5. LIU at FIU & Wagner at Buffalo

LINEFIU -7 & Buffalo -43.5
ATS PICKS: FIU & Wagner

There might be a whole slew of games to pick from on Thursday, but there aren’t a whole lot of FBS vs FBS games that appear to be a sure thing – those are coming (hopefully) with the Saturday version of this, out on Friday.

So here are two quirky picks that are off the radar – you might have to work to find these – but could be promising in the lines really do come close to holding firm.

FIU went 0-5 in 2020, but that was a wee bit of an aberration. It might have lost to Jacksonville State from the FCS world, and the offense was hardly consistent, but this version is far stronger.

If you go with these, though, go light.

Week 1 NFL Expert Picks

LIU has a whole lot of nice parts, and it’ll keep the game from becoming an ugly blowout, but FIU will push on by at home by more than a touchdown. FIU won’t be anything special, but it’s not Bryant or Merrimack – the two wins on the LIU spring schedule.

The other one is just a straight gaudy line play. If you’re new to the show, I have a hard and fast belief system that if someone wants to give me a 40-point lead walking into the stadium, I’ll take it and take my chances.

Wagner might not score against a terrific UB D, but if it does, it should have this thanks to all those wonderful, wonderful points. The Bull dogs might be called off in a hurry.

Before getting started with the Week 0 best picks against the spread, there are a few point total picks thrown in there with just five game played this weekend.

Also, as a heads up, I don’t really like any of these all that much – I like what’s coming on the 10 Best Week 1 version that’s coming next week a whole lot more.

Whatever … these five picks are right.

5. Nebraska at Illinois

LINENebraska -7
ATS PICK: Illinois

Is Illinois playing at home? Yes.

Could Illinois win this game outright in Game One of the Bret Bielema era? Yes.

Has Nebraska done anything over the last four seasons to make you think something magical is coming. Not really.

Nebraska is the better team, though.

It might not have a slew of sure-thing superstar playmakers – and that still includes QB Adrian Martinez, for now – but it should be able to run the ball a bit, and the defensive front seven should take over against a mediocre group of Illinois skill parts.

However, this is strictly a believe-it-when-I-see-it play taking Illinois at home with the points.

Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Lines, TV: Week 0

The Illini beat the Huskers 41-23 last year in Lincoln, lost by four in 2019, and got walloped in 2018 and 2017. Even with just one win in the series since 2015, this is still more up in the air than it might appear.

Illinois has veterans in the offensive backfield, a solid linebacking corps, and … yeah, if this goes one way big, it’ll be the Big Red going off and rolling. However, the Huskers have just two wins by more than seven points in their last 17 games.

What ten Ohio State vs Alabama College Football Playoff National Championship predictions appear to be the best bets and picks?

It’s Ohio State vs. Alabama.

It’s big-time vs. big-time, and we all want and need a really, really good college football game to close out the 2020 season.

Here are the ten best-looking prop bets, predictions, and big picks for tonight’s showdown. Warning … there’s a crossing of the streams here.

Value means as much or more here as anything else – so there will be a few contradictions. Let these confirm, deny, or help you in some way go with your already held beliefs.

Happy College Football Playoff National Championship night.

10. First score of the game an Alabama TD

LINE: +140
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Of course the first score might be a weird safety, or some quirky special teams or defensive touchdown, but that’s unlikely.

Alabama has managed to score the first in 11 of its 12 games, and in the one time it didn’t – the win over Ole Miss – its first points came on a touchdown. Three times, Bama scored first on a field goal, but the overwhelming number is on the side of scoring a touchdown first.

Clemson scored a touchdown first to open up the scoring against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, and Northwestern got the first touchdown – but the Buckeyes scored first on a field goal – in the Big Ten Championship.

Nebraska opened up the season with a touchdown drive on the Buckeye D.

Go Bama. Roll the first touchdown as the first score of the game.

9. Alabama QB Mac Jones over 365.5 passing yards

LINE: -110
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Oh why not?

Jones having an awful day is the one thing no one seems to be thinking about, and obviously this is a big number to hit no matter what, but how many times has he thrown for over 365 yards this year?

Now as many as you might think – six of the 12. However, that Trevor Lawrence guy hit Ohio State for 400 and Indiana’s Michael Penix cranked up 491. Even ol’ Rutgers went for 232.

There’s no real value at -110, but if you like Bama, you’re probably going to with some big stat pick like this anyway.

But if you’re going for the play that favors the bigger odds …

8. Ohio State money line and over 59.5

LINE: +360
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

It’s the same +360 if you’re going for 59.5 or 60.5, and you might as well get the extra value for that one more point from Ohio State on the money line and Over 58.5 at +340.

