10 NFL draft prospects for the Eagles to watch at the HBCU Legacy Bowl

With the Scouting Combine fast approaching, we’re looking at 10 NFL draft prospects for the Eagles to watch at the HBCU Legacy Bowl

HBCUs have played a vital role in the development and popularity of the NFL, and as we head toward the NFL draft, some of college football’s top athletes will be on display this week.

On Monday, 47 NFL Draft hopefuls from HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) will participate in a Combine at the New Orleans Saints practice facility.

Then, practices will begin on Tuesday before the HBCU Legacy Bowl (Feb. 25, 4 p.m. ET, NFL Network).

Fayetteville State head coach Richard Hayes Jr. and North Carolina Central head coach Trei Oliver will coach Team Gaither (named after legendary Florida A&M coach Jake Gaither) at the Legacy Bowl. In contrast, Benedict College head coach Chennis Berry and Southern head coach Eric Dooley will lead Team Robinson (named after legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson).

Last year, four HBCU prospects were drafted, including Fayetteville State’s Joshua Williams, who won a Super Bowl ring with Kansas City, and Jackson State’s James Houston, who had eight sacks as a Lions rookie.

With the Eagles having a limited amount of draft picks, we’re previewing 10 players to watch at the HBCU Legacy Bowl.

Ed Reed rails against Bethune-Cook after head-coaching deal falls apart

Ed Reed will not be head coach at Bethune-Cookman after the school did not ratify his contract

The contract that Ed Reed had negotiated for weeks to become head football coach at Bethune-Cookman was not ratified, the NFL Hall of Famer announced on Saturday.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer tweeted the HBCU school would not make good on the agreement in principle it had reached with him.

Warning: Salty language in Reed’s impassioned speech.

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders showed his support for Reed.

Bethune-Cookman naming Ed Reed head football coach

Bethune Cookman is hiring ex-NFL star Ed Reed as its football coach

Ed Reed created many great memories as a star in college at the University of Miami. The former Hurricane great will look to do the same as a head coach. He agreed to the job with Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday.

Located in Daytona Beach, Florida, Bethune-Cookman is a Historically Black College with a football program that’s won a pair of national championships and 14 conference titles. However, Bethune-Cookman is coming off back-to-back 2-9 seasons since joining the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 2021.

Reed, one of the greatest Baltimore Ravens of all time, was an assistant defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2016. In 2020, he returned to his alma mater in an advisory role as the Hurricanes’ chief of staff.

Reed replaces Terry Sims, who was let go in November. Sims concluded his Wildcats career with a 38-39 record overall, having had four winning seasons out of the seven he led the Wildcats program.

PHOTOS: Iowa men’s basketball roasts Bethune-Cookman to open 2022-23 season

All five starters finished in double-figure scoring, including Tony Perkins’ game-high 16. Here were the best photos from the season opener.

Iowa wasted no time illustrating promise for the 2022-23 men’s college basketball season. All five Hawkeye starters finished with double-figure scoring, including point guard Tony Perkins who finished with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-9 field goal shooting.

“Tony Perkins has aggressiveness. He has skills. He is shooting the ball outside. He is driving the ball. He always had a pull-up game. He is getting to the rim. We put the ball in his hands a little bit more, so now he has more space, and he is even more effective.

“Five assists and one turnover, that is the thing that impressed me the most. When you put him at the point, you are going to have to give it up, and he does. But he did that from the first day he got here. He said, yeah, he was a scorer, he was a scoring guard, but you can put the ball in his hands. He will just get better,” Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery said of Perkins’ performance.

Filip Rebraca also recorded his 20th career double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

“He is aggressive offensively, he is aggressive in his ball-screen defense, he is aggressive in post defense. He is aggressive on the glass and running the floor. He is taking the ball, dribbling it, driving it and finishing the play, posting hard.

“Quite frankly, all the stuff he did when he was at North Dakota. He was dominant. For us he was really good. His role was different. We got to keep him here, and now he has taken charge. That’s what I wanted him to do. It was always in there, and now you’re seeing it,” McCaffery said of Rebraca.

Meanwhile, Kris Murray had 14 points, Payton Sandfort had 13 and Patrick McCaffery finished with 12.

With the win, Iowa begins its season 1-0. The Hawkeyes have now won 12 consecutive season openers, 78 of their last 83 nonconference home games and improved to 92-3 when holding opponents to fewer than 61 points during McCaffery’s tenure.

There are plenty of takeaways and Hawkeye social media was certainly delighted to have Iowa basketball back. It was a fun night from inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Take a look back at the season debut that was through these sensational still photos.

Miami vs Bethune-Cookman Game Preview

Why Bethune-Cookman Will Win

The Wildcats should bring a decent enough pass rush to make the Miami offensive line work at least a little bit.

Que’shaun Byrd is a good, quick back who can be dangerous to worry about, but any hope of keeping this from being a total wipeout comes from the defensive side that gets into the backfield from several spots – at least that’s the hope.

The defense has quick playmakers who can get to the ball, but …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

Miami should be able to pound away as much as it wants to.

The Bethune-Cookman defensive front won’t be able to hold up as Mario Cristobal’s era will likely start by establishing the offensive line and the ground attack.

There isn’t enough offensive punch from the Wildcats to make this any sort of a shootout, so the Hurricanes can try to be balanced, work on establishing a rhythm, and then hold up defensively against an offense that won’t have a dangerous passing game to make any second half noise.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

This is the game you schedule to ease into the season.

Miami needs to get the pieces in place on defense, the offense has to get the line play down, and the new coaching staff needs to know how it all works. That’s why you play Southern Miss next week before dealing with Texas A&M, and that’s why you schedule Bethune-Cookman.

Miami will have the twos handling most of the work in the second half as QB Tyler Van Dyke and the offense put this away after a few drives.
