Scott Coker honored to host first major MMA event in France with Bellator Paris

Bellator made history on Saturday with the first major MMA event in France.

Bellator president Scott Coker is proud to have made history on Saturday.

Coker is grateful after hosting the first major mixed martial arts event in France with Bellator 248 and Bellator Europe 10, which went down at the AccorHotels Arena in Paris.

The long quest to open the doors to the sport in France finally culminated in legalization in January, enabling organizations to take their operations into an untapped market.

“It was quite long, but I think the people around the world got to see some great fights in France,” Coker told reporters following Bellator Paris. “We’re the first ever major organization to come here. It was the ‘final frontier’ I call it, and it was a huge success tonight.

“Obviously to be the first major organization in France to promote here and bring MMA to this country really it was quite an honor. There was other organizations that wanted to be here and for the (country) to work with us first that says a big statement in its self.”

Coker deemed the evening a success and sees it as a big victory for the company.

“This was a very special occasion,” Coker said. “It was a difficult process, but I’m glad we did it. It’s such a victory that in the history books of MMA we will be down as the first major MMA show in the country of France.”

Coker said the two events were the promotion’s last European cards for the year. He expects to be back in France sometime next year, depending on how the ongoing global pandemic plays out in the long term.

“This was our last fight in Europe this year and we’ll be back next year at some point,” Coker explained. “We already have a date for AccorHotels Arena but we’re going to see how the COVID situation goes. We have a tremendous amount of foreign and European athletes that we need to keep busy so whether they fight here (in Europe) or they fight in the states we’re going to keep these guys busy.”

Bellator Europe 10 video: Check out Yves Landu’s wild KO knee — and wilder dance moves

Paris native Yves Landu couldn’t have picked a better moment to make a big splash than on Bellator’s first French show.

[autotag]Yves Landu[/autotag]’s nickname is “You Know,” and as The Notorious B.I.G. once said, “If you don’t know, now you know.”

The Paris native couldn’t have picked a better spot to make waves, as he made his Bellator debut on Saturday night during the company’s first-ever event in his hometown.

Livening up what at times had been a less-than-thrilling undercard, Landu (15-8 MMA. 1-0 BMMA) landed an absolute bull’s-eye of a flying knee to the forehead of Terry Brazier (11-3 MMA, 1-3 BMMA), ending their lightweight fight at the 2:18 mark of the opening round.

That gives Landu, who came into the bout a +260 underdog, four wins in his past five fights, and we suspect that his first appearance in the Bellator cage won’t be his last.

After the fight, Landu was clearly in the mood to celebrate:

Cheick Kongo thought he’d retire before France legalized MMA, grateful to fight on home soil

At 45, Cheick Kongo wasn’t sure he’d ever get to compete in his native France and is grateful to headline Bellator Europe 10.

[autotag]Cheick Kongo[/autotag] wasn’t sure if he’d ever get to compete on home soil.

Born in France, Kongo (30-12-2 MMA, 12-2 BMMA) has competed in more than 40 professional fights and will finally make the walk to the cage in his home country this Saturday when he rematches Timothy Johnson in the main event of Bellator Europe 10 at Accor Arena in Paris.

Earlier this year in January, France legalized mixed martial arts, making it a target for Bellator. As soon as France passed legislation, Coker issued a statement expressing his enthusiasm.

Speaking at Bellator 248 virtual media day, Kongo, 45, said he expected to be retired by the time MMA was legalized in France, but the heavyweight powerhouse is still trucking. He hasn’t lost since 2015 and most recently contended for the heavyweight championship last September against Ryan Bader, but the fight was ruled a no contest after Bader accidentally poked Kongo in the eye.

“It’s great,” Kongo said Wednesday on getting to compete in France. “It’s one of the final steps around the world for MMA, regulation and legalization of the sport, so now French citizens can enjoy the fights to assist on live to the sports events, and now they can train and be prepared for the event with all the support, sponsors and federation in France.”

He continued, “Sure, the plan was to be retired way before. After that, I got some wins and more gas in the tank to keep performing, so it was great. And now on Saturday we have the first event in France legalized, and it’s amazing. I was expecting that moment sooner, but today at 45 years old, it’s kind of a blessing – a bit of frustration because of the pandemic. All the crowd won’t be able to fill up the facility, but it’s a good start. Step by step.”

Kongo knocked out Johnson (14-6 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) in their first fight in just 68 seconds in 2018 at Bellator 208. Despite the quick finish, he’s not taking Johnson lightly.

“Everybody changes,” Kongo said. “Everybody changes with a bit more confidence. … For that bout, I just have to stay aware, try to be aggressive, let him come in the game, and just reply as I have to do. Nothing else.”

IMMAF president wishes Bellator luck ahead of Paris event, hopes to ‘see MMA flourish in France’

IMMAF president Kerrith Brown has issued a statement of support to Bellator ahead of their historic dual-card event in Paris, France.

Bellator’s historic dual-card event in Paris on Saturday night marks not only a landmark moment for the sport in France, it also opens the doors for MMA to prosper and grow in a country that has already produced a host of notable fighters, despite the sport’s previous ban.

Bellator 248 and Bellator Europe 10 will take place at the Accor Arena in Paris Saturday night and, ahead of the event, IMMAF president Kerrith Brown issued a statement to MMA Junkie wishing the promotion all the best for their upcoming show.

“IMMAF wishes the best of luck to Bellator for their historic event in Paris this weekend, as we celebrate the opening of doors to MMA in France,” he began. “Together with its French national federation, headed by IMMAF Board Director Bertrand Amoussou, and other stakeholders in the sport, IMMAF has campaigned long and hard for the legalization and governance of MMA in France.”

[lawrence-related id=34620,29939,28211]

Brown also said that, while the presence of one of the sport’s major global promotions in France is a big development, it also opens the door for the sport to be more professionally managed and regulated from the grassroots up as MMA receives official recognition in France.

“Professional events reflect just the tip of the iceberg, as we continue to work with the newly formed French MMA Federation, under French boxing, to develop structures for the sport such as training pathways, coaches and officials licensing, and so on,” he explained. “We look forward to seeing MMA flourish in France now, as a well-regulated sport that puts its participants first.”