There’s far better value on this at Ohio State on the money line and with each team scoring 30 or more – more on that later – but if you think Ohio State is going to win, it’s probably going to be some sort of an offensive show both ways. And if it’s not, 59.5 isn’t asking for the world, here.

Remember, the Clemson obliteration of Bama in Santa Clara was 44-16.

7. Alabama RB Brian Robinson over 19.5 rushing yards

LINE: -105
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

There’s no value, but if you have an inkling …

The Ohio State run defense is terrific. It held Clemson to just 44 yards on the ground, gave up 44 to Penn State, too, and Indiana cranked up one fewer yard than you did – it netted -1 in the 42-35 loss – back in November.

Robinson has gone over 19.5 yards eight times, but he didn’t get there against Florida in the SEC Championship or against Notre Dame. All it takes, though, is one big dash, and if this somehow turns into any sort of Bama blowout, he’ll get the ball late.

6. Alabama RB Najee Harris to score the first TD

LINE+325
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Going back to the first item on the list at No. 10. Alabama has scored first in 11 of the 12 games, and it scored the first touchdown in nine of the 12. Out of those nine, how many games did Najee Harris score the first TD on the first score of the contest?

Five.

At +325, he’s worth the flier.

5. Oklahoma vs Iowa State

LINE: Oklahoma -5
ATS PICK: Oklahoma
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Take this with a grain of salt, because this is 63% hard analysis belief that Oklahoma is going to win this, and 35% You Never Ever Mess With History, and 2% Pac-12 Championship.

USC should’ve and could’ve won and covered that home Pac-12 Championship against Oregon, and juuuuuust as I was going to pick the Ducks under the belief that the program was due this year to come up with something special, I ignored feelings and gut and went with USC.

Never go with your feelings and gut, but yeah, you’ve been warned that part of this pick has nothing to do with logic and reason.

And that goes for assuming that history matters here – as if the 18-to-23-year-old guys on the field care a lick about what happened yesterday much less over the last ten years, much less in the 1890s.

Iowa State has never won an outright conference championship in over 100 yards of playing college football.

Oklahoma is going for its gajillionth outright conference title – it has taken down ten of the last 14 Big 12 championship games.

Never, ever, ever screw with a streak. It it gets broken, you tip your cap, and you go on about your day.

Enough with the tomfoolery …

Oklahoma didn’t have RB Rhamondre Stevenson in the first meeting. He’s a hammer with fresh legs to combine in a rotation against a terrific Iowa State run defense that allowed 114 yards the first time around.

Oklahoma have DE Ronnie Perkins in the first meeting, either. He has only played in four of the team’s nine games and he’s still third on the team in sacks and tackles for loss.

Also, this is a relatively young Sooner team in several spots. QB Spencer Rattler has been better and more settled as the season has gone on, four of the top five pass catchers are underclassmen, and the offense appears to be past the turnover problems of the first part of the year.

This is a terrific Iowa State team – it really would be awesome for the fan base if it won – but it’s Oklahoma in a Big 12 Championship.

NEXT: Minnesota at Wisconsin

10. Oklahoma State at Baylor

LINE: Oklahoma State -5
ATS PICK: Oklahoma State
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

At some point this slot machine is going to pay off.

Of course you never, ever, ever, ever, ever pick a game on spite, but after Oklahoma State failed to get the job done for us against Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and TCU, no way we’re going to miss out once this actually does work.

The real reason is the running game – Baylor doesn’t have one.

Oklahoma State’s biggest issue – or one of them – over this four-game run of ATS yuck has been its inability to stop the run, most inexcusably against the Red Raiders. That’s not going to be a problem this week against a Baylor team that hasn’t pushed past 75 yards in seven of its last eight games.

Five of Baylor’s last seven games were losses by six or more, with the outliers this year a win over Kansas, a close loss to Texas Tech, and a home victory over a dead Kansas State.

It’s time, Oklahoma State.

9. Houston at Memphis

LINEHouston -5
ATS PICK: Memphis
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Houston should be better than it is.

It’s missing some key parts, but there’s more than enough talent to have been better than 3-3 this year. To be fair, it’s been a disjointed campaign – the team couldn’t get the season going – but blowing out Tulane, Navy and USF just isn’t that big a deal.

Memphis is struggling. It couldn’t score against Navy in a 10-7 win, it’s coming off a two touchdown loss to Tulane, and …

That’s why you’re getting five points for a team that’s 4-0 at home.

