Bears won’t publicly name starting QB prior to season opener vs. Lions

Matt Nagy says he won’t publicly name a starting quarterback between Trubisky and Foles before the Bears take on the Lions in Week 1.

With no preseason games for the 2020 season, instead of facing the San Francisco 49ers for what would’ve been their third preseason game, the Chicago Bears made their first appearance at Soldier Field on Saturday for a scrimmage among themselves.

The media wasn’t allowed to record or update what was going on in the scrimmage due to the teams policy, but they were able to talk to the coaches and players after the game.

The big topic so far in the off-season has been the quarterback competition between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles. Head coach Matt Nagy gave an update on his decision so far.

Nagy says he won’t publicly name a starting quarterback before the Bears take on the Detroit Lions in Week 1. The decision will be made internally but not publicly.

The competition for the starting job has been heating up getting closer to the start of the regular season. There’s been comments on Trubisky improving and Foles being comfortable in the system.

The reason for not making it public could be to avoid the media attention and have the Lions prepare for either quarterback. But, nonetheless, the Bears and Lions kick off in two weeks and are still waiting to see who will be under center.

WATCH: Cordarrelle Patterson finds the end zone in Bears scrimmage

It’s hard not to get excited watching Cordarrelle Patterson finding the end zone in this highlight from Saturday’s scrimmage.

The Chicago Bears were supposed to be hosting the San Francisco 49ers for their third preseason game on Saturday afternoon. Instead, the Bears held their second scrimmage of training camp, simulating a real game as players suited up in their game-day jerseys and hit the gridiron at Soldier Field.

While the media hasn’t been able to live tweet the scrimmage, the Bears Twitter account did share this highlight from practice, which features a speedy Cordarrelle Patterson finding the end zone. And it’s hard not to get excited seeing the Bears back at Soldier Field — even if it’s only a scrimmage.

The Bears have been adamant about getting Patterson more involved in the offense this season, which is exactly what you should do when you have a dynamic playmaker on your team.

While Patterson will continue his kick return duties on special teams, it looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot more Patterson on offense — whether at receiver or running back.

Patterson has been working with the running backs during training camp, a position that he’s been utilized at dating back to his time with the New England Patriots.

Every time Patterson has the ball in his hands, he’s a threat to make a play or find the end zone like he did in practice. Which is why you’re likely to see a lot more Patterson on offense in 2020.
