4 former Lions nominated for the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

The MSHOF recognizes contributions at all levels of all sports

Congratulations are in order for four former Detroit Lions players who earned nominations for the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Safety Bennie Blades, offensive tackle Kevin Glover, linebacker Larry Foote and quarterback Drew Henson all appear on the 2023 ballot for the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, or MSHOF. The MSHOF covers all sports and sporting pursuits from all levels, not just the professional ranks. Henson’s cup of coffee with the Lions isn’t why he’s on the nominations list.

“The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame is a nonprofit committed to preserving the State of Michigan’s sports history and celebrating the State’s legendary athletes, coaches and contributors.”

This year’s full ballot is available at michigansportshof.org. It features over 30 nominees across all sorts of sporting contributions.

Bleav in Lions Podcast Featuring Bennie Blades

Bleav in Lions Podcast featuring former Lions FB Bennie Blades

In 1988 a brash, talented Safety out of the University of Miami was drafted third overall in the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and his name was Bennie Blades. Now the Lions Legend has returned to the Detroit Lions fans via a weekly podcast called Bleav in Lions. Bennie has great stories to tell about his time with the Lions from 1988-1996. He loves the fans in Detroit and continues to help young people in Florida on the gridiron as a football coach as well.

Each week he will join the podcast to discuss current topics, review recent games, give his expert opinion on the current team from the eyes of a player that played at a very high level, and tell classic memories of his playing career. The podcast will release on Thursday mornings each week, and on recent episodes, he has told amazing stories about Wayne Fontes, Russ Thomas, and a great one of him and Michael Irvin the Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver trash-talking before the 1991 playoff win for the Lions that you can hear below.

On a recent show, he shared his expert opinion on what makes a great Safety, and then he also takes time to discuss the top three current Lions safeties: Tracy Walker, Duron Harmon, and Will Harris and other Lions position groups as we head into the 2020 Season. The first couple shows also cover his time being recruited where Bo Schembechler almost got him to attend the University of Michigan, his time dominating at the University of Miami where he was a college superstar, behind the scenes story of what the Lions told him before draft day, along with funny moments where Bennie talks about how football just isn’t as tough as it used to be. Please check it out on your favorite podcast platform and tell a fellow Lions fan. I’m the host of the show and have really enjoyed talking with the one and only Bennie Blades on the Bleav in Lions podcast, please check it out and thank you for all the support.
