and time frame.

Groshek on how the running back rotation can succeed and on playing with Watson:

  • On what it takes to succeed: “First and foremost taking care of the ball…We’re all going to be ready and feed off each other. I think we compliment each other well.”
  • On Watson: “Different people see things different ways and our styles are a little different. Being able to master different things helps us out. I think we compliment each other.”

Groshek on Guerendo and his talent:

  • “First thing you see is the speed…He’s come a long way in terms of learning how to play running back…I think he’s starting to be comfortable.”

Groshek on the offensive line:

  • “We’ve got more experience than people give us credit for…Then we have some younger centers that got to sit behind Tyler [Biadasz] for the last 3 years and learn from him…We feel really about good about our offensive line and the unit they can be.”

Watson on Taylor’s impact:

  • “I watched both JT and Groshek, witnessed greatness from both of them and learned a lot…JT’s always told me to make your decision and go. If you make a mistake make sure it’s at 100 percent.”

Watson also had a lot to say overall about Groshek and his impressive football IQ.

Watson on Wisconsin as “RB-U” and the new cast this season:

  • “We know what we have to do. We know we have big shoes to fill…We need to be Nakia, be Groshek, be Isaac. We need to play the football that got us here.”

Watson on four-star freshman Jalen Berger:

  • He’s a very quiet guy. He’s very athletic, fast…He can definitely be a great back once he learns the plays and gets in sync with everyone. I think he can be a great asset to the team.”

Watson on playing Illinois Week 1 (the quote of the day):

  • “Illinois deserves a butt whooping after last year.”

After padded practices began yesterday Wisconsin running backs Garrett Groshek and Nakia Watson meet with the media today and discussed the upcoming season.

I’ll publish notes from the press conference later today, but one quote stuck out that was impossible to pass over.

That quote came when Watson was asked about what it meant to go right into Big Ten play and face Illinois Week 1, a team that beat the Badgers last season.

Watson’s response: “We do like that. Illinois definitely deserves a butt whooping from last year.”

You wanted preseason hype and trash talk? You got it.

That quote now gets to marinate for 23 days until the Fighting Illini come to Madison to open their 2020 season.

Check back into BadgersWire later today for full notes from the press conference.

Wisconsin announces plan for attendance at football games this fall

The Wisconsin Badgers will kick off their 2020 football season on October 24 against the Illinois Fighting Illini with at least some fans in attendance.

The fans, though, won’t be the student section we’re used to and 80,000 people packed into the bleachers. As reported by the Wisconsin State Journal, the program will only allow family members of players and staff members at the games, amounting to approximately 1,000 people watching live.

You can look at SEC and Big 12 schools and their 15,000-plus fans watching the games and notice a significant difference in the product. This decision, though, wasn’t up to the Big Ten schools and states in which they play, but instead was made by the conference after it reinstated the season in mid-September.

Campus planning director Gary Brown mentioned that neighboring parking lots will be closed and city spokesperson Shiva Bidar noted that city bars will be able to open their outside areas but with strict restrictions.

Bidar also mentioned house parties as an issue to monitor when the season begins.

There will be no jumping around at Camp Randall this season or an a cappella rendition of Build Me Up Buttercup. The Badgers are playing football, though, after an entire month of it seeming impossible.
