Murray State vs Belmont Game Preview

Why Belmont Will Win

The Bruins lost to Murray State 82-60 back in mid-January, lost to Morehead State a few days later, and they’ve been on fire ever since.

On a ten-game winning streak, they’re cranking up the offense with lots and lots and lots of passes for easy baskets.

Belmont leads the nation in assists, the offense is the best in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring, and not shockingly, it’s among the best in the nation in field goal percentage averaging close to 50% from the field.

Murray State was able to limit those passes and extra plays the first time around, and not shockingly it was one of the team’s worst shooting days of the season.

Keep the ball moving on the Racers – it is possible – and this will be a fight.

But …

Why Murray State Will Win

Murray State has won 16 straight since losing at Auburn for a reason.

Belmont comes up with a ton of steals and takeaways, but Murray State doesn’t turn the ball over.

The Bruins don’t get a lot of offensive rebounds because they shoot so well, but they’re going to struggle on the defensive side. Overall they’re good on the glass, but Murray State out rebounds teams by close to eight per game.

The Racer defense is the best in the OVC, and the team still won the first time around even after allowing Belmont to hit 41% from the field.

What’s Going To Happen

Belmont is playing well, and it should be able to shoot well enough to keep this close throughout. However, Murray State is just too good overall, especially at home.

UT Martin was able to keep things within ten points back in late January, but that was about it. The Racers aren’t just 14-0 in CFSB; they’re dominant.

It’ll take a while to get there, but the run will come late to pull away.

LSU basketball faces huge home test vs Belmont

LSU takes on Belmont in a huge home game on Monday

LSU should be ranked already, but a win over the Belmont Bruins would certainly put the Tigers inside the top 25.

The Bruins are 3-1 on the young season after Friday’s 97-78 win on the road at Kennesaw State. Belmont shot 53 percent and made 10 three-pointers. Nick Muszynski led Belmont with 25 points, with Will Richard scoring 17 and Michael Shanks 16.

Belmont returns 97 percent of its offensive production and minutes from last season and the Bruins Have earned wins in recent years over SEC teams Vanderbilt, Georgia, Alabama, and Missouri. This is a team that knows how to shoot the basketball and could go toe-to-toe with LSU, as the Tigers themselves play sound offense.

In LSU’s 85-46 win over McNeese on Thursday, both Darius Days and Tari Eason had double-doubles. Days posted his active SEC career leading 17th double against the Cowboys while Eason has his third in the first four games of the season. Xavier Pinson and Eric Gaines combined for 14 assists in the win.

Badger moments: Wisconsin stakes its claim vs Belmont in 2011

Wisconsin regroups

The ugly game.

The unmentionable game.

The horror show game.

Whatever you want to call it, it was unwatchable and hard to talk about. It was a game every Wisconsin fan and player and coach wanted to forget… but it was there, and it was real.

Penn State 36, Wisconsin 33.

The ugliest college basketball game many of us ever watched — college basketball’s equivalent of the 2008 Sun Bowl game in which Oregon State defeated Pittsburgh, 3-0 — scarred our retinas and made us want to soak in a hot tub for an hour to get rid of the stench.

Wisconsin had to carry the memory of that game — in which the Badgers went 2 of 21 on 3-pointers — into the 2011 NCAA Tournament. UW also knew as it entered the 2011 NCAA Tournament that it had failed to make the Sweet 16 its previous two trips, in 2009 and 2010. There was a job to do, and the Badgers had to reset their minds if they wanted to get it done.

Very clearly, they put that nightmarish shooting performance behind them. They turned the page from Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament. That was more than enough for them in a convincing 72-58 win over the Belmont Bruins in Tucson.

Belmont was then — and still is — a sexy underdog pick at the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins run great offensive sets and have a Princeton-like vibe about them. Yet, the Bruins have never been able to pull off their big March upset. Wisconsin was able to turn them back nine years ago.

The foremost story from this win was Wisconsin’s 12-of-22 shooting line on threes. The Badgers went from the Penn State nightmare to a dream game against Belmont. The kicker: Belmont coach Rick Byrd didn’t even think his team flunked on defense.

“I thought we defended in this game about as good as we can defend,” Byrd said. “And I’d like to see how many of those were in the last six seconds of the shot clock and how many were contested.”

Jordan Taylor hit 5 of 9 threes, and five other Badgers hit at least one 3-point shot, to give UW 36 points from long distance. Taylor finished with 21 points while Jon Leuer scored 22. Wisconsin finished 20 of 40, a clean 50 percent, from the field, and hit 20 of 25 free throws in a superb offensive performance. Few teams ever did beat Bo Ryan when his players were shooting at a high percentage. Belmont found this out the hard way in the Big Dance against the Badgers.
