Everything Steve Sarkisian said on Thursday ahead of Big 12 Championship Game

Sark spoke to the media ahead of the biggest game of the year for Texas.

On Thursday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke with the media during his weekly Zoom meeting ahead of the Big 12 Championship Game.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns will be playing in their first Big 12 Championship game since 2018, in which they lost to the Oklahoma Sooners with a chance to spoil their College Football Playoff hopes.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys will attempt to play spoiler on Saturday, but Texas can bolster their College Football Playoff hopes with a 12-1 record and a chance for selection by the committee.

To contend for a CFP spot, the Longhorns must win on Saturday and receive assistance from other teams in their conference championship games.

The easiest one and most likely will be Louisville defeating Florida State, and if that happens, Texas will have a good shot at making the College Football Playoff.

But firstly and most importantly, Texas must win on Saturday. Here is everything Steve Sarkisian said to the media ahead of the championship game.

Officials botch TCU’s overtime goal-line stand twice in Big 12 championship

The Kansas State Wildcats beat the TCU Horned Frogs in the Big 12 championship game, but they had unfortunate help from the refs.

First, let’s give full marks to the Kansas State Wildcats for their thrilling, gutsy 31-28 overtime win over the TCU Horned Frogs in the Big 12 Championship game.

Now, let’s get to the officials in this game, who struggled throughout, and never more so than on TCU’s goal-line stand, which really started when TCU quarterback Max Duggan ran five yards inside the Kansas State one-yard line. Duggan’s elbow hit the turf just before he was able to get the ball in the end zone, but the officials spotted the ball at the one-yard line after the play was over. After a lengthy review, the officials spotted the ball a few inches forward, but not where Duggan’s elbow landed.

As it turned out, those inches would matter… a lot.

On the next play, which PFF also shows here, running back Kendre Miller certainly appeared to get the ball over the goal line while maintaining control. This would have put TCU up and forced Kansas State to respond with a touchdown instead of a field goal, so it was a pretty important moment.

But the officials never appeared to review it, and simply moved on to the next play. Which saw Miller fall short of the goal line — this time legitimately — and Kansas State got the ball at the TCU 25-yard line. Six plays into their sequence, Kansas State was propelled to the conference championship by Ty Zentner’s 31-yard field goal.

That’s two missed calls in a row in the most important part of the game until then. Again, full marks to Kansas State for the win, but you can bet that people will be talking as much about the refs as anything else, which is always a shame.  We don’t yet know how the results of this game will affect TCU’s place in the final four, but it shouldn’t have come to this.

Kansas State’s Deuce Vaughn makes TCU player look foolish on TD run

Deuce Vaughn was shifty and fooled a TCU defender on a TD run

Kansas State is giving TCU fits in Saturday’s Big 12 Championship Game.

The Horned Frogs already had the lead in the fourth quarter when they picked off Max Duggan in the end zone.

That set up an 80-yard drive and the Wildcats’ Deuce Vaughn finished it with a flourish, making a Horned Frog defender look silly en route to the goal line.

The run was good for 44 yards and gave TCU a 28-17 lead after the PAT.

Lincoln Riley and Garrett Riley begin the most extraordinary week of their lives

Two brothers. Two play-callers. Two coaches with teams 1 win from the playoff. Lincoln and Garrett Riley prepare for a week unlike any other. #USC #TCU

Imagine being Lincoln or Garrett Riley this week. Imagine being Marilyn or Mike Riley, the parents of two sons who are squarely in the middle of the College Football Playoff drama for the 2022 season as it enters its final, fateful weekend.

Garrett Riley’s TCU Horned Frogs are No. 3. Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans are No. 4. Both the Frogs and Trojans are one win away from the playoff. They have both come so far in such a short period of time at their current schools, and yet one loss this coming weekend could take it all away.

Two brothers embark on one of the most amazing, thrilling journeys of their lives. Let’s explore the nuances and plot points attached to this incredible story within the Riley family:

Where Texas stands among Big 12 championship contenders

Looking at the five conference contenders most likely to make the Big 12 championship game.

The Big 12 championship picture got clearer on Thursday night. The West Virginia Mountaineers handed the Baylor Bears their second conference loss of the season. With that loss, Baylor fell from the ranks of conference title favorites.

No team in the conference is yet eliminated, but there’s a significant separation between the bottom and top half of the league. Oklahoma and Iowa State are both 0-3 in conference, while Baylor, Texas Tech and West Virginia have already lost twice. Barring chaos, those five likely won’t make the championship game.

Texas stands at 2-1 in conference play heading into their home game against Iowa State. The Cyclones could be the Longhorns’ least difficult remaining game, but shouldn’t be considered an easy win.

Let’s look at the five conference contenders most likely to make the Big 12 championship game.
