On his quest to regain the lightweight title he once held, former champion [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] had to have a win this past Friday.

Bellator is back in Connecticut this week with a pair of former lightweight champions atop the bill.

Bellator 243 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Paramount following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former Bellator lightweight champ [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] (20-5 MMA, 17-5 BMMA) takes on ex-UFC and WEC champ [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag] (28-8 MMA, 5-3 BMMA). Chandler is more than a 2-1 favorite in the fight, and he’s got the support of a whopping 12 of our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts in the picks.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Timothy Johnson[/autotag] (13-6 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) will go after his second Bellator heavyweight win on the heels of his upset of 9-1 favorite Tyrell Fortune in February. This time, he’s just a slight underdog against [autotag]Matt Mitrione[/autotag] (13-7 MMA, 4-2 BMMA), but it’s Mitrione with a big 11-3 picks lead.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Myles Jury[/autotag] (18-5 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) is a big favorite against [autotag]Georgi Karakhanyan[/autotag] (29-10-1 MMA, 7-8 BMMA) in their lightweight bout, and he’s got a 10-3 picks lead.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Sabah Homasi[/autotag] (13-8 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) will try to upset [autotag]Curtis Millender[/autotag] (18-5 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) at welterweight. Millender nearly is a 3-1 favorite, and hes got a heavy 11-2 lead in the picks.

Benson Henderson skeptical of Michael Chandler’s ‘knockout warrior’ self-assessment

Before Bellator 243, Benson Henderson explains a recent broadcast spat he had with Michael Chandler.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag] doesn’t have many losses on his resume, but Friday he’ll have the opportunity to redeem one.

Headlining Bellator 243, Henderson will face former Bellator lightweight champion [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] in a rematch of their 2016 bout. That night, Henderson defeated Chandler by split decision.

Wednesday, Henderson (28-8 MMA, 5-5 BMMA) told MMA Junkie he’s never been interested in rematches. However, his loss to Chandler (20-5 MMA, 17-5 BMMA) hasn’t sat well with him. Henderson is convinced the judges scored it wrong.

“I think because it was such a close, controversial split decision, everyone kind of knew there was going to be a rematch,” Henderson said. “Whether I win or lose, I never really want a rematch. We’ve been there. We’ve done that before. Let’s move on. I’m not going to look back. I’m looking forward, but I did think there probably would be a rematch at some point in time. Here we are. After that fight when the judges gave it Chandler, I was like, ‘Oh, I want to get my hands on you again and I’m going to make it hurt.'”

[lawrence-related id=541829,541797,541500]

In a recent promotional video run during Bellator 242, Henderson and Chandler bickered back-and-forth in a split-screen interview hosted by Bellator commentator Mike Goldberg. The argument made the rounds on social media and centered around a prediction Henderson made, saying Chandler would look to use his wrestling.

When reminded about the short spat, Henderson elaborated on where those comments were coming from when he made them.

“The last couple fights he didn’t rely on wrestling, he got knocked out,” Henderson said. “You don’t have the same chin. (When) you have a long career, you test your chin a whole lot. (When) you wow the crowd and yadda, yaddda, yadda, that chin does not stay there for your entire career. I think he was not speaking untruths, but he wasn’t being totally honest with his assessment of a knockout warrior who is still looking for knockouts every fight and all that sort of stuff.”

To the average person, Henderson expects it will seem like he and Chandler are similar fighters to who they were in 2016. However, to the more trained eye, Henderson thinks both him and Chandler are technically improved.

“For the casual fan, you might see the exact person,” Henderson said. “Do I think Chandler has gotten better? Probably, for sure. He’s a consonant professional. He’s always working on his craft and trying to get better. I’m the same way. I’m always trying to get better to improve. To the casual fan, they might see the same thing. But for the students of the game, they see a small difference here. … When you’ve been around for so long, the improvement area gets smaller and smaller.”

[lawrence-related id=541510,541471,539995]

With a win at Bellator 243, Henderson, the former UFC and WEC lightweight king, thinks he’ll take one more step to his ultimate goal of getting title gold wrapped around his waist once again.

“For me, the whole reason that I fight is to be the best on the planet – to have a belt around my waist and be the best on the planet,” Henderson said. “I want that Bellator belt around my waist. I want that belt. It’s not really up to me. It’s up to the higher up. It’s above my pay grade. For me, it was announced officially from Bellator that the winner of this will get a title shot next.

Bellator 243 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card simulcasts on DAZN and Paramount Network after prelims on MMA Junkie.

A free agent after Bellator 243, Michael Chandler keeping options open

Michael Chandler doesn’t know what his future holds – but he knows he has options.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – With the hours counting down to Bellator 243, [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] is on the verge of free agency.

