Film Room: Examining Bears QB Justin Fields’ most impressive plays vs. Patriots

We’re taking a look at some of the standout plays from Justin Fields in the Bears’ Week 7 win vs. Patriots.

There was a lot to like about the Chicago Bears’ 33-14 win over the New England Patriots on Monday.

Specifically, quarterback Justin Fields looked as comfortable as he has since being drafted, and the offense seemed to start revolving around his unique skillset.

Let’s take a look at some of the standout plays from Chicago’s second-year quarterback.

Player Spotlight: Bears RB David Montgomery’s elusiveness and vision are out of this world

While very little went right for the Bears in their Week 2 loss to the Packers, David Montgomery provided a spark in the run game.

While very little went right for the Chicago Bears in their Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers, one thing that was evident was the ground game was working.

David Montgomery accumulated 122 yards on 15 carries, and continues to be one of the most slept on talents across the NFL. Let’s take a look at a few of his best runs from Sunday night.

The Bears rode Montgomery on their opening drive. Here, the run a toss right with fullback Khari Blasingame leading the way and clearing the path for Montgomery, who explodes through the hole and sheds a tackle to get a solid gain.

The same drive here and good patience being shown by Montgomery. He attempts to go up the middle, sees nothing, and then breaks it outside for a good gain inside the five.

Now, Montgomery misses a big hole in the A gap. However, he makes up for it by pulling off a spin move in traffic and jump cutting through a hole. The shifty fourth-year man from Iowa State then breaks several tackles on his way to a big gain on an elusive and angry run.

Again, excellent patience here from Montgomery. Very resembling of a young Le’Veon Bell. The Bears pull left guard Cody Whitehair who leads the way for Montgomery to the outside. Whitehair busts inside a gap, where Montgomery follows, breaks a tackle, and picks up good yardage.

The quickness and agility of Montgomery is astounding. He stops on a dime while running to his right, immediately breaks to his left, and repeats the cycle on his way to his second best run of the night

Montgomery takes everything we’ve seen thus far and roles it into one on this play. Patience as he approaches the line of scrimmage looking for a lane, finding a gap behind Whitehair, shedding multiple tackles, juking and shaking his way to a gain of 28. Outstanding run.

Montgomery was toying with the Packers defense all night. If this type of play carries over into Sunday, expect Chicago to ride him once more.

Tarik Cohen vows to stop running sideways, breaks down his game film

RB Tarik Cohen took some time Saturday to break down some of his game film, where he promised to make some changes to his play.

For the past three seasons, Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen has dazzled with incredible runs, catches and game-breaking returns that earned him All-Pro honors.

He’s also had frustrating moments in which he’s failed to gain positive yards more than a few occasions, resulting in stalled offensive drives. Now, entering his fourth season and final season in his rookie contract, “The Human Joystick” promises to make some changes to his play.

On Saturday morning, Cohen posted on his Twitter page that he was done running east and west, responding to critics who pointed out how he wasn’t getting upfield enough. “Imma stop running sideways this year. Issa wrap,” he tweeted using a couple of emojis.

The electric running back also interacted with fans, insisting they post videos of when they believed he screwed up on the field. Clips consisted of his memorable punt return touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers during his rookie season, to missed opportunities last year. Cohen then broke down his thinking and why those plays did or didn’t work.

Finally, during one of those interactions, Cohen revealed he prefers to be utilized in power and man schemes. This may come as a surprise given his ability to explode off the edge and beat defenders in a foot race, but the former North Carolina A&T back believes running inside will catch defenders off guard since he’s known for breaking runs off on the outside.

These clips are a reminder of how dangerous Cohen can be, but how quickly he can be shut down if a play goes sideways. He continues to be an integral part of the Bears offense, as he accounted for 170 and 143 touches in the air and on the ground in 2018 and 2019, respectively. While his touches didn’t dramatically drop off, his yardage did.

After totaling 1,169 yards from scrimmage during the Bears’ 12-4 playoff run two years ago, Cohen managed only 669 yards last season. His yards per catch also plummeted, going from 10.2 to 5.8. He had the reps, but didn’t do as much with them as he used to.

Cohen’s admission shows he knows what he needs to do to return to his game-changing self and his film breakdown proves he has a plan when the ball gets in his hands. All he needs to do is put it all together and he’ll continue to be a handful for opposing defenses.

Look no further than his performance last season, where he managed to have one of his best career seasons — his second 1,000-yard season — despite questionable quarterback play and an overall abysmal offense.
