Colts not named a “best landing spot” for PFF’s top available free agents

Of PFF’s top 20 available free agents, which includes several defensive backs, the Colts were not named a “best landing spot” for any.

Of Pro Football Focus’ top 20 remaining free agents, the Indianapolis Colts were not named a “best landing spot” for any of them.

The reason that this is specifically of some interest to the Colts is because several of PFF’s top remaining free agents play either the cornerback or safety positions—two big positional needs that the Colts still have to address.

Below is a look at who those players are along with their overall ranking from PFF:

1. Justin Simmons (S)

2. Stephon Gilmore (CB)

3. Steven Nelson (CB)

5. Xavien Howard (CB)

8. Julian Blackmon (S)

13. Adoree’ Jackson (CB)

For what it’s worth, GM Chris Ballard did mention via The Athletic that the Colts have re-started talks with Blackmon. There are also safeties not on this list still available, most notably Tashaun Gipson, Quandre Diggs, and Jayron Kesrse, who could come in and make an impact.

At cornerback the Colts do have Kenny Moore manning the slot, and Ballard would also add that he likes the team’s three young boundary corners in Jaylon Jones, JuJu Brents, and Dallis Flowers. However, relying completely on those three does come with some risks.

“We know we need to add,” said Ballard about the secondary via the Colts team site, “and there’s still some vets out there that we will definitely pay attention to,” Ballard said. “But there’s still work to be done.”

From a salary cap standpoint, the Colts have the 13th most effective salary cap space available, according to Over the Cap, giving them some flexibility to make an addition or two.

If the Colts don’t add to the cornerback or safety rooms over the next few weeks, they’ll then turn their attention to the draft to tackle these needs.

The good news is that this is a very deep cornerback class. Overall, it was one of PFF’s highest-graded position groups, with the class receiving an A for its depth. And with such talented offensive tackle and wide receiver groups in this class as well, that could help push down some of the top cornerback options, most notably, Terrion Arnold and Quinyon Mitchell, to the Colts at pick 15.

The safety position in this year’s draft is a different story, however. Unless a team plans to convert Iowa’s Cooper DeJean to safety, there likely aren’t any that are going to be selected in the first round, especially at pick 15 where the Colts are.

On Daniel Jeremiah’s recent top 50 big board, no safeties made the list, while this position group received the second-lowest grade from PFF with a C+ in terms of overall talent and depth. So when it comes to the Colts finding some immediate impact help at this position, that admittedly is a more difficult task than at cornerback.

Every GM wants options in the draft so they don’t feel like they have to select a certain position at a specific spot. Adding to the secondary in free agency before the draft, specifically at safety, would provide Ballard with some added flexibility when on the clock.

Best available players after first round of NFL Draft

With six picks until Raiders select at 38, here are the top players still on the board.

The first round is over. There were plenty of surprise picks. And with every surprise pick, there’s a player who surprisingly was not picked.

The Raiders pick next at 38 in the second round, which means unless they trade up, they will watch six teams pick before they are on the clock again. They have plenty of needs to fill on the team, so they could go in a lot of different directions.

Most notably, the Raiders could look to draft a quarterback and Will Levis is still on the board.

Levis was the most mocked player to the Raiders at seven overall for the first two months of the offseason. They went with Texas Tech DE Tyree Wilson while Levis sat in the green room all night going unpicked.

Other notable players on the board who may be of interest to the Raiders incluce CB Joey Porter Jr, Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer, Florida G O’cyrus Torrence, and Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker.

With the first round in the books, here are the best available players when combining the big board rankings of several NFL Draft professionals.

Poona Ford ranks among best of free agent defensive tackles still available

Seattle Seahawks Poona Ford is likely the best free-agent defensive tackle still available after the first wave of free agency wraps up.

The Seattle Seahawks added a couple of new players to their defensive line, including Dre’Mont Jones and former Hawk Jarran Reed, but have yet to sign one of their own biggest contributors as of late, defensive tackle Poona Ford.

CBS Sports has Ford ranked as the best free-agent defensive tackle still available after the first week of the new league year.

“Surprising Ford is still on the market as the second wave of free agency approaches,” writes Jeff Kerr. “The 27-year-old has 83 quarterback pressures across the last three seasons, since 2020, the most on the Seattle Seahawks in that span. Any team who could use a solid rotational piece along the interior of the defensive line should give him a call. ”

Ford may not be available that much longer if the reports of Buffalo’s interest ring true. More on that story can be found here.

Top Day 3 NFL draft prospects at positions of need for the Saints

Here are the top NFL draft prospects at positions of need for the Saints still available in Day 3, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

Good big boards are usually depleted by the end of Day 2 of the NFL draft, and that goes for Dylan Sanders and his top-100 players as well. However, there are still some surprising prospects available going into the third day of the draft for the New Orleans Saints to potentially take advantage of.