Despite 2018 reports stating Chandler (20-5 MMA, 17-5 BMMA) had explored other options, he told MMA Junkie on Wednesday the post-Bellator 243 dive into free agency exploration will be a first for him.

“I never actually became a free agent,” Chandler said. “It was reported wrong in the media. I’ve never been a free agent. This will be the first time in my career I’ll be a free agent.”

Chandler, 34, has competed for Bellator for almost a decade. One of the faces of their promotion, Chandler has held championship gold on several occasions, had a pair of fights with Eddie Alvarez which put the company on the map, and set numerous promotional records.

As a result, Chandler doesn’t have his sights set on any particular Bellator opponent beyond the task in front of him Friday, former UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag].

“I’m not really worried about whatever happens after this fight,” Chandler said. “This a big fight for me and an important fight for me. I’m a free agent after this fight. As soon as I get done with this, we’ll speak to Bellator. We’ll see if we can come to an agreement and we’ll go from there.

“So I’m not worried about (Bellator lightweight champion) Patricio (Freire). I’m not worried about the title. I’ve held the title three times. I’ve got four of those things sitting on my mantle at home. It means a ton to me to be the Bellator champion. Does it pain me that I’m not the Bellator champion? Of course, it does, but the next best thing is the next best thing for me. It’s winning the fight and then seeing what happens next.”

[lawrence-related id=541500,541510,541471]

Chandler said he’s not worried about how things will play out after this week. Chandler, whose social media pages sports hundreds of thousands of followers, said he knows his worth and his popularity. A day doesn’t go by where Chandler doesn’t feel the public interest.

“This is the fight business,” Chandler said. “This is the hurt business. At the end of the day, I truly believe in my skillset. I truly believe in myself. I believe in what I bring to the table. I’d be just as happy with (any) of 10 scenarios. I’d be just to happy as to already have signed a new deal with Bellator and do a 10-fight deal – retire here at Bellator, get job at the desk with ‘Big John’ and those guys and be a part of the family for the next couple of decades.

“I also am not afraid to take a chance on this fight and take a gamble on myself. I know my worth. I know there’s not a day that goes by where I don’t get reached out to by thousands and thousands of people about the exciting matchups they want to see out there in the world. For me, it’s just business as usual. Friday night, I’ve got to go out there and get my hand raised. That’s what I’m going to do.”

Knowing the stakes, Chandler acknowledged the added pressure of fighting out your contract. His fight vs. Henderson (28-8 MMA, 5-5 BMMA) could increase or decrease his worth based on the outcome.

“Every performance, every time we go out there, we’re laying it on the line,” Chandler said. “Not only are we laying our physical bodies on the line, we’re laying our paycheck on the line, (and) our world ranking on the line. The future of my family (and) the legacy that I want to leave is always on the line. For me, I’ve done nothing but train extremely hard like I’m trying to be the best lightweight in the world. It doesn’t matter if I’m becoming a free agent or I have 10 fights left on my career.”

Spinning Back Clique: Does UFC or Bellator have the biggest main event this weekend?

Check out this week’s edition of “Spinning Back Clique,” which previews a dual event weekend and asks what’s next for Alexander Volkanovski.

Welcome to “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts. This week, Simon Head hosts and is joined by MMA Junkie lead staff reporter John Morgan, as well as MMA Junkie Radio’s “Gorgeous” George and “Goze.”

SHOW TOPICS

  • Despite a huge experience advantage, [autotag]Derek Brunson[/autotag] was a big betting underdog at this past weekend’s UFC on ESPN+ 31 event. Still, the middleweight scored a big stoppage win over a previously undefeated [autotag]Edmen Shahbazyan[/autotag]. So for those that got it wrong, were we too quick to write off Brunson, or was Shabazyan’s hype not justified?
  • Dana White’s Contender Series is back on Tuesday, but it comes at a time when the entire sport is returning to live action. So with a crowded MMA landscape competing for fans’ attention, how well is the prospects-driven show doing entering its fourth season?
  • UFC featherweight champion [autotag]Alexander Volkanovski[/autotag] doesn’t seem too keen on a potential trilogy fight with former titleholder [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag], which is understandable since “Blessed” is winless in the two fights. However, UFC president Dana White isn’t ruling out the possibility. What’s the right move here?
  • After a lengthy hiatus, Bellator is now back in full swing, and this Friday the promotion is offering a tantalizing rematch between superstars [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] and [autotag]Benson Henderson[/autotag]. Meanwhile the UFC counters Saturday night with a heavyweight clash between slugger [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] and submission master [autotag]Aleksei Oleinik[/autotag]. Which is the bigger fight?

For answers to all of those questions, watch Episode 40 of “Spinning Back Clique” above.
