SHOW TOPICS

  • Despite a huge experience advantage, [autotag]Derek Brunson[/autotag] was a big betting underdog at this past weekend’s UFC on ESPN+ 31 event. Still, the middleweight scored a big stoppage win over a previously undefeated [autotag]Edmen Shahbazyan[/autotag]. So for those that got it wrong, were we too quick to write off Brunson, or was Shabazyan’s hype not justified?
  • Dana White’s Contender Series is back on Tuesday, but it comes at a time when the entire sport is returning to live action. So with a crowded MMA landscape competing for fans’ attention, how well is the prospects-driven show doing entering its fourth season?
  • UFC featherweight champion [autotag]Alexander Volkanovski[/autotag] doesn’t seem too keen on a potential trilogy fight with former titleholder [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag], which is understandable since “Blessed” is winless in the two fights. However, UFC president Dana White isn’t ruling out the possibility. What’s the right move here?
  • After a lengthy hiatus, Bellator is now back in full swing, and this Friday the promotion is offering a tantalizing rematch between superstars [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] and [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag]. Meanwhile the UFC counters Saturday night with a heavyweight clash between slugger [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] and submission master [autotag]Aleksei Oleinik[/autotag]. Which is the bigger fight?

Video: Michael Chandler, Benson Henderson sound off ahead of Bellator 243 rematch

Michael Chandler and Benson Henderson sound off as tensions rise ahead of their eagerly-anticipated rematch at Bellator 243.

Two of Bellator’s very best will go head to head in the main event of Bellator 243 on Aug. 7 and, just one week from fight night, [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] and [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag] are all fired up and ready to go.

Three-time former Bellator lightweight champion Chandler (20-5 MMA, 17-5 BMMA) and former Bellator and UFC lightweight champ Henderson (28-8 MMA, 5-3 BMMA) are set to meet in an eagerly-anticipated rematch at the Mohegan Sun Arena next Friday night, and the pair checked in with play-by-play commentator Mike Goldberg to build the anticipation ahead of their pivotal lightweight fight.

The duo faced off at Bellator 165 in November 2016, when Chandler defeated Henderson via split decision to defend the promotion’s 155-pound strap in San Jose. As the result suggests, it was a super-close encounter, and now Henderson has the opportunity to avenge that defeat and put himself in pole position to challenge for the lightweight belt currently held by Brazil’s Patricio Freire.

Chandler, meanwhile, plans on claiming a second successive victory over “Smooth” to position himself for a rematch with Freire, who stopped him in May last year to win the lightweight title.

Based on their three-way video call with Goldberg, both men are primed and ready for another epic encounter, with Chandler insisting the result will go his way once again, while Henderson vowed to come out fast after “giving away” the first round to his opponent in their first meeting.

Bellator 243 takes place Friday, Aug. 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Conn. The main card will air live on Paramount and DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Michael Chandler vs. Benson Henderson 2, Matt Mitrione vs. Tim Johnson set for Bellator 243

The Bellator 243 lineup is starting to take form.

The Bellator 243 lineup is rolling out.

On Aug. 7, Bellator will head back to Mohegan Sun Arena for its second event since returning from hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Headlining the card will be a rematch between former Bellator lightweight champion [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] and former UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag].

Additionally, heavyweight contenders [autotag]Matt Mitrione[/autotag] and [autotag]Tim Johnson[/autotag] will square off in Uncasville, Conn.

Multiple sources informed MMA Junkie of the bookings Thursday but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Combate was first to report Chandler vs. Henderson 2.

Chandler (20-5 MMA, 17-5 BMMA) and Henderson (28-8 MMA, 5-3 UFC) first fought at Bellator 165 in November 2016. At the time, Chandler was Bellator’s 155-pound titleholder. After five rounds, the fight went to the judges’ scorecards, with Chandler declared the split decision winner.

Since their first meeting, Chandler has gone 4-1. His lone loss was an unsuccessful title defense against Patricio Freire. After losing his belt, Chandler defeated Sidney Outlaw by knockout last December.

As for Henderson, “Smooth” dropped a fight to Patricky Freire after losing to Chandler. He has since rattled off four straight victories.

