Video: Bellator 246 kicks off with yet another fight ended via foul
Davion Franklin’s illegal punch to the back of the head ended his fight with Ras Hyland, but got neither a DQ nor a point deduction.
There must be something in the water in Uncasville, Conn., this weekend.
The opening bout of Saturday night’s Bellator 246, the second half of back-to-back fight cards, came to a halt late in the third round when [autotag]Davion Franklin[/autotag] wound up and drilled [autotag]Ras Hylton[/autotag] in the back of the head with a downward right hand and knocked him loopy.
The doctor at Mohegan Sun Arena ended things after checking on Hylton (6-5 MMA, 1-1 BMMA), who was already a bloody mess before the fight ending-sequence in the heavyweight matchup.
For those keeping track, it marked the third fight out of nine that came to a premature conclusion due to fouls. Friday night at Bellator 245, Tyrell Fortune landed a low knee to Jack May that ended their fight in a no contest. Then, on the main card, an all-time foul sequence happened when Raymond Daniels twice delivered spinning back kicks below the belt to Peter Stanonik, ending that fight in a no contest as well.
[lawrence-related id=551823,551434,551016]
For whatever reason, referee Dan Miragliotta chose to rule the foul unintentional, despite the fact Hyland had turned his back several seconds prior. That meant the fight could not end in a disqualification, and since it was in the third round, the fight went to the scorecards. Franklin (2-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) won the bout by technical decision on scores of 30-27 across the board, which further meant the foul was not deemed worthy of a point deduction.
It’s all hard to figure, but it’s been that type of weekend.
Check out the video below and judge for yourself:
After completely gassing himself out in the first, Davion Franklin hit Ras Hylton with an illegal punch to the back of the head in the third. Because it was far enough into the fight, Franklin still ended up winning 30-27 by technical decision. #Bellator246 pic.twitter.com/DafO4bzGZl

Bellator’s Scott Coker says he’s reached out to Brock Lesnar’s team, but many unknowns remain
Scott Coker thinks Brock Lesnar in Bellator could logistically happen – if Lesnar is a free agent and is interested.
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – To Scott Coker, a lot of questions need to be answered before he can give a full assessment of the likelihood of [autotag]Brock Lesnar[/autotag] fighting in Bellator.
That said, if Lesnar (5-3 MMA) is a free agent (which recent reports state he is), and if he is interested in returning to fighting, Coker thinks Bellator could pull it off – especially with Fedor Emelianenko on his roster.
Since the recent reports surfaced, Coker said he’s reached out to Lesnar’s side to let them know they’re here if he’s contractually free, interested, and wants to talk business.
“The situation with Brock Lesnar is I don’t even know if here’s a free agent,” Coker told MMA Junkie following his CBS Sports press conference Friday. “I don’t even know if he wants to fight. I don’t know what his situation is. I reached out and talked to them and said, ‘Hey, if Brock wants to fight Fedor, we have the guy who could be the fight that never happened.’ We’ll see if that happens. We’ll see if that’s something he’s serious about. Only Brock knows.”
If Lesnar is interested in fighting in Bellator, Coker is confident he could make it happen. While Lesnar would not be a cheap commodity, Coker predicted those high up in Viacom, Showtime, and beyond would see the return.
“If he was available, I’m sure we could make a deal,” Coker said. “I’d go right to our CEO, Bob Bakish, and talk to him about it. I’d say, ‘This is a great opportunity.’ I would bring Stephen Espinoza (and) David Nevins in the mix because it’d probably be a big commitment, but that’s a big piece of business as well.”

Lesnar has not competed since UFC 200 in July 2016, when he defeated Mark Hunt via unanimous decision. The victory was later overturned after Lesnar tested positive for clomiphene. Shortly thereafter, the UFC announced Lesnar had retired for the second time in six years.
Bellator returns this week with back-to-back events at the “Fightsphere.” Bellator 246 takes place Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., with a main card set to air on Paramount and stream on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie. Friday, Bellator 245 goes down in the same venue.