Houston is 0-3 when allowing more than 360 yards of total offense, and despite the struggles of the last two games, the firepower is there for Memphis – who averages 467 yards per game – to find it again and start bombing away on a secondary that’s been hit hard by anyone who tested it.

8. Auburn at Mississippi State

LINE: Auburn -7
ATS PICK: Mississippi State
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

In the I Gotta Guy category, I’ve got a guy who knows everything about Auburn – no, this isn’t anything nefarious – who absolutely swears that Mississippi State is winning this outright.

The Bulldogs might not be all that good, but very, very quietly, Will Rogers is turning into a nice quarterback for Mike Leach. There still isn’t any downfield passing game, and the rushing attack doesn’t get off the bus, but the team was competitive on the road in seven-point losses to Georgia and Ole Miss over the last two weeks.

Auburn has been just okay all season long, and now it’s coming off the Iron Bowl blowout to Alabama and getting steamrolled over by Texas A&M in the home finale.

This might be a dead team, and now it has to go against a Mississippi State defense that’s been decent enough against the average offenses to keep this from getting crazy.

It would be nice if it was more than seven, but, my guy …

7. Georgia at Missouri

LINE: Georgia -13.5
ATS PICK: Missouri
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Missouri’s defense is a little bit of alright.

Try to blowoff the 50-48 win over Arkansas last week that got out of hand. The Tigers couldn’t handle the Hog attack, got ripped up by Florida, and it’s been able to stuff everyone else over the second half of the season.

Okay, so you and a few socially distant friends could holt Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt to nothing offensively, but the Mizzou D is great on third downs, the team is good at controlling the clock, and it should do a decent job at home at keeping this from getting ugly.

Georgia is the better team and it’s going to win, but the 13.5 is a bit too generous here.

6. Fresno State at New Mexico

LINE: Fresno State -12
ATS PICK: Fresno State
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

New Mexico is about to have a Jake Haener problem.

The Lobos were able to beat Wyoming last week, but that’s partly because there wasn’t any passing game to worry about stopping.

New Mexico has no pass rush whatsoever, it’s been rocked through the air by everyone else but the Cowboys, and Fresno State QB Jake Haener is coming off of back-to-back 400-yard games – hitting Nevada for 485 – for a team whose three wins were all by 13 or more.

College Football Free Predictions, Previews from Winners and Whiners: Week 15

The free predictions and links to game previews for Week 15 of the college football season from Winners and Whiners

[jwplayer j27zGrqK]

From Winners and Whiners

We’re winding up the college football season, before we get to the championships and bowl games. At press time, we do know that these marquee games are still on including Navy at Army, No. 9 Georgia at No. 25 Missouri and No. 17 North Carolina at No. 10 Miami.

(note:Some of these picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change)

*Navy travels to West Point for the first time in over 70 years to face Army. The 7-2 Black Knights have been impressive this season, though their only quality win came against Georgia Southern by one point on Nov. 21. That was their last game, but they still have Air Force and the Independence Bowl game to play. For Navy, this is it. They’ve lost four straight games and continue to have issues at quarterback. They’ve played a much tougher schedule and their defense has been outstanding over the last two week. Take the points with Mids and the seven.

*Georgia will not be in the CFP this season, but they are attempting to play on New Year’s Day. They face a feisty Missouri team that has won five of their last six games and should be going bowling. The key for Georgia is quarterback J.T. Daniels, the USC transfer, who has 540 yards and six TDs in wins over Mississippi State (31-24) and South Carolina (45-16). Georgia has taken care of teams this season, but they have not looked dominant as their defense has some holes. The Tigers will take advantage at home and cover the 13 points.

*Miami has quietly won five straight games but they are not playing for a title game. The ACC Championship is set with Notre Dame taking on Clemson once again next week. This game is about defense and whether Miami can hold down a North Carolina team that has pretty averaged over 54 points in their last three wins, but scored just 17 against the Irish on Nov. 27. The Tar Heels are loaded on offense, but their defense has been awful at times. Take the better defense and the ‘Canes giving the three points.

10. Kansas at Texas Tech

LINE: Texas Tech -25.5
ATS PICK: Texas Tech
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

We begin with a pick that I actually believe is probably wrong.

When the line first came out and was adjusted for Texas Tech -27.5, that seemed like a bit too much. The Red Raiders don’t really score enough on a regular basis, Kansas is way overdue to do something against a team with an awful defense, and …

It’s Kansas. In a ride-the-train-until-it-stops way, throw out most of the logic and reason, and blow off that this is a game we all should probably stay away from. The world is so up on picking against Kansas this year that we can all afford one misfire if this doesn’t work.

