Niele Ivey, Hannah Hidalgo, Kylee Watson speak after Notre Dame win

Here how the Irish felt after their latest win.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Sometimes, the calendar dictates that you play a solid game. Notre Dame has final exams next week, and the women’s basketball team won’t play again until those exams are finished. That meant it was time to show Lafayette what it could do, even with injuries shortening the number of healthy bodies to eight. A 96-42 victory meant mission accomplished.

[autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag] understandably was in an upbeat mood after the win, and she brought in two of her stars to share in her postgame news conference, although there were a few more players who would have been just as worthy of meeting the media afterwards. [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag] had what’s become a typical night for her of 26 points and six steals. [autotag]Kylee Watson[/autotag] scored 14 points (eight in the third quarter) and had five rebounds.

Numerous topics were discussed in the news conference. In fact, Fighting Irish Wire got to ask the first question after Ivey’s opening statement. Here the answers to that and many of the rest of the questions that were asked:

The Irish are back!

Notre Dame finally was able to get back on the Purcell Pavilion court and compete. Purdue Northwest had the rare honor of being this year’s exhibition opponent for a Division I powerhouse.

It’s unlikely the Pride had any expectations of winning, which they realistically shouldn’t have. If anything, it was an honor to have the chance to lose to the Irish, 110-48.

[autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag], this year’s freshman phenom, led everybody with 23 points and seven assists. [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] was just behind Hidalgo in the scoring column with 22 points and came within a rebound of a double-double.

[autotag]Becky Obinma[/autotag] completed the double-double with a line of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Also reaching double figures in scoring for the Irish were [autotag]Maddy Westbeld[/autotag] (17), [autotag]Cassandre Prosper[/autotag] (15) and [autotag]Natalija Marshall[/autotag] (11).

[autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] was on the bench as she continues to recover from the knee injury she suffered late last season. The timeline for her return remains unclear, but hopefully, it won’t be too long of a wait.

Notre Dame gets Pepperdine center Becky Obinma from transfer portal

The Irish have someone for the middle.

Last season, Notre Dame had transfer center in [autotag]Lauren Ebo[/autotag], and she played a key role en route to the ACC regular-season championship. [autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag] has opted to play that card again for the 2023-24 season, looking to the transfer portal for a center again. This time, she has landed [autotag]Becky Obinma[/autotag] from Pepperdine.

For the past two seasons with the Waves and one season at TCU, Obinma has averaged 5.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 0.9 blocks a game. She has yet to face an ACC opponent in her collegiate career, so this will be completely new territory for her. It will be new for the Irish, too, as she’s the only true center currently on the roster.

Ivey said the following about Obinma:

“I’m thrilled to officially welcome Becky to our Notre Dame family! Becky brings experience, athleticism and depth to the post position. She has a great motor and contagious energy on and off the court that will fit perfectly with our team. I’m looking forward to adding her post presence and speed in the open court to enhance our offensive capabilities.”

Here’s hoping this arrangement works out well for both her and the Irish.