Scott Coker responds to Dana White’s comments on ex-UFC talent in Bellator: ‘That’s a lie’
Bellator president Scott Coker says Dana White is bending the truth when it comes to how former UFC fighters landed on his roster.
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Bellator president Scott Coker says Dana White’s recent comments about ex-UFC fighters joining Bellator aren’t accurate.
In August, a debate was sparked with fans and media alike when Coker proclaimed Bellator’s light heavyweight division is superior to its UFC counterpart. The comments came after Jon Jones vacated his UFC title to move up to heavyweight. White was amused and called Coker “cute” after making such a statement.
White said the majority of Bellator’s 205-pound division, such as former champ Ryan Bader, and Friday’s Bellator 245 headliners Phil Davis and Lyoto Machida, were let go from the UFC at the company’s decision.
Coker disagreed with that notion and said White is incorrect when speaking to MMA Junkie on Friday following the conclusion of his CBS Sports Network announcement press conference.
“We do have the best 205-pound division on the planet, bar none,” Coker told MMA Junkie. “When you think about the fighters that we have, tonight, Phil and Machida, then you have (Vadim) Nemkov. I think Gegard (Mousasi) will eventually move up to 205 because he told me he wants to move up to 205. … That group has become a really healthy, robust division for us.
“Ryan Bader and Phil Davis, or anyone that’s come over from the UFC, they’ve come over in free agency. It’s not that they come over here just because they got kicked out. That’s a lie. The truth is they were free agents and they wanted to shop their (worth) and we offered them a better deal so they came over here. These guys are prizefighters. This is not something they do just for fun. These are athletes of the highest level and they are prizefighters. If can come here and you’re going to get a better deal, why wouldn’t you come to Bellator? If you have a better deal there, then stay there and do your thing. As far as being kicked out of certain organizations, that’s a lie.”
[lawrence-related id=548631,548243,547898]
Coker didn’t appear interested in getting into a war of words with White, who he briefly crossed paths with as colleagues after Zuffa bought the now-defunct Strikeforce in March 2011. The two promoters have seldom spoken on one another since Coker’s non-compete clause expired and he was hired by Bellator. Coker said he’s focused on running his business – not what the UFC is doing.
“Look, he’s doing his thing and we’re doing our thing,” Coker said. “It is what it is and you know how he is. We’re going to continue down the path and keep doing our thing and at least he didn’t say I was ugly.”
Since the two sides shared their opinions, there’s been plenty of discussion from MMA fans and pundits about potential cross-promotional matchups, and champions from each organization have gone after each other online, too.
There’s one thing Coker is confident of, though, and that’s the Bellator brand continues to gain a foothold in the MMA space with many more big things still on the horizon.
“This organization is growing and this organization has resources,” Coker said. “You can see with the move to CBS Sports Network and there will be other opportunities for us inside the family of platforms here at this company. To me, we’re going to make the right decisions and keep growing the brand with fighters. We’re a very good star identifier and I think we’re the best at identifying new stars and building new stars and that’s what we’re going to continue to do. Every day when I wake up, we’re not thinking about those guys. We’re thinking about what we’re doing and focused how we want to grow this product.”

Once on WWE’s radar, Davion Franklin explains how he entered Bellator before even having a fight
Davion Franklin, the second Jackson Wink/Mata Leon scholarship recipient explains how it took zero fights for him to get into Bellator.
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Heavyweight [autotag]Davion Franklin[/autotag] will compete in the Bellator cage for the second time on Saturday. In fact, it’ll be the second time he’s competed in any cage.
Franklin (1-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) never partook in an amateur or professional fight prior to his Bellator debut in February, which he won by first-round TKO – an unusual feat.
Franklin grew up playing football and wrestling and partook in both in junior college. As his collegiate athletic career came to an end, Franklin went down the path of WWE recruitment after being scouted by a pro wrestling legend.
“I made it to the national tournament my freshman year of college,” Franklin told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “Literally, Gerry Brisco, after one of my matches, came up to me and I acted like I didn’t know who he was. And before I knew it, I was just in talks with him all the time. They had me go to Texas and train with Booker T for a little bit. But then again, I was just a kid at the time. I took a lot of the opportunities I had for granted.”
