REPORT: Big Ten considering 10-game conference schedule

A recent report states that the Big Ten Conference will be expanding the number of league games per season.

A recent report states the Big Ten Conference is considering expanding the number of league games per season. Our colleagues at Spartans Wire reported the Big Ten will “most likely be moving to 10 conference games with the additions of the Ducks and Huskies.”

It’s unknown when this change would occur if it does happen.

If the Big Ten does actually expand to 10 games — which is still not certain — then it’ll be interesting to see if that’ll occur in 2024 when USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington join the league or further down the road.

When considering the size of the conference starting in 2024, it would make a great deal of sense for the conference to expand its league schedule. We’ll have more on this story as this develops.

Big Ten History: A long list of Heisman Trophy winners come from Oregon’s new conference

It’s time for Oregon fans to learn a bit more about their new conference. Today, let’s look at all of the Heisman winners to come from the Big Ten.

The first Heisman Trophy was handed out in 1935 and for the first four years, the trophy went to places such as Yale and Chicago. But beginning in 1939 with an Iowa running back, the Big Ten Conference has dominated college football’s most prestigious award.

As the Oregon Ducks get ready to compete in the Big Ten beginning in 2024, we wanted to see just how dominating the conference is in securing the Heisman. It’s an impressive list with Ohio State and Michigan grabbing the most Heismans, as expected. The Buckeyes’ Archie Griffin is the only player to be awarded the Heisman twice, but USC’s Caleb Williams is looking to join that club.

We’ve listed every Big Ten Heisman winner and included those from USC, UCLA and Oregon.

Winners and losers from the latest conference realignment cycle

We broke down the biggest winners and losers from the latest round of conference realignment

Despite fall camp being underway around the country, conference realignment has dominated the headlines over the past several days. As teams prepare for the 2023 college football, the landscape of college athletics has been tremendously reshaped.

The Pac-12 as we know it is seemingly gone forever thanks to the conference’s inability to secure a lucrative TV deal.

Colorado was the first to jump ship and return to the Big 12, but it did not take long for other schools in the Pac-12 to follow suit and make their exits. Since the Buffs’ departure, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah have all agreed to join other conferences after this year,

Now that the dust has settled, at least for now, let’s take a look at some of the winners and losers from this cycle of conference realignment.

Ranking 2024 Big Ten stadiums by capacity

The Big Ten Conference has some of the best stadiums in college football.

The Big Ten Conference has some of the best stadiums in college football. Things are only going to get better starting in 2024 with the additions of Oregon, USC, UCLA, and Washington.

All four of these teams play in stadiums that will immediately make a mark among their Big Ten peers. Some interesting trivia on Big Ten stadiums, Husky Stadium will be the oldest Big Ten facility, having opened in 1920.

Minnesota has the newest building in the conference in Huntington Bank Stadium, which was built in 2009.  The second newest building is Memorial Stadium in Indiana which opened in 1960.

Since 2000, where does Oregon stand among the best of the best in Big Ten Conference?

Since the year 2000, few teams in the Big Ten have been as good as the Ducks when it comes to the AP rankings.

There is a prominent belief in the world of college football that when it comes to the best conferences in the nation, the Big Ten stands among the best of the best.

Obviously, it is impossible to dethrone the SEC when it comes to accolades. Since 2000, 14 of the 22 national champions in college football have come from the South Eastern Conference, including six of the last eight. The Big Ten has a pair of championships under its belt in that time period, though, and schools from that conference are routinely near the top of the rankings and in contention every single season.

There should be no confusion about why the Oregon Ducks wanted to jump from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten in the latest round of conference realignment, where they will now be aligned with some of the best teams in the nation, including Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Iowa, among others.

But when you look at that history over the past couple of decades, where do the Ducks stand when it comes to national prominence? To answer that question, we looked at howmany times each team in the conference — newly expanded to 18 teams with the additions of the USC Trojans, Washington Huskies, and UCLA Bruins — found themselves ranked inside the AP Top 10.

Here’s where Oregon stacks up:

Washington president discusses how Pac-12 deals fell apart, why UW went to Big Ten

UW’s move to the #B1G was followed by revealing remarks from president Ana Mari Cauce on the #Pac12’s woefully bad media deal.

University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce spoke publicly on Saturday in the wake of her school’s move to the Big Ten Conference. She gave the public what it wanted: details on the inside process connected to the Pac-12’s failure to land a media rights deal.

“In the end, we did not have a deal which was viable in terms of securing our stability and our future. … It was not the deal we had been discussing just days before,” Cauce said.

Cauce also said she and the other Pac-12 schools received one deal, not multiple deals, which was a reference to an Apple TV deal being the only proposal advanced by George Kliavkoff.

Translated: There was a digital (streaming) deal but zero presence on linear TV, meaning ESPN, Turner (TBS/TNT), CW, CBS, NBC, ABC or other primary TV outlets.

Cauce also noted the presence of an opt-out clause after two years as a highly alarming aspect of the Apple proposal, something that did not guarantee stability or inspire confidence.

Reactions flowed in after Washington made its move to the Big Ten, but the big story attached to UW’s exit is just how limited and inadequate the Pac-12 media rights deal was.

Here’s the reaction to UW’s move, plus Cauce’s comments and some weekend reporting as you scroll down:

Getting to know the Big Ten mascots: Who are these guys?

The Duck is about to make some new friends as Oregon leaves the Pac-12 to join the Big Ten next season.

No matter what conference Oregon finds itself in, we know The Duck is the best mascot around and there can’t be much of a debate there. But as the Ducks do move to the Big Ten, The Duck is going to be going to a brand new school, so to speak, surrounded by strangers he can only hope to be his friend someday as he gets used to his new surroundings.

The Duck will need to bid farewell to Ralphie in Colorado and Butch the Cougar up in the Palouse, as well as Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat in Arizona. We still don’t know where Benny Beaver will end up, but he’ll still be around during rivalry games.

As far as Oregon goes, though, the Big Ten will bring on new faces and new places to see. These are the new mascots The Duck and Harry the Husky will have to become acquainted with next season.
