The Big Ten has already canceled the men’s basketball tournament, and now it has made the tough decision to cancel all athletic events through the entire current academic year.

This goes a step further than what other schools have done on their own. Some have gone through the end of March as a starting point, but the end of the academic year would stretch far into May for all schools in the conference. By all athletic events, that means everything. It even involves championships and postseason events that could stretch beyond the academic year like softball and baseball.

There will also be significant limits put on recruiting events and gatherings until further notice as well.

Here is the complete release from the Big Ten that was released on Thursday.

The Big Ten Conference announced today that in addition to the Men’s Basketball Tournament it will be canceling all conference and non-conference competitions through the end of the academic year, including spring sports that compete beyond the academic year, and participation in all NCAA tournaments and competitions. In addition, the Conference has announced a moratorium on all on- and off-campus recruiting activities for the foreseeable future.

The Big Ten Conference will use this time to work with the appropriate medical experts and institutional leadership to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main priority of the Big Ten Conference continues to be the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all developing and relevant information on the COVID-19 virus.

Ohio State basketball with fifth best odds to win Big Ten Tournament according to BetMGM

The Ohio State basketball team has the fifth-best odds to win the Big Ten Tournament according to the online betting site BetMGM.

The regular season is over for the Big Ten basketball team, and it was quite the roller coaster. Things started out great with a 9-0 start, hit a major skid in January, then rebounded in February and beyond by winning nine of its last twelve.

The slide at the turn of the year was enough to knock the Buckeyes out of the regular-season Big Ten title race, but they rebounded enough to be solidly in the NCAA Tournament field.

But first things first — there’s the Big Ten Tournament to try and make some noise in. Ohio State received a No. 7 seed because of tiebreakers and will take on No. 11 seed Purdue Thursday. It should be a whale of a tournament with more than a handful of teams capable of cutting down the nets in Indy — OSU among them.

According to the online betting site BetMGM, Ohio State is tied with Iowa and Penn State as having the fifth-best odds to win the tourney at +800. So who does it favor? You can probably guess the answer to that. Michigan State with its late-season surge is tied with Maryland as the betting favorite at  +350, followed by Wisconsin (+400), and Michigan (+600).

We’ll get to see how it all plays out from Wednesday through Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.

Big Ten tournaments to be held as scheduled amid concerns over novel Coronavirus

As of now the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament and other conference championships will continue on as scheduled.

The Big Ten Tournament will go on as scheduled.

The Big Ten has announced that, as of now, conference tournaments and championships will proceed as planned amid concerns over COVID-19, more commonly referred to as the Coronavirus.

In a statement the conference announced, “The Big Ten Conference’s main priority is to ensure the safety of our students, coaches, administrators, event staff and fans as we continue to monitor all relevant information on the COVID-19 virus and its impact on hosting events in public spaces.

“At this time all Conference championships/tournaments will continue to be held as scheduled, and we will continue to consult with local and state public health departments, host facilities and the NCAA leading up to and during these events to implement best practices and provide the most current information.”

The Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament is planned to be held in Indianapolis from March 11-15. The Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament started Wednesday, March 4 in Indianapolis and wraps up on Sunday the 8th.

Concern over the spread of COVID-19 has caused the cancelation of a number of large-scale events, including film and media festival South by Southwest in the United States. The NCAA Division III tournament is currently being played without fans at Johns Hopkins University and Stanford has limited the number of fans that can attend sporting events. In Italy fans have been completely banned from attending sporting events due to the spread of the disease.

The NHL has closed the dressing rooms to media members and other major sports are expected follow suit.

The Big Ten Network has announced their basketball studio crew will not be in attendance at the conference championships.

This is of course an evolving situation and we will have more updates from he conference when available.
