Bengals fans should be hyped about undrafted weapon joining practice squad

The Bengals offense just got more explosive.

The Cincinnati Bengals raised some eyebrows with recent roster moves at running back, keeping just three on the initial 53-man roster, then cutting Trayveon Williams, only to bring him back later amid a flurry of moves.

But a certain practice squad running back should have the attention of fans, now.

Amid that mentioned flurry of roster moves, the Bengals added former Georgia running back Kendall Milton.

Milton went undrafted to Philadelphia, then routed to Cincinnati after rushing for 1,800-plus yards and 23 scores while averaging better than six yards per carry with the Bulldogs.

While he’s not going to crack the top two of the rotation headlined by Zack Moss and Chase Brown, nor is he likely to get special teams looks over Williams so soon, Milton is an incredibly intriguing long-term fit in Cincinnati.

Now out of the Joe Mixon era, the Bengals will have a long-term eye on the position. Brown could be one major part of that, but Moss is already 27 years old and only under contract through 2025.

If Milton can join the Bengals program in the right ways in the coming weeks and months, he’ll give the staff something to think about long-term.

Of course, the highlights he showed in college help explain why the Bengals went after him after final cuts in the first place:

Bengals make flurry of roster moves with practice squad, injured reserve

The Bengals made lots of roster moves after the waiver wire process.

The Cincinnati Bengals hit on a series of roster moves on Thursday after final cuts and the waiver wire process.

There, the team re-signed running back Trayveon Williams, who was cut the day prior to make room for the team’s only waiver wire claim.

To make room, they shifted rookie defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson to injured reserve.

The Bengals also expanded on their initial practice squad, hitting the 16-man limit by adding the following names:

  • –G Tashawn Manning
  • –HB Kendall Milton
  • –DT Justin Rogers
  • –DE Isaiah Thomas

Those are all new arrivals from outside the team in various capacities, with Rogers’ arrival previously reported.

The Bengals were thin along the interior of the defensive line after announcing the initial 53-man roster, so it’s reasonable to expect that Rogers is somebody they might call up on gameday for depth.

Jackson is technically on IR-return, joining former first-round edge Myles Murphy and starting punter Brad Robbins. Williams returning to the active roster means they still have just three running backs on the 53, with him still slotting in behind Zack Moss and Chase Brown.

Bengals add former Cowboys DT to practice squad

The Bengals add another notable name to the practice squad.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced just 12 players on their initial practice squad on Wednesday after final cuts.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Bengals will add a 13th with defensive tackle Justin Rogers.

Rogers, a seventh-round rookie selected 244th overall by the Cowboys this year, surprisingly, wasn’t one of the names on Dallas’ practice squad after final cuts.

The Bengals loading up on the defensive interior makes sense with rookie
McKinnley Jackson working his way back from an injury. The team already went lighter there on the initial 53, too.

Defensive line help as a whole has been a theme for the Bengals over the last two days — the team’s only claim on the waiver wire helped them fill out depth on the edge now that Myles Murphy is on injured reserve.

Bengals announce 2024 practice squad after final cuts

The Bengals have revealed the 2024 practice squad list.

The Cincinnati Bengals revealed the current members of the 2024 practice squad on Wednesday after the waiver-wire rush.

There, some familiar names round out a big list of players, with veterans and breakouts alike making the 12-man list.

Here is the current list:

  • CB Nate Brooks
  • WR Cole Burgess
  • OT Devin Cochran
  • DT Domenique Davis
  • CB Jalen Davis
  • TE Cam Grandy
  • LB Shaka Heyward
  • C Trey Hill
  • WR Shedrick Jackson
  • S PJ Jules
  • WR Kendric Pryor
  • QB Logan Woodside

The Bengals can add four more players to this list, with the 12 above already spending training camp with the team this summer. The Bengals claimed one player on the waiver wire and released Trayveon Williams, so the veteran running back could end up on this list.

As always, some housekeeping: Teams can have up to six veterans on the practice squad without any limitations. Those players with less than four accrued seasons were exposed to the waiver wire after being cut and reverted to free agency if they passed through without being claimed. Veterans with four-plus years accrued were immediately free agents. Players on the practice squad can be placed on the gameday roster three times, with the fourth time requiring they be signed to the 53-man roster. Only two practice squad players may be eligible to play on game day.

Bengals claim one player on waiver wire after final cuts

The Bengals make a claim on the waiver wire after final cuts.

The Cincinnati Bengals predictably used the waiver wire to get some reinforcements along the defense line on Wednesday.

Cincinnati used their standing on the post-final cuts wire to put a claim in on defensive end K.J. Henry, formerly of the Washington Commanders.

