The Rhode Island Scumbag’s guide to betting the 2023 Big East men’s basketball tournament

The Rhode Island Scumbag drops his picks for the local conference — including a live dog in St. John’s and one team to fade, fade, fade.

The Rhode Island Scumbag is our resident prognosticator who thoroughly cleaned up last year’s postseason basketball slate as a bettor. As such, he’s back to take us through both a select group of conference tournaments as well as the big dance itself. He chooses to remain anonymous (for now) for reasons unknown, though they may be related to the fact “Rhode Island Scumbag — 2021 to present” isn’t a particularly appealing resume item. All text below are his words.

Why am I choosing to break down a conference that absolutely took me to the cleaners this year? I guess because while I sweated out many losing tickets on Big East games, I did end up putting a lot of hours into watching Big East Basketball.

It was a very tough regular season to handicap if I’m being honest. Marquette won the regular season without much of a fight, but no team was really fully healthy for the full season and the standings didn’t fluctuate all that much. I do have some betting angles that I’ll break down here based on what I watched throughout the year.

DePaul upset Seton Hall on a stunning buzzer-beating block in Big East tournament

Seton Hall is going home and the refs got the call right

It’s hard to know which is the bigger upset in the men’s Big East tournament on Wednesday night.

No. 10 seed DePaul shocking No. 7 Seton Hall (-5.5) or a referee crew making the correct, game-deciding call as time expired in Madison Square Garden.

The Blue Demons (3-17 in the Big East this year) picked up their fifth ever victory in the conference tournament with a 66-65 win that ended with DePaul’s Nick Ongenda sprinting to the hoop from halfcourt to make a game-winning block on Femi Odukale.

Officials initially signaled for goaltending on the play —a wild moment in itself — but the refs reversed the call following very quick review. And it was absolutely the right move since the ball was still on its way up and not over the cylinder.

But how the game got to this point is just as dramatic.

DePaul had numerous chances to tie or take the lead with less than a minute remaining and couldn’t capitalize on any of them.

The very next play after the jump ball:

Seton Hall would hit two free throws after the foul to extend the lead to four only for DePaul to hit a layup with six seconds remaining right after.

That’s when it all fell apart for the Pirates.

Jalen Terry stole the ball from Odukale and was fouled shooting a three-pointer with four seconds left. He hit all three shots from the foul line to set up Ongenda’s block.

“I knew it was a block,” Ongenda told the FS1 broadcast. “I knew it. That’s what I do. I block everything.”

He’s not joking. The senior finished with four rejections on the night. None bigger than the play he made as time expired. Legendary broadcaster Bill Raftery was on the call and said he’d never seen a game end like this one.

Only in March.

Legendary coach Jim Boeheim done at Syracuse after 47 seasons

Another coaching legend is out the door.

Jim Boeheim, the second-winningest coach in Division I basketball history, has coached his last game for Syracuse. Only a few hours after the Orange were eliminated by Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament, the university announced that Boeheim’s 47th season at the helm was his final one. He will be succeeded by Orange assistant Adrian Autry, who played for Boeheim from 1990 to 1994.

Notre Dame’s first game against Boeheim’s Orange was a 65-62 loss Feb. 9, 1985 at Purcell Pavilion. Most recently, the Orange had a come-from-behind 78-73 victory Jan. 14 in Syracuse. Overall, the Irish went 16-31 in the rivalry during that time. The programs have battled every year as conference rivals since 1996 first in the Big East with the Irish losing two of three meetings in that conference’s tournament, and then, in the ACC.

Fighting Irish Wire was lucky to be in South Bend for what turned out to be Boeheim’s final trip there. After his team’s 62-61 victory, we were able to sit in on his postgame news conference. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to snap a photo of the Hall of Famer, which is what you’re seeing at the top of this story.

Much like [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag], who coached his own final game for an ACC program he has become synonymous with less than 24 hours earlier, Boeheim will be missed, and we wish him well.

Odds and picks for each of the Power 6 men’s basketball conference tournaments

Our staff picks for the men’s basketball Power 6 conference tournaments.

The NCAA men’s basketball conference tournament schedule is well under way, and the first of the “Big 6” conferences join the action Tuesday when the ACC tips things off.

The Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC join them Wednesday and games continue through the week until champions and automatic NCAA tournament bids are decided over the weekend.

Whether it’s Alabama, Kansas, UCLA or Purdue, we all feel like we have a grasp on the favorites this year. But they don’t call it March Madness for nothing, so the FTW staff made picks on which teams we’d put our money on.

Georgetown vs Seton Hall Game Preview, Big East Tournament

Why Georgetown Will Win

The Hoyas get to turn it loose with nothing to lose.

It’s a lost season with a brutal 20-game losing streak since mid-December, but everything starts now. The season can be made by screwing up Seton Hall, and it almost did that a few days ago.

The Pirates won the last meeting 73-68, but the Georgetown defense allowed just 4-of-20 from three and the offense was decent at getting to the line – that’s what it does.

It would be nice if the Hoyas were better from three and could come up with more defensive stops in meaningful moments, but they make free throws. They’ve taken 94 over the last four games, but …

Why Seton Hall Will Win

Georgetown can’t stop anyone from the field.

Seton Hall didn’t shoot well in either game against the Hoyas and still managed to win both of them.

The D allows 78 points per game with everyone able to get easy shots – the Hoyas get hit for 46% from the field.

No, Seton Hall hasn’t been great in the two games, but it’s on a five-game winning streak, it’s learned to push through in close games, and it’s able to overcome its problems with lots of rebounds and plenty of big defensive stops and takeaways.

In this, it’ll be about …

The rebounds.

Seton Hall is +22 in rebounding margin in the two games against the Hoyas, and that’s not about to stop.

Georgetown will come out hot and get everyone all excited, and then Seton Hall will wake up and start hitting its shots. One big run in the second half will put the game away, helped by a whole lot of offensive rebounds.

DePaul vs St. John’s Game Preview, Big East Tournament

Why DePaul Will Win

The Blue Demons haven’t been bad over the last few weeks, and that includes a win over St. John’s.

It’s too late to get into the NCAA Tournament without a Big East championship, but they’re scoring in bunches, the shooting has been great, and it’s all started with lots and lots of big plays from the defense.

St. John’s might come up with steals, but it gives up way too many points, DePaul is scoring from three, on the free throw line, and on the move as it’s all working, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why St. John’s Will Win

St. John’s is about to crank up the offense even more in New York.

It’s not like it didn’t play well in the loss to DePaul – it scored 94 points – but DePaul was on.

This is the Big East’s best scoring attack, and like DePaul lately, a lot of this comes from generating steals and takeaways. This is a high risk, high reward team that can’t stop anyone in a half court battle, but …

DePaul vs St. John’s: What’s Going To Happen

You want to get into another high-scoring firefight, DePaul? Let’s go.

St. John’s might have lost in Chicago a few weeks ago, but it won 89-84 at home in early January when it went off from three.

If you like killer defenses, this isn’t for you, but enjoy a whole ton of threes and a whole lot of momentum swings before the Red Storm finally pull away.