[lawrence-related id=498730,498536]

Mitrione (13-7 MMA, 4-2 BMMA) has gone 0-2 with a no contest in his past three fights. He was expected to fight Ronny Markes at Bellator 241 in March, however, the event was canceled just hours prior to its scheduled start time.

Johnson (13-6 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) is coming off a massive upset victory at Bellator 239 in February. Taking on undefeated prospect Tyrell Fortune, Johnson pulled off a highlight-reel first-round knockout via punches.

Bellator 243 takes place Friday, Aug. 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card is expected to simulcast on DAZN and Paramount Network after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Benson Henderson not ready to reflect on legacy while Bellator title aspirations remain

One day, Benson Henderson will take some time to appreciate what he’s accomplished, but now is not the time.

You could forgive a fighter as accomplished as [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag] if he wanted to take a moment to ponder his legacy.

Not only has the 36-year-old Arizona resident racked up numerous accolades over the years, but he’s been a significant factor in three different major MMA promotions. Henderson held 155-pound gold in both the fondly remembered WEC and in the UFC. He currently competes in Bellator, where he hasn’t yet won a title but is on a four-fight winning streak.

As far as Henderson is concerned, though, the time for talk about what his legacy might be is when his career is done – not know when there still could be another championship in his future.

“For right now, I’m still fighting, still just trying to do my thing,” Henderson recently told MMA Junkie Radio. “I don’t try to make it grander than it is and put it into big words and do this and do that. When I’m done fighting, I’ll be able to have all the time in the world to think about it and give it scope and meaning and put fancy words to it and build it up bigger than it is.”

[lawrence-related id=520633,498730]

One thing Henderson is willing to grant is a point of pride in the consistency of effort he’s brought to his fighting career. Henderson has been been in events big and small, has headlined and has been on undercards. But no matter how big the spotlight, his mindset remains the same.

“It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s a local Arizona podunk jiu-jitsu tournament, or whether it’s a world title fight, in wherever, Korea. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the back of a 7-Eleven, whether it’s fighting on the prelims. Every fight I have, everything I do, I give everything I have. As soon as I commit to something, I give everything. Some guys don’t do that. That’s the only way I know how to do it.”

Henderson can tell you one thing about his track record, though: If it’s up to him, his fighting legacy will end with him and not be something that gets passed along through generations of his family. “Smooth” has four children, and he doesn’t want to see them pick their father’s career path.

“My boys are going to be astronauts,” he said. “They’re going to go to Mars. The first humans ever to set foot on Mars, the first brothers ever to go to space together. But no, I don’t necessarily want them to become fighters. … I don’t want my kids to be fighters at all.”

Benson Henderson says ‘Pitbull’ brothers can fix Bellator’s lightweight logjam

Benson Henderson offers his take on how the Bellator lightweight title picture should play out.

[autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag] has a plan to fix Bellator’s lightweight logjam, and it involves both of the promotion’s “Pitbull” brothers.

Henderson (28-8 MMA, 5-3 BMMA) was scheduled to rematch former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler at Bellator 244 on June 6, but, due to the coronavirus outbreak, his fight will be postponed to a later date.

After a 1-3 start to his Bellator tenure, Henderson has won his last four in a row and is looking to earn another crack at the title with a win over Chandler.

“When I beat Chandler, I’m getting that title shot next,” Henderson told MMA Junkie.

The problem with Henderson’s plan is the fact that Bellator featherweight and lightweight champion [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] is currently embroiled in the 145-pound grand prix, which means he won’t be defending his 155-pound title until he has completed his participation in the tournament.

Patricio is set to face Pedro Carvalho in the quarterfinals of the grand prix, and with the Bellator schedule already falling behind due to the unscheduled cessation of events due to the coronavirus, it seems highly unlikely he will defend his 155-pound title for the foreseeable future.

Since Henderson isn’t planning on waiting around for too long, he came up with a unique solution that he’d like to see implemented.

“After I take care of Chandler, why doesn’t Patricio give the belt to Patricky because Patricky beat me, I beat Patricio, so give the belt to your big brother,” he suggested. “Give him the belt, let me beat him up for the belt. I think that would satisfy all things right there. I think that is the answer of the conundrum of the Bellator lightweight cluster jam that it is.”