This might be Texas Tech’s last game of the season – Kansas is supposed to close out with Texas – and it’s at home where it won all three of its games.

9. Memphis at Tulane

LINE: Tulane -3
ATS PICK: Memphis
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

What’s weird is how fast this flipped.

It opened at Memphis -1 – which seemed like a bit of a good deal then – and all of a sudden, the world fell in love with Tulane and this moved all way up to Green Wave -3, and -3.5 in some spots.

No, this isn’t the Memphis of last year, but 1) Tulane has beaten NO ONE. The best victory of the season was against a mediocre Army team. 2) There’s a little bit of a Green Wave passing game, but not enough of one to get into a twist over, and 3) Memphis is actually good against the run.

The Tigers have won five of their last six, they’ve only had real issues with the Navy and Cincinnati ground attacks, and while they’ve struggled against some bad teams, they’ve won.

Sticking with strange American Athletic Conference calls …

8. Tulsa at Navy

LINE: Tulsa -12.5
ATS PICK: Navy
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

That is one big number for a Tulsa team that has a way of playing up or down to its competition, and then pulls out the win with something miraculous.

The big concern is that in a that’s-what-you-do sort of way, this Navy team is like an Arby’s that runs out of roast beef. The run-only team can’t really run the ball.

It’s fine, but is struggling to get to four yards per carry and it’s not controlling games like it needs to. Tulsa has been solid all season long against the run, and it needs this win to lock up a trip to the American Athletic Conference title game, but …

That number. Tulsa has one double-digit win this season and it’s against a bad USF team. This is the final home game of the season for Navy, and last week, Tulsa faced a Tulane team that needed to run to win, was held to 302 yards of total offense, and it was a 30-24 Golden Hurricane win.

7. Georgia Tech at NC State

LINE: NC State -6
ATS PICK: NC State
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

It seems like everyone got freaked out over the last few weeks.

NC State has quietly gone 7-3 by beating all the teams it was supposed to, and losing to the teams – at Virginia Tech, at North Carolina, Miami – that it should’ve. However, needing a blocked field goal to beat Liberty didn’t help in the public perception department, and needing a fourth down spike by Syracuse to get out 36-29 last week wasn’t a plus.

Combine that with a Georgia Tech 56-33 win over Duke last week, and the public has pulled the line down from NC State -7.

However, in an It’s Senior Day way, the Pack should take this by a touchdown. More importantly, NC State has a run defense – Syracuse came up with three rushing yards on 25 carries. The team is 7-0 when allowing fewer than 189 yards, and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Georgia Tech hasn’t hit 189 yards in there of its last four games.

6. Oregon at Cal

LINE: Oregon -9
ATS PICK: Oregon
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

In one of the weirder disappointments of the season, Cal is awful.

It’s 0-3, it couldn’t get by Oregon State on the road a few weeks ago even though the passing game worked, and it saw its shot against Stanford go bye-bye last week on a blocked extra point.

There’s no downfield passing game whatsoever, there’s no pressure in the backfield, and being last in the Pac-12 in total offense isn’t a positive against this Oregon team.

The Ducks haven’t been as strong as their preseason hype – at least if everything was normal, and HELLO, where’s the pass rush? – but the offense should be able to do enough to push for close to 40 points. Cal just doesn’t have that type of pop against a team that’s going to be a tad salty after last week’s foggy loss to Oregon State.

College Football Free Predictions, Previews from Winners and Whiners: Week 14

What ten college football games appear to be the best bets and the best picks against the spread going into Week 14? Here you go. Enjoy.

[jwplayer j27zGrqK]

From Winners and Whiners

College football is near the end of the line and it’s incredible that they’ve gotten to this point of the season with so many postponements and cancellations. At press time, we do know that these marquee games are still on including No. 12 Indiana at No. 16 Wisconsin, No. 3 Clemson at Virginia Tech and Baylor at No. 11 Oklahoma.

(note:Some of these picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change)

*Indiana takes on Wisconsin without starting QB Michael Penix Jr, who suffered a torn ACL in the Hoosiers’ 27-11 win over Maryland last week. IU will turn to Jack Tuttle, a Utah transfer, who was 5-of-5 for 34 yards in relief of Penix last week. He’s playing a much tougher defense this week in Wisconsin, who is coming off a 17-7 loss at Northwestern on Nov. 21.

It’s been a tough go for the 2-1 Badgers, in terms of just playing game. QB Graham Mertz leads the way with 8TDs and three picks, but they also use true freshman Jalen Berger as a running quarterback (180 yards rushing). Going to take the 14 points here with Indiana, who will just tell Tuttle to manage the game.