A fifth-round pick in 2023, Henry hailed from Clemson, where current Bengals defensive line coach Marion Hobby used to be, too, making for the obvious connection.

The Bengals needed all the help they could get on the edge after final cuts with former first-rounder Myles Murphy on injured reserve alongside Cam Sample and with Jeff Gunter retiring.

Now, the only question is whether the Bengals use the next week or so to again add to the position in the name of keeping a deep rotation over the first month of the season.

Predicting Bengals’ 16-man practice squad

What might the practice squad look like for the Bengals after final cuts?

The Cincinnati Bengals will tweak the roster over the course of the next week in the wake of final cuts.

Zac Taylor and Co. will look over the waiver wire and available free agents after so many players leaguewide shook loose. Perhaps they’ll even consider trades.

And in the process, they’ll formulate a 16-player practice squad. These days, this practice squad can include six veterans without restrictions, too.

Here’s a look at what that practice squad might look like:

  • QB Logan Woodside
  • DT Carlos Davis
  • WR Cole Burgess
  • WR Shedrick Jackson
  • WR Kendric Pryor
  • CB Lance Robinson
  • HB Elijah Collins
  • DT Travis Bell
  • S PJ Jules
  • CB Jalen Davis
  • LB Aaron Casey
  • DE Justin Blazek
  • G Eric Miller
  • WR Hakeem Butler
  • RB Samaje Perine (recently cut in Denver)
  • DE Khalid Kareem (recently cut in Chicago)

Bengals final cuts feature some notable surprises

Some big items of note after the Bengals made final cuts.

The Cincinnati Bengals cut the 90-man roster down to 53 by Tuesday’s deadline and in the process, threw out a couple of surprises.

Here’s a quick rundown of some eyebrow-raising items from the list of cuts:

Youth Movement: The Bengals kept all 10 rookies from the draft class and two undrafted free agents. None are without merit, as even seventh-rounders like Matt Lee emerged as possible long-term contributors. Sixth-round tight end Tanner McLachlan even forced them to keep five at the position.

Hobbled DL: The Bengals only have four healthy edge rushers before any waiver wire claims or free agents. First-rounder product Myles Murphy got shifted to injured reserve, confirming he’ll miss at least a month. Rookie McKinnley Jackson on the interior is also trying to work his way back from an injury.

Kirkland Emerges: Jaxson Kirkland, undrafted a year ago, forced the likes of Jackson Carman off the roster. He’s one of nine linemen, which says much about what they see in him as a depth option.

Versatile Secondary: One glance-over of the secondary shows something really interesting — four of the five corners can play the slot. And a few of the corners — like Mike Hilton and Dax Hill — can play a safety role or have in the past.

Punter: The undrafted Ryan Rehkow runs the show, at least for now, with Brad Robbins shifted to injured reserve.

Cincinnati will form a practice squad over the next day or so, with waiver wire claims going in on Wednesday, where the Bengals have an interesting spot in the waiver wire order.

Bengals’ first reported release on final cuts day isn’t a shocker

The Bengals make an expected move at final cuts.

The first reported roster move for the Cincinnati Bengals on final cuts day lands in the “expected” column.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, center Trey Hill was informed of his release from the team.

That means late-round rookie breakout Matt Lee has likely made the final roster.

A success story in his own right as a 2021 sixth-round pick out of Georgia, Hill was the backup for Ted Karras in recent years but might’ve needed a change to guard in order to stick longer. He could still return on the practice squad.

Lee has been a stunning riser for the Bengals, even getting some big praise from Karras himself after a strong rookie summer.

Here’s our Bengals final cuts roster tracker.

Bengals waive Jackson Carman, 11 total players after final preseason game

The Bengals trimmed the roster with some cuts.

The Cincinnati Bengals waived 11 players after their preseason finale, announcing the moves on Friday.

Cincinnati let the following players go:

  • –WR Hakeem Butler
  • –HB Noah Cain
  • –OT Jackson Carman
  • –DE Andre Carter
  • –LB Aaron Casey
  • –S Michael Dowell
  • –CB Allan George
  • –WR Kwamie Lassiter II
  • –QB Rocky Lombardi
  • –G Eric Miller
  • –DT Joshua Pryor

Of the names there, Jackson Carman is by far the biggest. The former second-round pick couldn’t carve out a starting job over a handful of years in Cincinnati and was demoted to the fourth team over the course of the last two preseason games.

Wideout Hakeem Butler was a big-name signing for the team during training camp, but he couldn’t break through the stacked depth chart. Similarily, Lassiter had another fantastic summer, yet loses to the numbers game.

The undrafted Aaron Casey was one of two guys the Bengals paid up extra for after the draft, yet the other — Maema Njongmeta — was one of the biggest breakouts of training camp.
