Three Texas Longhorns named preseason All-Americans by Phil Steele

This trio of Longhorns will be crucial for success in the SEC this season.

With the summer months upon us, Phil Steele once again has released his college football season preview magazine. It is chock full of analysis and nuggets for the upcoming year.

In what seems to be an annual tradition, we were interested to see where he projects several Texas Longhorns for his preseason All-American team. There were a trio of Horns on the list but not one came from the defensive side of the ball. They will have an opportunity to prove their worth in due time.

As for the three who were named, two play offense, and one is a special teamer.

Fourth-Team Quarterback: Quinn Ewers

Texas starting quarterback Quinn Ewers checks in at No. 4 at quarterback and No. 3 in the SEC. Carson Beck of Georgia and Jalen Milroe of Alabama were the No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks with current Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel coming in at No. 3.

Ewers has yet to play a full season without injury. However, Ewers led the Horns to the College Football Playoffs and a Big 12 title in 2023. Texas looks to compete for the SEC title in 2024 as well as a return trip to the CFP. With a new set of receivers, it is important for QE to set the tone for the season against Colorado State and Michigan in the first couple of weeks.

Second-Team Offensive Tackle: Kelvin Banks

Standout offensive tackle and likely top 10 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, Kelvin Banks was named to the second team. Oregon’s Ajani Cornelius and LSU’s Will Campbell took the top two spots. Banks is one of the major reasons for the success of the offensive line.

Banks and three other starters return from last year’s team that finished 12-2. He should pave the way for CJ Baxter and the rest of the backs as they join a loaded SEC that will test them.

Second-Team Kicker: Bert Auburn

The lone special teamer to earn preseason praise is Bert Auburn, who is the second-team kicker behind Alabama’s Graham Nicholson. Auburn is more proven given that Nicholson wasn’t the Crimson Tide starter at placekicker last season.

Provided Auburn can continue converting kicks at the same rate, he should be among the finalists for the Lou Groza Award this upcoming season.

Bert Auburn could be an All-American candidate in the 2024 season

One Longhorn listed on early All-American team.

After the 2023 season, T’Vondre Sweat was named a Unanimous All-American. The year before running back Bijan Robinson was named the lone Unanimous All-American for the Texas Longhorns. Offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., wide receiver Xavier Worthy, and defensive tackle Byron Murphy II were also named All-Americans but didn’t earn Unanimous honors.

Looking at the 2024 roster, there is a plethora of talent that could be on the radar as All-Americans including offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., quarterback Quinn Ewers, wide receiver Isaiah Bond, and edge Trey Moore among others.

On Tuesday, Pro Football Focus released their way-too-early All-American team with just one Texas Longhorn making the list.

Auburn has been a weapon for the Longhorns over the last couple of seasons. The kicker could be among All-American status for Texas in 2024, along with being a candidate for the Lou Groza Award.

What PFF Says…

Auburn has made plenty of big kicks in his career. He was a perfect 56-of-56 on extra points a season ago and missed only six field goals out of 35 attempts. His 90.5 field-goal grade is a top-10 mark among returning kickers.

Now off to the SEC, Texas is surely going to be in many close games with massive implications in 2024. Auburn will be an asset.

Texas Longhorns kicker Bert Auburn awarded with scholarship

Check out this video that was released on Sunday.

Texas Longhorns senior kicker Bert Auburn was rewarded by head coach Steve Sarkisian in a team meeting with a scholarship in a video posted to social media on Sunday.

As the team was discussing walk-ons during a team meeting, Sarkisian said, “They go through the same grind all scholarship guys go on all summer long. When we can reward those guys, man, there’s nothing better. Bert Auburn, you’re on scholarship.”

Auburn was greeting with cheers from his teammates and told his teammates, “I love all you guys. You guys are all like a family to me. Couldn’t be more excited to get to work this summer with you all. Hook ‘em.”

After making 3-of-3 extra points his freshman year, Auburn went 21-for-26 in 2022 before going 29-for-35 in 2023 as he earned All Big 12 First Team honors. He also set the Big 12 record for consecutive field goals made with 19 during the 2023 season. Auburn is a business major.

Auburn is tied for second in Texas history with 50 field goals made in his career, trailing only Cameron Dicker. He also ranks third in total points behind Dicker and Dusty Mangum.

Texas kicker Bert Auburn nearly upset Alabama, and everyone made the same joke

An aptly named Texas kicker almost took down Nick Saban and Alabama.

Alabama doesn’t play Auburn until November 26, but the Crimson Tide nearly fell at the hands of Auburn in Austin on Saturday afternoon.

Texas kicker Bert Auburn, that is.

With 1:29 remaining in the fourth quarter in a game that Alabama led by one, Auburn connected on a 49-yard field goal. Texas’s lead was short-lived, however, as reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young led the Crimson Tide on a nine-play, 61-yard drive that spanned 1:19 and ended with the game-winning field goal from Will Reichard.

Unsurprisingly, the internet all had the same joke. Bama escaped Auburn once this season… can they do it again during SEC play?
