Even if not the top scorer in NBA history, Michael Jordan is probably the best scorer we’ve seen on a basketball court. It was not very often that an opponent (or a teammate) put more points on the board than him.

Actually, only one player outscored MJ in their matchups during his Chicago years. And then he did it again when His Airness was a member of the Wizards…

Charles Oakley is taking a break in his feud with James Dolan and zeroing in instead on several prominent former Knicks. Oakley, the longtime former Knick who hasn’t been back at the Garden since his infamous arrest there in February of 2017, said he wanted to “smack” Bernard King and faulted Patrick Ewing’s lack of leadership for the team never being able to win a title in his day. “He never put us on his back like he should have because every adversity he ducked away from,” Oakley said of Ewing on CBS Sports Radio. “He gave the same f–king answer after every 82 games of the year.”

A look at Tennessee’s Naismith Hall of Famers

A look at Tennessee’s Naismith Hall of Famers.

KNOXVILLE — When Tamika Catchings was officially selected for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday, she became the first Lady Vol player to be so honored.

Catchings, a first-ballot hall of famer, however, joins two others with University of Tennessee ties being enshrined in Springfield, Mass.

Her coach, Pat Summitt was inducted in 2000. Sumitt, who died from complications from early-onset dementia in 2016, was a true pioneer and trailblazer for women’s basketball.

Summitt won 1,098 games and eight NCAA Tournament championships. Her teams made the Final Four 18 times, won 16 Southeastern Conference Tournament titles and 16 SEC regular-season championships.

In 2013, men’s basketball player Bernard King was inducted to the hall of fame.

He is one of UT’s most decorated players.

With the Volunteers, King was the SEC Player of the Year three times. He was a three-time All-American and his number (53) is retired by the Vols.

In the NBA, King played for the New Jersey Nets (1977-79, 1993), Utah Jazz (1979-80), Golden State Warriors (1980-82), New York Knicks (1982-87) and Washington Bullets (1987-1991).

He was a four-time NBA All-Star and earned numerous honors throughout his professional career.

Catchings is the Indiana Fever’s general manager and one of the WNBA’s most decorated players. She also played professionally overseas, winning a Polish League Title and two Turkish Cups.

She was a WNBA Rookie of the Year, a league MVP and a WNBA Finals MVP.

Today in Nets history: One of Bernard King’s most dominant rookie performances

Bernard King started and ended his Hall of Fame career with the New Jersey Nets, bouncing around to four other teams in between.

With the NBA on hiatus — which NBA commissioner Adam Silver set at 30 days — and New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, placing a ban on gatherings of more than 500 people for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, no Brooklyn Nets games will be played for the time being.

For the Nets, as much as any team, this comes at an odd time — Brooklyn was battling the Orlando Magic for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference standings. At the stoppage of play, the Nets had a half-game advantage over the Magic.

Since there aren’t any games, each day Nets Wire will highlight major individual performances and key developments throughout Nets history:

Well before he dropped 60 on the New Jersey Nets on Christmas Day in 1984, Bernard King was a member of the New Jersey Nets.

Selected No. 7 overall in the 1977 NBA draft, King didn’t waste much time taking over, logging his first double-double (18 points and 12 rebounds) in his second NBA game. He finished with 19 double-doubles by the end of the 1977-78 season.

King’s highest scoring night came on January 4 (44 points), his second 40-point game — both performances being double-doubles. But the Nets forward logged his highest rebound total as a rookie on March 22, 1978, when the New Jersey knocked off the Chicago Bulls 105-99 (full box score).

King came two rebounds shy of 20 total and logged over 10 defensive rebounds (14) for the first time in his NBA career. The Nets rookie also led the team in scoring with 33 points on 14-for-26 shooting.

There was another statistical category in which King logged double figures, though he didn’t log a triple-double. That’s because the category was turnovers, of which King committed 10. He did that twice as a rookie.

Wilson Washington also had a double-double in the win, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds. John Williamson scored 23 for the Nets, while Kevin Porter scored 13 and had seven assists.

Three Bulls logged double-doubles: Mickey Johnson (22 points and 10 rebounds), Mark Landsberger (13 points and 15 rebounds) and Artis Gilmore (23 points and 16 rebounds). Gilmore also blocked four shots.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Quartet played as attendees took their seats. It was a collection of NBA luminaries: Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas, Clyde Drexler, David Robinson, Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki, Bernard King, Steve Nash, Bill Walton, Dikembe Mutombo, Johnson and a collection of owners and executives from teams across the league.
