Nebraska AD says more conference expansion on the horizon

Nebraska’s athletic director is sounding the alarm on the future of conference expansion in college athletics.

Nebraska’s athletic director is sounding the alarm on the future of conference expansion in college athletics. Trev Alberts told Amie Just of the Lincoln Journal Star that he doesn’t believe realignment is anywhere close to being finished.

“History is unkind to conferences that have not had the courage to expand. I don’t believe it’s done. It’s never been done. It’s more likely than not that there will be continued periods of angst. I believe that the next go-around – that’s my basic conclusion – will be far more disruptive than anything we’re currently engaged in. We need to prepare ourselves mentally for that.”

The Big Ten will be adding USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington in 2024. Oklahoma and Texas will be headed to the SEC.

The next domino will be what happens to the remaining Pac-12 teams. Those squads are Oregon State, Washington State, California and Stanford.

Social media reacts to Oregon and Washington joining the Big Ten

The Big Ten will be expanding in 2024.

The Big Ten will be expanding in 2024. The conference was already adding USC and UCLA for next season but they won’t be the only new entries. They will now be joined by the University of Oregon and the University of Washington.

The University of Nebraska President Ted Carter, Chancellor Dr. Rodney Bennett, and Director of Athletics Trev Alberts issued a joint statement regarding the news on Friday afternoon.

“Today marks an exciting moment in history for the Big Ten Conference and the University of Nebraska. The landscape of college athletics continues to quickly evolve and adding Oregon and Washington further establishes the Big Ten as the preeminent conference in the country.

These are two great institutions with highly recognizable brands that expands the Conference footprint to the Pacific Northwest. Nebraska has a large alumni base on the West Coast and the new additions will allow our fans in another region of the country to watch the Huskers compete on a more regular basis.

Adding two highly respected universities to the Big Ten will also create exciting new opportunities for our faculty, staff and students to partner with world-class colleagues in research and academics. We welcome Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten Conference and look forward to competing and collaborating with them in the future.”

Report: Big Ten has ‘little to no interest’ in expanding conference

The Big Ten is reportedly expressing “little to no interest” in conference expansion

The Big Ten isn’t looking to expand at this time, according to Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports.

Conference expansion and realignment has been a huge topic in the past week, with Texas and Oklahoma expected to leave the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference. This move has sparked a bunch of chatter on what other moves could occur — including numerous teams expressing interest in the joining the Big Ten. However, that is reportedly something the league isn’t interested in at this time.

Wetzel tweeted on Monday night that he’s hearing “little to no interest in expansion” from his Big Ten sources. He added that the league is in talks with the Pac 12 on a potential non-conference rotating schedule agreement.

Here’s the full tweet from Wetzel below:

Wetzel also debunked the wild rumor that Ohio State and Michigan were in “serious contact” with the SEC on joining the conference. That was something I personally was always skeptical about — but it was at least an interesting rumor.

We will have to wait and see if things change from what Wetzel is hearing, and if the league does in fact look to add a few teams. I wouldn’t be shocked either way at this point.

Report: Oklahoma State actively expressing interest in joining Big Ten

There are reports that Oklahoma State has expressed interest in becoming a new member of the Big Ten

It appears the Big Ten will have plenty of options should the league want to expand its geographical footprint and add some new members.

On Friday, it was reported that both Kansas and Iowa State have reached out to the league to inquire about joining the conference. Now, there are reports that Oklahoma State has also expressed interest in becoming a new member of the Big Ten.

Dylan Buckingham of KFOR in Oklahoma City is reporting that the Cowboys are being “very proactive about their next conference move” which includes starting a dialogue with the Big Ten. He noted that talks are simply exploratory at this time and that the Big Ten is just one possibility for Oklahoma State.

Here are a pair of tweets from Buckingham on the possibility of Oklahoma State joining the Big Ten:

Behind Texas and Oklahoma — who appear certain to be joining the SEC — the Cowboys would be the next best football program from the Big 12. So, in my mind, this would be a nice move for the Big Ten to add another consistently quality program. However, it appears it is still early in the process so we will have to wait and see if anything comes from this.

Latest conference realignment rumor states SEC in ‘serious contact’ with UM, OSU

Could you picture a Big Ten that doesn’t include Michigan and Ohio State? That is apparently a possibility if you believe this latest rumor on conference realignment.

[mm-video type=video id=01fbdpn5dp9f0zyhffx1 playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fbdpn5dp9f0zyhffx1/01fbdpn5dp9f0zyhffx1-b47747bd71af82396ae7b35bcac806d0.jpg]

Could you picture a Big Ten that doesn’t include Michigan and Ohio State? That is apparently a possibility if you believe this latest rumor on conference realignment.

Jack McGuire — who writes for Barstool Sports and is a producer on the popular Unnecessary Roughness college football podcast — is reporting that the Southeastern Conference is in “serious contact” with Michigan and Ohio State about joining the league. He added that he is unaware of whether or not this could actually happen but that there is at least interest from the SEC to poach two of the Big Ten’s biggest programs.

McGuire’s tweet above was met with plenty of skeptism — including from myself — but right now it seems like anything and everything is possible in conference realignment. I couldn’t imagine the Big Ten letting both the Buckeyes and Wolverines leave the league, but you never know and this will be something to potentially monitor in the coming weeks.
