Our latest BadgersWire Big Ten basketball power rankings

After another packed week of Big Ten hoops, there is a new number one team in the latest BadgersWire power rankings.

After Wisconsin climbed all the way from the middle of the pack towards the top spot, the Badgers were beaten at home by Michigan State this past Friday.

A number of Big Ten results were surprising this past week, as Illinois lost by double-digits at Maryland, Purdue fell at Indiana, and Michigan stormed past Indiana on Sunday.

The Big Ten currently has no NCAA Tournament No. 1 seeds projected by either ESPN or CBS, but seven conference teams are slotted to be in the tournament by both outlets.

It’s crazy how much things can change from one week to the next when it comes to Big Ten basketball.

Last week, Michigan State was at its lowest point following a home loss to Northwestern. However, today the Spartans are at their highest mark after an impressive double-digit victory over Wisconsin.

So where do the Spartans land in our updated batch of power rankings? Let’s take a look at where we have Michigan State and the rest of the Big Ten teams in our updated weekly power rankings:

It wasn’t a great week of basketball for Michigan State.

The Spartans’ nine-game winning streak was snapped this weekend in a disappointing home loss to Northwestern. Earlier in the week, Michigan State also needed late-game heroics to survive Minnesota’s upset bid. So it’s safe to say it wasn’t a great week for Michigan State.

With things not going as many Spartans’ fans thought they would, how far will Michigan State drop in our weekly power rankings? Let’s take a look at where we have the Spartans and the rest of the Big Ten teams in our updated weekly power rankings:

A complete slate of conference play this week resulted in quite a bit of shakeup in our weekly power rankings — especially at the top of the league.

For the first time this season, Purdue is not the top team in the league and we have a new No. 1 squad. Who is replacing the Boilermakers as our top Big Ten team this week?

Michigan State continues to remain one of the top teams in the Big Ten in our latest batch of power rankings.

There wasn’t a ton of action this past week, but Michigan State did pick up a pair of wins — including a road conference win over Northwestern. Those two wins keep the Spartans near the top of our power rankings.

It was a quiet week for the Big Ten, but there were still a handful of games that resulted in some slight shifts in our weekly power rankings.

A number of teams — including the Spartans — didn’t play this past week due to finals or COVID-related cancelations. So with there being a lack of games, there will be a lack of notable changes in the newest batch of power rankings.

It’s the time of the year where we can for the most part turn all of our focus from the gridiron to the hardwood. So it’s only fitting we get started with a new weekly batch of Big Ten basketball power rankings.

Throughout the fall, Spartans Wire would release a weekly football power rankings poll of the Big Ten teams. Now that we are onto the bowl season, we are shifting to a similar weekly power rankings poll for men’s basketball.

Let’s take a look at where we have the Spartans and the rest of the Big Ten teams in our initial power rankings:

Preseason 2021-22 Big Ten basketball power rankings

Get ready for Big Ten basketball season with power rankings and a primer on each squad:

It’s been a long, long wait for college basketball to return to normalcy, but Tuesday will mark the first time since March of 2020 that fans will be back in full for the regular season.

The Big Ten conference once again features contenders, a number of NCAA Tournament likelihoods, and a plethora of squads who will find themselves praying their bubble doesn’t pop down the stretch.

Purdue and Michigan have headlined the preseason talk, and it’s for good reason. Matt Painter has arguably the deepest team he has ever had as head coach of the Boilermakers, as All-Big Ten performer Trevion Williams returns alongside rising sophomore guard Jaden Ivey and a number of rotation pieces.

Michigan gets an All-Big Ten performer of their own back in sophomore center Hunter Dickinson, while a group of sensational freshman headlined by five-star wing Caleb Houstan will look to lead the Wolverines to the Final Four.

The Big Ten could see double-digit NCAA tournament berths in a conference with depth of talent that rivals any in the country. How are things expected to stack up heading into the year? Here are our BadgersWire preseason Big Ten basketball rankings:

Big Ten basketball Power Rankings, mid-February

The Big Ten is arguably the deepest and most talented conference in college basketball. We take stock of which teams are playing the best.

The Big Ten might be the deepest and most talented basketball league in the country. Three of the top five ranked teams in both the AP and Ferris Mowers poll are out of the conference, with plenty more hanging around inside and just outside of the top 25 to 40 teams in the nation.

Because of that, every game is a challenge for all fourteen teams with the status and power of the league seemingly changing from week to week. We’re doing our best to try and keep up.

Now that we are in the home stretch of the regular season, it feels like a good time to take stock in where teams stand in the league with which is playing best as things wind down.

Here’s a look at the Big Ten basketball power rankings for the week ending February 14.
