What Notre Dame is getting as Kevin Austin returns

Notre Dame’s passing game hasn’t turned many heads early in 2020. Will Kevin Austin’s return to the lineup change that?

Entering the 2020 season Notre Dame’s wide receiver corps were viewed a lot like many see faith.  Despite not be able to actually see something, in this case production from the key cogs in a Notre Dame uniform, the belief was there that the group had a chance to be special.

It’s early and obviously a strange season that was pre-dated with truly unique circumstances, but through two games the receiving corps hasn’t exactly lived up to their pre-season billing.

That could start to change Saturday as No. 5 Notre Dame welcomes Florida State to South Bend however as the Irish will be getting what was supposed to be their best receiver in 2020 back to their roster in Kevin Austin, who broke his foot very early in fall camp.

The 6-2, 210 pound receiver has put up only five receptions for 90 yards in his Notre Dame career but could provide the game-breaking ability the position has lacked early this season.

“He’s explosive, rangy, has out standing ball skills and can open up the game as he can take the top off of coverages,” Brian Kelly said of Austin on Monday, “He can make a catch and go the distance and win one-on-one match-ups.”

Not that they’ve had to throw the ball over the yard two games in but Notre Dame has thrown for just over 200 yards per game and completed just one touchdown pass on the year.

Brian Kelly closed his thoughts on Austin by saying what quarterback Ian Book as well as Notre Dame fans all across the country are thinking:

“It will be nice to get him on the field for us.”

It’s also worth noting that graduate student Ben Skowronek will return to the lineup as well after playing just one half of football against Duke before suffering a hamstring injury that kept him out of the South Florida contest.

Notre Dame Football: Injury updates ahead of Florida State game

Brian Kelly met the media on Thursday and gave updates on a few players that have missed time so far this season.

Notre Dame isn’t playing again this weekend as it was a pre-determined bye week, their first of two this fall, but Brian Kelly is letting it be known that the Fighting Irish are starting to get healthy.

Kelly met the media on Thursday and gave updates on a few players that have missed time so far this season.

At receiver Ben Skowronek has missed all but one half of football this season as he’s been dealing with a hamstring injury he suffered in the opener against Duke.  Kelly says that he’s a full-go.

Kelly also added that star sophomore free safety Kyle Hamilton is cleared for takeoff after Hamilton sprained his ankle in the Duke game and was forced to miss the South Florida contest.

Finally, Kelly gave an update on a player should help boost production for a position group that desperately needs it early on in 2020.  Kevin Austin, who broke his foot at the start of fall camp, will be cleared for the Florida State game “in some manner” on October 10 according to Kelly.

Now does that mean he’ll simply dress and go through warm ups after going through practice next week?  Or does it mean he’ll be a full-go and ready to potentially start for Notre Dame when currently win-less Florida State comes to town in nine days?

That we don’t know but the good news is Austin is healing relatively quickly and with this news, you’d assume he’d be a full-go when things get more difficult against Louisville and Pitt in the two games following Florida State.

Notre Dame Football: Monday Injury Update

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly gave an update on the latest in regards to the Kyle Hamilton and Ben Skowronek injuries Monday.

Despite some injuries and players being ruled unavailable on Saturday we saw Notre Dame roll South Florida 52-0 in a game that was over seemingly seconds after the Fighting Irish team bus safely pulled into Notre Dame Stadium.

It probably won’t be as easy of task on Saturday when the Irish hit the road for the first time in 2020 to take on Wake Forest, but Notre Dame will still be a sizable favorite.  What about those injured players, though?  Will any of them be making a return?

Brian Kelly gave the latest update on a few of the injured Irish on Monday.

Wide Receiver Ben Skowronek (hamstring):

  • Upgraded to day-to-day
  • Was put through run progression Monday morning
  • Will be put through more football drill work Tuesday
  • If Tuesday goes well and he feels good and not overly sore after they’ll discuss with the trainers his return to practice

Safety Kyle Hamilton (ankle):

  • “He looks pretty good”
  • Expected to ramp it up and get into some practice later this week
  • From listening live it didn’t seem like Kelly was in any rush to get Hamilton on the field Saturday

Time will tell what ultimately happens with both of these but with an 0-2 Wake Forest team waiting on Saturday I would be somewhat surprised to see either Skowronek or Hamilton rush to return before a bye week and ahead of Florida State coming to South Bend.

Notre Dame Football: Latest injury news on Hamilton, Lenzy and Skowronek

Notre Dame was bit hard by the injury bug in their season opener. See the latest news in regards to those injuries now.

Although Notre Dame got out of their season opener with a 27-13 win over Duke on Saturday, it wasn’t without some issues.

Sure, some had to do with the offense that was slow to go early on, but the biggest issue and scare came in the injury department.

The news of that came early when play-making speedster Braden Lenzy didn’t warm up with the first or second team offenses.  It turns out Lenzy had a hamstring injury that kept him out of action.

“Lenzy wasn’t 100% and you’re not going to use a speed guy like him if he’s not 100%” Brian Kelly said on Monday.

Kelly also provided optimism that Lenzy would be at or near that 100% and return to action on Tuesday.

The biggest scare of an injury came on a bit of friendly-fire when Kyle Hamilton took a shot to the knee in Saturday’s game.  The star safety went down in what looked like a ton of pain and did not return with an ankle injury.

Kelly offered no guarantees on if the star sophomore will return to action against South Florida this weekend but seems to think Notre Dame dodged a bullet with the extent of the injury.

“He’s better, he’s in a walking boot,” Kelly said, “the scan yesterday came back clean but we’ll keep him in a walking boot until Wednesday and it’s a pain management thing but you know Kyle and know he wants to play”.

With the way that injury looked in the moment, the fact that Hamilton doesn’t look like he’s going to be out for the year or for even the next month feels fortunate for a Notre Dame secondary that is still very much learning to play togehter.

Kelly also noted that receiver Ben Skowronek will likely be out against South Florida with the hamstring injury he suffered early on Saturday.

Notre Dame beat Duke to start 2020 off right. Here are five quick takeaways from the opening day victory for the Irish.

It was weird, it was different, it was far from pretty but at the end of the afternoon it was a Week One win over Duke as Notre Dame recorded their first official win as a member of the ACC.

There was good, there was bad and there was ugly but most importantly the Irish started the season with a victory on an ugly day in South Bend.

Five quick takeaways from the season opening 27-13 win over Duke.