While the WWE path never panned out, Franklin is happy he landed in MMA. In the end, he thinks his competitive nature will fair better in a sport where he’s always trying to win.
“I’m an athlete (and) I’m a competitor,” Franklin said. “I don’t really know how I would feel being the person I am if someone told me I have to go out there and lose in front of everybody and not really have a choice in that. This is the real deal Holyfield. I definitely appreciated MMA much more than any other sport.”
[lawrence-related id=550825,550801,550788]
Franklin, 26, is one of two fighters to receive the Mata Leon-Jackson Wink scholarship, alongside his training partner Bellator light heavyweight Christian Edwards.
“With the Mata Leon scholarship, they basically make sure that basically your living arrangements are accommodated while you just focus on MMA exclusively – no outside jobs or nothing like that,” Franklin said. “I think that’s what that entails until you get to a point like where I’m at right now, where you don’t 100 percent need it.”
Saturday night, Franklin will make his sophomore walk to the promotion’s cage at Bellator 246 when he takes on Ras Hylton (6-4 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). Like his first fight, Franklin is setting out to prove he’s a different and unique beast, who’s a high-level fast-learner.
“I’ll leave no room for questioning,” Franklin said. “A lot of people have questions like, ‘Oh, how does he get to Bellator without having any fights? How does that work?’ And no one knows who (I am). I’m going to show you guys this is how I’m in Bellator without having any fights. My second fight ever is in Bellator. I’m not on the same level as a lot of these guys. No one is like me. I’m going to go out there and prove it Saturday night.”
Bellator 246 takes place at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card simulcasts on Paramount Network and DAZN after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Neiman Gracie predicting grappling war with Jon Fitch at Bellator 246
It’s been more than a year since Neiman Gracie suffered his first professional loss, and he is anxious to show his improvement.
It’s been more than a year since [autotag]Neiman Gracie[/autotag] suffered his first professional loss, but the Brazilian submission ace is anxious to show his improvement.
“Thankfully, I managed to have an excellent preparation for this fight,” Gracie told MMA Junkie. “I managed to do my entire camp at master Renzo Gracie’s gym in New York City. Despite the pandemic, I found some training partners and managed to prepare very well. I got ready under Jamie Crowder, John Danaher and Renzo Gracie.”
Gracie (9-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Jon Fitch[/autotag] (32-7-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) at Bellator 246 on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Paramount and streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.
Gracie returns to action for the first time since suffering a five-round decision loss to Rory MacDonald in the semifinal of Bellator’s welterweight grand prix in June 2019. While he certainly would have preferred a victory, Gracie said he did benefit from the contest.
“It was an excellent fight,” Gracie said. “But I think I allowed him to stall from the top position for far too long. I should have tried to get up and continue fighting on the feet. But it was a great learning experience – a great fight against a great champion.”
[lawrence-related id=549969,549600]
Gracie was originally schedule to return in December, but injury forced him to withdraw from a planned Bellator 236 bout with Kiichi Kunimoto in Hawaii.
“Unfortunately, I broke my hand one week before the fight and I had to pull out,” Gracie said. “Thankfully, the hand is already back to 100 percent and I’m ready for my next bout.”
That comes Saturday in the form of Fitch, the 18-year pro who is still competing at a high level even at age 42, unbeaten since 2014. It’s an opportunity for Gracie to test himself against another grizzled veteran, and it brings the classic matchup of wrestling vs. jiu-jitsu. Gracie believes that means true excitement awaits.
“I think he’s a very tough guy and a sports legend, and even though he is older, I believe he is in a great moment in his career,” Gracie said. “I think it’s going to be a great fight – a war fought mainly through grappling.”
A win would do wonders for Gracie’s career, which had been perfect prior to the blemish. Putting a signature name on his record would again prove he’s deserving of the hype that surrounded him before the setback.
Gracie plans on capitalizing on the moment.
“I would like to thank all the fans for their support and say that I am ready to make have a great fight and put on another great show,” Gracie said.
