Check out these highlights of new Broncos QB Ben DiNucci

The Broncos are bringing in Ben DiNucci to serve as a backup quarterback. Here are his highlights from college, the NFL and the XFL.

The Denver Broncos are bringing in Ben DiNucci to serve as a backup quarterback in 2023. At the time of this writing, the deal is not yet official but it is expected to be signed on Tuesday.

DiNucci will get an opportunity to serve as the Broncos’ third-string quarterback this summer behind QB1 Russell Wilson and QB2 Jarrett Stidham. DiNucci will be joining his second NFL team and his third professional team.

DiNucci, 26, previously spent time with the Dallas Cowboys (2020-2021) and Seattle Sea Dragons (2023) before landing in Denver. Today, we’re taking a quick look back at the QB’s career highlights so far.

Broncos cut 4 players to make room for XFL tryout signings and Kareem Jackson

The Broncos cut four players on Monday and officially signed safety Kareem Jackson.

The Denver Broncos are expected to officially sign two XFL players on Tuesday and they parted ways with four other players on Monday to make room for new arrivals.

The Broncos waived wide receiver Dallas Daniels, cornerback Darrious Gaines, tight Kris Leach and running back Emanuel Wilson, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson. All four players signed with the team as college free agents after the draft.

Two of the players were cut to make room for quarterback Ben DiNucci and running back Jacques Patrick, who both agreed to terms with the team on Sunday.

Playing for the Seattle Sea Dragons, DiNucci led the XFL in passing yards (2,671) and ranked second in touchdown passes (20) this spring. Patrick ranked second in the XFL with 443 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 10 games with the San Antonio Brahmas.

A third cut was made to make room for safety Kareem Jackson, who agreed to a one-year deal last week and officially re-signed on Monday. The fourth cut was made to make room for a yet-to-be-signed player. A good guess might be pass rusher Jake Martin, who was cut last week.

At the time of this writing, Denver officially has three open spots on the 90-man offseason roster, with two of them set to go to DiNucci and Patrick. Time will tell if Martin is the third.

Broncos signing XFL quarterback Ben Dinucci

The Broncos are adding more depth to the quarterback room by bringing in Ben Dinucci.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms on a contract with quarterback Ben Dinucci, his agent, Joe Linta, announced on Twitter on Sunday.

Dinucci will have to pass a physical examination on Monday before the signing becomes official. The Broncos will have to also make a corresponding move to make room for the QB on the 90-man offseason roster.

Sean Payton roasts Broncos tryout QB Ben DiNucci

Sean Payton jokingly told Ben DiNucci he might be able to get a job at Walmart after the quarterback threw an interception at minicamp.

Story update: The Broncos are signing Ben DiNucci. Clearly, Sean Payton’s good-natured ribbing was all in good fun. See our original post below.

Sean Payton’s got jokes.

The Denver Broncos held a rookie minicamp practice on Saturday featuring their draft picks, undrafted free agent signings, last year’s practice squad players and more than a dozen tryout players.

One of the players that tried out over the weekend was quarterback Ben DiNucci, who spent time with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020-2022 before starring in the XFL this spring.

One of DiNucci’s passes during Saturday’s practice was intercepted by linebacker Drew Sanders, who was a third-round pick in April. After practice, Payton teased the QB publicly for the interception by retelling a comment he made to DiNucci.

“Unfortunately for Ben DiNucci, it was his first interception and there was more to that interception if you looked at it,” Payton said. “It was good play by Sanders and it was right in front of Greg Penner. I was telling Greg before practice how this Ben DiNucci was doing well.

“I told Ben — I said, ‘You know, he owns Walmart. If it doesn’t work out here, I’m sure there’s a greeting opportunity somewhere at one of his local stores.’ It was good play by Drew.”

Boom, roasted.

Penner, of course, is the son-in-law of Broncos majority owner Rob Walton, the billionaire heir of Walton. Penner is now a co-owner of the club and he acts as the day-to-day owner as chief executive officer.

The fact that Payton would make such a comment about DiNucci in a playful manner might actually be a good sign for the QB’s chances of getting an invite to training camp. It seems like the kind of joking comment Payton would make to a player he likes rather than a cutting criticism of a camp arm.

If Denver does plan to sign DiNucci, the team will have to wait until Monday — that’s when XFL players become eligible to sign with NFL teams for 2023.

Sean Payton gives Ben DiNucci Wal-Mart career advice after rookie minicamp interception

Broncos head coach Sean Payton had some snappy career advice for quarterback Ben DiNucci after a minicamp interception.

New Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is clearly excited about his first rookie minicamp since 2021. The former New Orleans Saints head coach watched his third-round rookie linebacker Drew Sanders make an impressive interception touchdown of a Ben DiNucci pass. Dinucci, the ex-Dallas Cowboys quarterback fresh off a season with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons, didn’t quite live up to Payton’s positive talk before practice to new Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner, who is also the chairman of Wal-Mart.

As Payton (jokingly) said after practice, perhaps DiNucci has an alternate career path.

Unfortunately for Ben DiNucci, it was his first interception and there was more to that interception if you looked at it. it was good play by Sanders and it was right in front of Greg Penner. I was telling Greg before practice how this Ben DiNucci was doing well. I told Ben — I said, ‘You know, he owns Walmart. If it doesn’t work out here, I’m sure there’s a greeting opportunity somewhere at one of his local stores.’ It was good play by Drew, [he had] a good break.”

Ouch! Well, DiNucci has a bit of time to get things right before he puts on the blue vest.

QB seemingly picks CFL contract over Broncos tryout

Judd Erickson was invited to tryout at Broncos rookie minicamp but he signed a contract with a CFL team instead.

Football is a business, and sometimes the smart decision isn’t an easy one.

Last week, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that former San Diego quarterback Judd Erickson was invited to try out at Denver Broncos rookie minicamp. He is a local prospect from Highlands Ranch who started his college football career at Colorado State.

Erickson, 24, would have faced extremely long odds to receive a contract offer from Denver after the minicamp. He was likely invited simply as a “camp arm” for the young receivers getting reps at practice.

Instead of accepting the Broncos’ invite to try out at camp, Erickson chose to accept a contract offer from the Canadian Football League. After trying out for the BC Lions last week, Erickson signed with the CFL team on Monday.

It’s an understandable decision. While playing in the NFL is the dream of every young QB, Erickson had to choose between likely spending just one weekend in Denver or signing a deal with immediate pay in the CFL. He might also face long odds to make BC’s roster, but they will be much better than Erickson’s odds with the Broncos.

Denver currently has three quarterbacks on the roster — Russell Wilson, Jarrett Stidham and Jarrett Guarantano — and they have Ben DiNucci and Hunter Raquet set to try out at rookie minicamp this weekend.

Broncos’ updated quarterback depth chart following the NFL draft

No surprises on our projected quarterback depth chart for the Broncos following the NFL draft.

After not selecting a quarterback in the 2023 NFL draft, there are no changes to our projected quarterback depth chart for the Denver Broncos as the team prepares to begin OTAs this month.

QB1: Russell Wilson is coming off the worst season of his career, but the team is hopeful new coach Sean Payton can help him return to his old form in 2023.

QB2: Jarrett Stidham signed a two-year deal with Denver during free agency, replacing former backup QB Brett Rypien. The Broncos view Stidham as a quality backup with future starter upside.

QB3: Jarrett Guarantano joined the team last December and he is now poised to enter the summer as the third-string QB behind Wilson and Stidham.

At the time of this writing, Denver has not signed any undrafted free agent quarterbacks, but the team has invited rookie Judd Erickson and XFL QB Ben DiNucci to try out at rookie minicamp next week.

The biggest potential shakeup in the team’s QB room in the foreseeable future would be DiNucci impressing at rookie camp and taking Guarantano’s roster spot. Going into the summer, Wilson and Stidham are locked in as the top-two QBs on the depth chart.

Broncos invite XFL quarterback Ben DiNucci to rookie minicamp

After leading the XFL in passing this spring, quarterback Ben DiNucci has been invited by the Broncos to try out at rookie minicamp.

The Denver Broncos have invited Seattle Sea Dragons quarterback Ben DiNucci to try out at their rookie minicamp, the XFL announced Wednesday.

DiNucci (6-2, 222 pounds) played college football at Pittsburgh and James Madison before being selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft. He dressed for three games as a rookie and started one game as an injury fill-in that season.

After spending the 2021 season on the Cowboys’ practice squad, DiNucci failed to make their active roster or practice squad in 2022. After a year away from football, the 26-year-old QB joined the XFL this spring.

DiNucci led the XFL with 2,671 passing yards this year and ranked second in the league with 20 touchdowns. He also led the XFL with 13 interceptions.

DiNucci is one of three known XFL players who have received minicamp invites from the Broncos. He is also the second known quarterback, joining San Diego’s Judd Erickson. We are tracking all of the team’s minicamp invites on this page.

Would Cowboys bring back QB Ben DiNucci to save late draft pick?

From @ToddBrock24f7: Ben DiNucci has lit up the XFL this season. Does bringing him back to Dallas make more sense than using a late draft pick on a true rookie?