*Clemson just waxed Pittsburgh last week 52-17 at home after having not played in three weeks. Trevor Lawrence wasn’t very rusty as he threw for 403 yards with two TDs and no picks. They’ll take on a disappointing Virginia Tech team that has lost three straight. They also faced Pittsburgh (on Nov. 21) and were destroyed 47-14. The Hokies have allowed 30 or more points five times this season. What has happened to their defense under Justin Fuente? Their week off this week won’t really help them against the Tigers. Expect another Clemson blowout and a cover of the 22 points.

*Oklahoma is red-hot, having won five straight games since losing two straight. They have not played in two weeks due to COVID issues. In their last game on Nov. 21, they destroyed rival Oklahoma State 41-14. Baylor beat Kansas State 32-31 and had to come from behind to win the game last week. That snapped a five-game losing streak. But this is a very high line. QB Charlie Brewer should be good enough and will make enough plays to cover this 21-point spread. Take the Bears and the points.

10. TCU at Kansas

LINE: TCU -24
ATS PICK: TCU
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Sometimes you don’t ask questions, and you keep going with something good until it stops.

Every time this year you think Kansas is overdue for one of its out-of-the-blue big performances, it gets rocked yet again. The 15-point loss to Coastal Carolina was a relative squeaker, and the closest KU has come in Big 12 play was a 38-17 loss at West Virginia.

It’s a home game, the Jayhawks haven’t played in weeks, and TCU isn’t exactly the most explosive of teams. In many ways the -24 doesn’t make sense, but Kansas can’t get the offense going at all, the lines are a disaster, and TCU has a good enough pass rush and is great on third downs. …

Again, sometimes, you don’t ask questions.

9. Miami University at Akron

LINE: Miami University -14
ATS PICK: Miami University
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

The line is way, way, way too low because Miami hasn’t played for a while, and when it did, it was blasted 42-10 by Buffalo, and because Akron is at home.

Even when the Zips played as well as they can, they still lost to Ohio 24-10, and those 14 points are what you’re giving away.

Akron has a bit of a running game, but Miami is a solid team that controls the tempo and should be able to rip through a D that gave up 58 to Western Michigan and 69 to Kent State. MU doesn’t have the same firepower, but a two touchdown win won’t be an issue.

8. Auburn at Alabama

LINE: Alabama -24.5
ATS PICK: Auburn
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

WARNING … I keep picking against Alabama, and I keep getting embarrassed.

I gave you the exact same warning last week before Bama whacked around Kentucky 63-3, and I also send up a flare before I picked Mississippi State to cover – it lost 41-0.

I don’t want to talk about the win over Tennessee.

So why do I keep picking against Bama? Because it’s one of those teams that gets out early, coasts, and then has the defense to give up points late. However, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Kentucky are bad. Auburn isn’t.

If you have visions of the 52-21 Crimson Tide win over the Tigers in 2018, then go for it – you’re probably right. However, Bo Nix and the passing game are finally starting to find something that seems to be working – even if they’re not that consistent – the O doesn’t turn the ball over, and pass defense is the second-best in the SEC, for whatever that’s worth this year.

It’s +24.5 in a rivalry game that’s seen its share of bizarre twists and turns. At some point, this picking against the Alabama slot machine is going to pay out.

7. Kent State at Buffalo

LINE: Buffalo -7.5
ATS PICK: Buffalo
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Three factors here. 1) Revenge. Kent State came up with a miraculous win last year to screw up Buffalo’s season. 2) Buffalo has more talent and it’s dominating everyone, and 3) it’s a schedule play.

UB rocking on the road against Northern Illinois and Bowling Green wasn’t that big a deal, but the 42-10 home win over Miami University was a thing. Kent State put up 62 on Bowling Green and 69 on Akron. That’s Bowling Green and Akron – Buffalo is the best team in the MAC.

See if you can get this at -7, but it’s fine with the hook.

6. San Diego State at Colorado

LINEColorado -3
ATS PICK: Colorado
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

It’s been a tough ask so far for a team to pivot from a scheduled game, pick up the stuff, and go on the road to play a game with no prep time. It’s tough for the other side, too, but Arizona struggled in a 44-27 loss at Washington last week – that’s probably what it would’ve been, anyway – in a last-second arrangement, and Cal got blasted at UCLA when it had to change around its opening game.

It’s a good San Diego State team, but it lost two of its last three games without enough offense. It has to make the trip to Boulder – the weather won’t be that bad in the 40s – and Colorado has played well enough offensively over the first two games to get the win. The -3 is a guess by the investing public – that’s going to shoot up.
