MUST WATCH – Chase Claypool’s 84 yard touchdown reception

Two weeks into his NFL career Chase Claypool continue to turn heads for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Quick – who is responsible for the longest play so far in this young NFL season?

If you guessed former Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool then you win the toaster oven!

Leading the Broncos 7-3 just past midway through the second quarter or Sunday’s game, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked to his left to find the rookie Claypool roughly 40 yards down field and Claypool pulled in the catch before letting his legs do the rest.

It’s only been two weeks but already Claypool has two ridiculous highlights in his NFL career after his first reception was one of the best catches you’ll see all season.

The touchdown gave the Steelers a 14-3 lead over Denver and as of posting, Pittsburgh leads Denver 17-3 at halftime.

VIDEO: First glimpse of Ben Roethlisberger throwing at training camp

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw some passes at training camp on Monday.

The footage that Steelers fans have been longing to set their eyes on since Week 2 of the 2019 season is here. Ben Roethlisberger began throwing at training camp on Monday, and as the Steelers said, “It’s a beautiful sight to see!” Indeed.

Expectations for Big Ben are high this season as the offense fell apart without him last year. Under Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges, the Steelers struggled mightily, finishing 31st in passing yards.

“Normalcy now becomes Ben Roethlisberger back in the huddle,” said Steelers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner last week on a conference call with reporters.

“What Ben brings to the table is so unique,” he said. “The experience he has in the red zone, which we so sorely missed last year, obviously, with the young quarterbacks. He has so many in-helmet perspectives. You’re not going to fool him. He’s going to throw a touchdown where you say, ‘Wow.’

As Steelers fans and Big Ben backers, we’ll be holding our breath as Roethlisberger drops back to sling that first pass Monday, Sept. 14 versus the New York Giants.

History of QBs returning from injury favors comeback for Ben Roethlisberger

The past sets the Steelers Ben Roethlisberger up for a big 2020 season.

If the returns of veteran quarterbacks post-injury are any indication, Ben Roethlisberger could be looking at a comeback season in 2020.

The last two quarterbacks to miss 10 or more games at age 35 and over have posted 13 wins in the season following their absence.

  • Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts)
    2011 – neck
    2012 record – 13-3
  • Caron Palmer (Arizona Cardinals)
    2014 – knee, shoulder
    2015 record – 13-3

Despite Roethlisberger’s injury history, 2019 was the first season in his 16-year career that he had missed more than five games.

It’s anybody’s guess how aggressive the Steelers will be with the passing attack this year. In his last complete season, Big Ben averaged a career-high 40 throws per game. He ended 2018 with 675 attempts and 452 completions.

Ben Roethlisberger’s 2019 stats

Roethlisberger played just six total quarters during the 2019 season, failing to throw a single touchdown. He completed just 56.5% of his passes against the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks before needing surgery on his elbow.

It is worth noting Roethlisberger threw for a league-high 5,129 yards with 34 touchdowns during the 2018 season in which he played a full 16 games.

Is Ben Roethlisberger worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

Sitting as a 66-1 underdog to win the award, it’s hard not to see the value in betting on Roethlisberger this season. The Steelers win total is set at 9 on BetMGM, which means many believe Pittsburgh will be right in the playoff hunt in 2020.

If Roethlisberger can come close to matching the stats he posted in 2018, he will certainly get some MVP consideration if the Stee;ers return to the postseason. If the Steelers are even close to being contenders in the AFC this season with Roethlisberger back in the fold, it’s not hard to see that happening, either, especially if he leads his team to an AFC North crown.

Considering the odds, take Roethlisberger to win the MVP award as a fun long shot pick. There is certainly the chance that at 38-years old, he doesn’t have the arm strength to play at an MVP level, but a year off might be good for the veteran quarterback as he will step into a fantastic situation built for him to succeed. Roethlisberger may be the best long-shot bet on the board right now ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft.
