Bears 53-man roster: List of players who have been cut

The Bears’ 53-man roster is set. Here’s a look at the players who didn’t make the cut.

The Chicago Bears have assembled their initial 53-man roster, which features a few surprises but shook out pretty much how everyone expected it.

There were a handful of players who made a case for a roster spot, but they didn’t make the cut. After forming the 53-man roster, Chicago will start putting together their practice squad, which should feature some of those names who just missed the cut.

With the Bears being first in waiver order, the initial 53-man roster won’t necessarily be the final roster heading into Chicago’s Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers.

Here’s a look at the players who the Bears cut as they assembled their 53-man roster:

Chicago Bears announce initial 53-man roster

The Bears have established their initial 53-man roster ahead of the 2023 regular season, but changes are likely coming.

Following a couple days worth of cuts, the Chicago Bears have finalized their initial 53-man roster, which now includes new offensive lineman Dan Feeney.

That included some notable cuts, including quarterback P.J. Walker, defensive end Trevis Gipson, cornerback Kindle Vildor and offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood.

Chicago placed wide receiver Isaiah Ford on injured reserve.

Keep in mind, this initial 53-man roster is subject to change as waiver wire claims are made and other players are moved around, including the possibility of left guard Teven Jenkins landing on injured reserve.

The Bears have top waiver wire priority, which general manager Ryan Poles has already exercised this summer. There will be some top talent for him to choose from as he looks to assemble the regular-season roster.

With that in mind, here’s a look at Bears’ the initial 53-man roster:

Where are the Bears in the waiver wire order?

There are a slew of players on the waiver wire that might interest the Bears. So it’s good news Chicago has top priority.

The Chicago Bears trimmed their roster to 53 players on Tuesday, and it’s almost time for them to start building their 16-player practice squad and potentially make some changes to their roster.

While the Bears released a handful of players, so did the rest of the NFL, which means there are a slew of players on the waiver wire that might interest the Bears, especially at areas of concern like offensive line, safety and defensive line.

But teams can’t just go out and sign any player. They’ll need to hope that another team ahead of them in the waiver order doesn’t also want that player. But Chicago is sitting in the top spot in the waiver wire priority, giving them any pick of players to claim.

The waiver claim deadline is Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT.  Those waiver claims will be announced an hour later and then teams can begin filling out their practice squads.

Here’s the order of the waiver priority list, which is identical to the 2023 draft order:

Bears release Nathan Peterman, Tyson Bagent in line for QB2

With the Bears releasing Nathan Peterman, rookie Tyson Bagent is officially QB2.

The Chicago Bears continue to trim their roster down to 53 players, which includes the surprise cuts of quarterback P.J. Walker and offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood.

Following Walker’s release, it all but guaranteed undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent a spot on the 53-man roster. Now, it appears he’s secured the backup quarterback job.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Bears are releasing quarterback Nathan Peterman. The team wants Peterman back on the practice squad.

Many speculated Chicago would carry three quarterbacks on the roster, with Peterman serving as a veteran presence alongside Bagent. But it seems as if the Bears are confident in having Bagent serve as the backup for starter Justin Fields.

Bagent had an impressive training camp and preseason, where he created competition for that backup job behind Fields.

Now that Chicago doesn’t have to carry three quarterbacks, it frees up an additional roster spot elsewhere.

Bears waive rookie DT Travis Bell

Bears rookie Travis Bell is expected to join the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The Chicago Bears continue to trim their roster to 53 players ahead of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. CT deadline.

Outside of quarterback P.J. Walker and offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, there haven’t been any big surprises. But there have been some tough cuts as general manager Ryan Poles assembles his roster.

Seventh-round rookie defensive tackle Travis Bell, a feel good story from the NFL draft, has been waived, according to Tom Pelissero.

Bell, the first player to be drafted out of Kennesaw State, is expected to be brought back on the practice squad, if he clears waivers.

Bell wasn’t expected to make the 53-man roster in what’s a crowded defensive line room. Four defensive tackles are projected to make the cut in veterans Justin Jones and Andrew Billings, as well as rookies Gervon Dexter Sr. and Zacch Pickens.

The Chicago Bears are in the midst of trimming their roster to 53 players, where general manager Ryan Poles has some difficult decisions to make ahead of Tuesday’s deadline at 3 p.m. CT.

There have already been some surprise cuts, including quarterback P.J. Walker and offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood. Chicago also traded a 2024 sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for veteran guard Dan Feeney, who adds depth and experience along the offensive line.

Following the Feeney trade — along with initial official and reported cuts — here is my final (I swear) projection for the Bears’ 53-man roster:

10 hardest cuts from our final Bears’ 53-man roster projection

Here were the toughest cuts from our Bears 53-man roster projection ahead of Tuesday’s cuts.

With the preseason in the books, roster cutdowns are looming.

The Chicago Bears need to trim their roster to 53 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. That means there are going to be some difficult cuts for them to make as they fill out their team.

Here were the toughest cuts from our latest 53-man roster prediction, which include some former starters, veterans in contract years and recent draft picks.

When do the Bears have to make final roster cuts?

The Bears have already started to trim their roster to 53 players.

With the preseason in the books, the Chicago Bears have already started to trim down their roster (which we’re tracking here).

The Bears will have to trim their roster to 53 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m.. Unlike last year, there is just one cutdown date, following the final preseason game, on Aug. 29, where all 32 teams must narrow this roster from 90 to 53 players.

After teams have narrowed their roster to 53 players, they will have until 11 a.m. CT to claim players placed on waivers during final cuts. Those will be announced shortly after the deadline.

Chicago is first in waiver priority after finishing the 2023 season with the NFL’s worst record, which means general manager Ryan Poles will have his pick of players.

Once players have cleared waivers, teams can begin assembling their 16-player practice squad starting at 11 a.m. CT on Wednesday.
