Colts’ Braden Smith ruled out vs. Jaguars in Week 6

Braden Smith won’t play against the Jaguars due to a new hip injury.

Indianapolis Colts right tackle Braden Smith was ruled out on the final injury report Friday ahead of the Week 6 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith popped up on the injury report this week due to wrist and foot injuries. After not practicing Wednesday, he returned to practice Thursday as a limited participant.

However, Smith didn’t practice Friday and it was revealed he suffered a hip injury during Thursday’s practice.

The optimism that Smith would be good to go after returning to practice has been dashed so it’s likely that rookie Blake Freeland will make his third start of the season, assuming left tackle Bernhard Raimann clears the concussion protocol.

On that note, Raimann and defensive end Kwity Paye are still in the concussion protocol and need to be cleared by the independent neurologist, a decision that likely will come Saturday.

The Colts will release their final injury report with designations later Friday so we’ll have a better idea of what the statuses look like going into this divisional game.

Colts rule out 3 players vs. Titans in Week 5

The Colts ruled out a trio of players ahead of the Week 5 matchup.

The Indianapolis Colts ruled out three players Friday ahead of the Week 5 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Head coach Shane Steichen met with the media Friday, ruling out linebacker Shaquille Leonard (groin), defensive end Kwity Paye (concussion) and Bernhard Raimann (concussion).

Leonard had been battling a groin injury he picked up during the Week 4 loss against the Los Angeles Rams. He didn’t practice all week and will be replaced by E.J. Speed on Sunday.

Both Paye and Raimann failed to clear the concussion protocol in time, but it does appear they’re heading in the right direction. They both were wearing the red non-contact jerseys during Friday’s practice, which is one of the first steps toward clearing the protocol.

They still need to log a full practice with contact and then get cleared by the independent neurologist, but there’s a good chance that happens in Week 6.

This will be Raimann’s second consecutive missed game due to the concussion while this will be Paye’s first.

In other injury news, center Ryan Kelly will make his return after missing 2.5 games due to a concussion.

The Colts will release their final Week 5 injury report with designations later Friday.

Notes

  • After holding a walkthrough Wednesday, the Colts held a typical practice Thursday
  • Jonathan Taylor seems healthy enough to be activated after logging full practices, but how he responds Friday will be key.
  • Kwity Paye and Bernhard Raimann are still in the concussion protocol and have yet to practice since entering the protocol. Missing the first two days of the week typically means they won’t be available, but there is still a chance they clear protocol in time.
  • Ryan Kelly appears on track to return this week, but he still needs to be cleared by the independent neurologist.
  • DeForest Buckner and Quenton Nelson are still dealing with their ailments but were able to play in Week 4. They both improved their participation levels from the start of the week.
  • Mo Alie-Cox and Tyquan Lewis both returned to practice after being listed as DNPs on Wednesday.

Colts’ Ryan Kelly, Bernhard Raimann remain in concussion protocol

Ryan Kelly and Bernhard Raimann are still in the concussion protocol as of Wednesday.

Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly and left tackle Bernhard Raimann remain in the concussion protocol, per head coach Shane Steichen on Wednesday.

Both Kelly and Raimann were inactive during the Week 4 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams due to concussions. Kelly has missed the last two games while Raimann was placed on the protocol during the middle of the week because he developed symptoms after Thursday’s practice.

Along with Kelly and Raimann, defensive end Kwity Paye also is in the protocol after developing symptoms following the Week 4 game.

The Colts held a walkthrough instead of a typical practice Wednesday to help the players rest a bit after consecutive overtime games, but a practice report will still be released.

Kelly and Raimann still have time to clear the protocol in order to play against the Tennessee Titans in Week 5, but the following two practices will be crucial.