It’s been widely speculated that the Cowboys may be looking at a quarterback in the late rounds of this weekend’s draft. While Dak Prescott’s starting job obviously isn’t in danger, it remains a passer-driven league; constantly re-stocking the shelves at the position helps ensure that the offense is in the best hands possible in case of emergency. And a little camp competition for the QB2 and QB3 roster spots is always a good thing.

A few names seem to keep popping up who may fit the bill for Dallas in 2023. Georgia’s Stetson Bennett, UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell might be guys to watch, while prospects Clayton Tune of Houston and Max Duggan of TCU would likely create some extra buzz among in-state fans.

But is the best young quarterback option already playing pro ball?

Ben DiNucci last played for the Cowboys in the 2022 preseason. Himself a former seventh-round draft choice, he was one of the final roster cuts of that summer, waived in favor of Will Grier, who took over the third-stringer’s role in Dallas.

Since then, DiNucci’s thrown for over 2,600 yards in 10 games to finish as the XFL’s regular-season passing leader. On Sunday, he tossed three touchdowns and ran for another to put the Seattle Sea Dragons in that league’s postseason. The XFL ride isn’t over yet for DiNucci, but he’ll be eligible to sign with an NFL squad as soon as Seattle’s playoff runs ends.

Given his performance over the first season of the revamped league, it’s almost certain he’ll get the opportunity.

For Dallas, the question is about who presents more upside: a college kid coming in and learning everything for the first time, or someone who has already spent the past three offseasons and two full campaigns with the club and even started a primetime game?

Is it better to hope for lightning in a bottle? Or look at DiNucci’s XFL stint as part of his overall growth, a valuable side gig that could pay dividends within a longer-term Cowboys experiment?

True, DiNucci went just 21-of-40 in his only Cowboys start, a forgettable 23-9 loss in Philadelphia on a Sunday night as a wide-eyed rookie.

“I feel like that wasn’t me out there,” he said a few months later.

He didn’t start again for Dallas, and his opportunities were limited to preseason contests. But even after getting cut, DiNucci maintains a strong connection with Dallas that many Cowboys fans and players have publicly worn on their sleeves. Or heads.

Shortly after being drafted, he became co-owner of True Brvnd, the streetwear manufacturer who makes the “SALLAD” hats that have shown up on everyone from Prescott and Tony Pollard to Trevon Diggs and CeeDee Lamb… not to mention the everyday consumers who regularly wipe out the inventory of new hats as they become available on the company’s website.

The logo is actually the word “DALLAS” presented upside-down, a nod to the way the whole world felt in the spring of 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even eight months after his release by the Cowboys, DiNucci remains one of the brand’s most visible ambassadors… not to mention a curiosity for many followers of the team who still consider him one of their own.

His prolific XFL season has now perhaps flipped DiNucci’s image as a player with some segment of the fanbase. Whether it’s also been enough to warrant a second chance with the NFL team that drafted him remains to be seen.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

It was a chance meeting in an elevator that perhaps first put him on the Cowboys’ radar in 2020. The James Madison football team was in Frisco for the FCS title game, and DiNucci got on an elevator at the Dukes’ hotel, attached to the Cowboys’ facility at The Star.

Head coach Mike McCarthy was already on board, waiting for his floor.

DiNucci introduced himself, a fellow Pittsburgher, and mentioned their shared connections. McCarthy’s brother had coached DiNucci in middle school basketball, and DiNucci’s position coach at JMU had also worked under McCarthy in Green Bay.

That may have tipped the scales a few months later when the Cowboys were about to make their final pick in the 2020 draft. It may have earned DiNucci a longer look after his first NFL start fizzled in Philly. And it may have made his release at the end of 2022’s camp- after some glimmer-filled preseason moments- a tough decision.

He’s now 26, just 11 months older than one of the project quarterbacks- Bennett- the Cowboys could be considering in the draft. One of the big differences, of course, is that DiNucci is a known commodity who’s spent time in the Cowboys system, knows many of the current players, is familiar to the coaching staff, and would free up that late-round draft pick to use on a different position.

It’s worth noting, though, that this time around, the Cowboys may not be the only NFL team interested to see how much DiNucci has grown as a passer.

But if the Cowboys do decide to make him an offer that brings him back to Dallas, it won’t be because they already know him. It won’t be because of an elevator ride or a trendy ball cap. It won’t be a reunion made for sentimental reasons. It will be his 10 games (and counting) of live-fire experience with the Sea Dragons that did it.

That, and the whole not-having-to-spend-a-draft-pick thing.