With two selections left, one fifth-rounder (164) and one in the sixth (191), it may be a while until the Saints are on the board. But they could also look to trade up. Here are some of the best prospects still available in what many consider “Special Teams Day.”

2022 Draft: Best players remaining for Day 2

There’s still plenty of top talent at WR, EDGE, and LB, all areas of need for the Cowboys heading into Day 2 of the NFL draft. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Now we do it all over again, only with 32 fewer names to choose from on the big board.

The Cowboys added one college prospect to their roster during the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, although many fans are skeptical about whether they really helped their talent level that much.

But with the second and third rounds of picks set to kick off Friday evening from Las Vegas, the Cowboys have two more opportunities to restock the shelves, and then- barring any trades- six additional selections on Saturday.

With lots of difference-makers still available and several areas of need still glaring in Dallas, let’s take a look at some of the best players- from our friends at Draft Wire– who will be hoping to hear their name called on Day 2.

Quandre Diggs could be the 1 free agent Seahawks must keep on roster

Free safety Quandre Diggs could be the one free agent the Seattle Seahawks must keep on their roster heading into the new league year.

The start of the new league year and NFL free agency kick off in just under a month and analysts and teams are cramming to put together their lists of the best available players.

Over at NFL.com, senior analyst Gil Brandt took a look at every team and picked one potential free agent each club needs to keep on its roster. For the Seahawks, it’s free safety Quandre Diggs.

“If Russell Wilson stays in Seattle, Pete Carroll and John Schneider will be under pressure to produce a winning roster after a disappointing 7-10 finish,” Brandt starts. “Bringing Diggs back would be one of the more straightforward moves they could make in that effort. Since being traded to Seattle in 2019, Diggs has piled up 13 interceptions and 20 passes defensed.”

“There are multiple defensive backs hitting the market, and an argument could be made for inking cornerback D.J. Reed, who broke out in his first season as a full-time starter in Year 4 and bested Diggs in catch rate over expectation (-11.9 for Reed, -0.3% for Diggs),” Brandt continues. “But if I had to choose, I’d go with the more proven Diggs, even with the caveat that he’s coming off a broken fibula and dislocated ankle suffered in Week 18.”

Seahawks select Creed Humphrey at No. 56 in Touchdown Wire mock

Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire has the Seattle Seahawks selecting center Creed Humphrey at No. 56 in his second-round 2021 NFL mock draft.

The start of the second day of the 2021 NFL draft is just hours away and Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire has now put the finishing touches on his second-round mock draft.

While he has a number of trades sprinkled throughout the night, Schofield has the Seahawks staying put and pulling the trigger on center Creed Humphrey from Oklahoma to beef up Seattle’s offensive line.

“The Seattle Seahawks have just three picks in the 2021 NFL draft, and have a few needs including EDGE and cornerback,” Schofield starts. “While they cannot fill all of those holes with just one pick, they address a bit one, adding center Creed Humphrey from Oklahoma.

“Humphrey is experienced and powerful, and gives Pete Carroll and company a solid option in the interior on day one.”

The pick would not only be beneficial to Carroll and crew but would also put a smile on quarterback Russell Wilson’s face, knowing he has a little extra protection heading into the season.

All the action kicks off at 4:00 p.m. PT and be sure and follow along with Seahawks Wire as we keep you updated on all the latest news!

Day 3 mock draft: Bengals upgrade line in front of Joe Burrow in Rounds 4-7

Here’s an updated Cincinnati Bengals mock draft for Rounds 4-7 of the 2020 NFL draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals threw a bit of a curveball with the first pick of the second day of the draft. While many thought it would be an offensive tackle or perhaps a defensive lineman, Cincinnati chose to add a wide receiver for Joe Burrow. But it wasn’t Baylor WR Denzel Mims, who was regarded as the top receiver on the board. Instead, it was Clemson WR Tee Higgins.

They then came back in Round 3 and addressed the linebacker position with Logan Wilson of Wyoming, a tackling machine in college. So the interesting note is that they have not addressed the offensive line yet, especially considering Josh Jones fell all the way to No. 72 to the Arizona Cardinals.

So with all that in mind, let’s see what the Bengals can potentially do in the final day of the draft. Here’s a day three mock draft.

No. 107 – Prince Tega Wanogho, OT, Auburn

The Bengals find an offensive tackle that could have went early in Round 3 still available to begin Round 4. Wanogho can start as a swing tackle before eventually sliding into Bobby Hart’s spot at right tackle.
