Projected second-round pick Jalen Bridges ‘forever grateful’ to enter NBA draft

Bridges was named to the All-Big 12 third team last season after averaging 12.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 blocks.

Jalen Bridges previously tested the predraft process, and the former Baylor forward believes that experience is helping him this year in workouts and interviews with teams.

Bridges played the first two years of his college career at West Virginia before transferring to Baylor. He declared for the NBA draft after his junior year with the Bears before withdrawing and returning to play this past season.

The 6-foot-8 forward competed in the G League Elite Camp and worked out with the Charlotte Hornets last year. Bridges, speaking Thursday after working out with the Golden State Warriors, said that experience helped prepare him this time around.

I feel like last year really, really, really helped me. It was the first time I really got to be around professionals because, in West Virginia, there are not a lot of guys who have done what I’m trying to do. Being around guys in the league, seeing how they carry themselves on and off the court, seeing their habits and just taking that and making them my habits and taking them back to school with me helped me be ready for this moment and perform in these workouts.

Bridges was named to the All-Big 12 third team after averaging 12.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 blocks on 41.2% shooting from 3-point range. He registered five 20-point games, including a season-high 32 points and nine rebounds on March 4.

The 23-year-old was among the 80-plus prospects invited to compete in the draft combine last month in Chicago, Illinois. He showed off his overall skill set in the 5-on-5 scrimmages, averaging 10.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in two games.

Bridges projects to check several boxes at the next level, as a forward who can space the floor and defend multiple positions with his 6-foot, 10-inch wingspan. He believes those attributes will enable him to make an immediate impact.

“I feel like the aspects that are most translatable on Day 1 would probably be my shooting and defense and my activity,” Bridges said. “I know how to play. I feel like what I would need to work on, not necessarily my ballhandling in general but just like the angles on my drives and little minor details like that.”

He is currently projected to be a second-round pick. However, he’ll be able to improve his draft stock in interviews and workouts throughout the rest of the predraft process. He will have other visits scheduled ahead of the draft on June 26-27.

After playing four years in college, Bridges is appreciative of the opportunity to test the draft. He is eager to showcase himself in front of teams and begin the next journey of his career.

“It is easy to say when you’re a kid that you want to play in the NBA, but it is a whole ‘nother thing to dedicate your life to this craft and sacrifice friends, family and fun — your freedom basically — to chase after a very exclusive club, which is one of the hardest things to do,” Bridges said. “I’m forever grateful and truly blessed to be in this position and have opportunities like these.”

Florida softball heading to WCWS after beating Baylor in Super Regionals

Florida outlasted Baylor in a brutal battle on Sunday to reach the Women’s College World Series.

It took the full three games but Florida’s softball team is heading to the Women’s College World Series for the 12th time in program history and first since the 2022 season after defeating the Baylor Bears in the Gainesville Super Regionals on Sunday, 5-3.

[autotag]Keagan Rothrock[/autotag] pitched her second-straight complete game while [autotag]Mia Williams[/autotag] hit an early two-run homer to help the Gators fight off a pesky Baylor team that reached the semifinals as an at-large bid.

Florida jumped out to an early lead in this one, scoring a trio of runs in the bottom of the first inning; the two teams then matched one-run efforts in the next frame while putting up goose eggs in the third and fourth innings. Baylor threatened with a run in the top of the fifth, but Florida answered in the bottom sixth and ultimately closed the door.

The Orange and Blue improved to 25-12 in NCAA Super Regional play and 6-1 in Super Regional Game 3s. Looking ahead to the championships, UF holds an overall record of 27-20 (.574) in Oklahoma City and will be looking for its third national title.

Florida will face fifth-seeded Oklahoma State in the WCWS opener on Thursday, May 30, with the start time still to be determined. The Cowgirls defeated the Gators 3-0 in a regular-season meeting on Feb. 19 in Gainesville.

Florida drops Game 2 to Baylor, forces Super Regional rubber match

Florida softball’s 12-game winning streak — and seven-straight in postseason play — came to an abrupt end on Saturday.

Florida softball’s 12-game winning streak — and seven-straight in postseason play — came to an abrupt end on Saturday in the Gainesville Super Regionals inside Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, where the Gators fell to the Baylor Bears, 5-2.

The two teams will meet one more time on Sunday for the rubber match that decides who plays for the national championship.

The Bears opened up with a three-run home run in the first to give them all they needed to prevail over the Orange and Blue. [autotag]Keagan Rothrock[/autotag], who had started the previous nine straight games and had not lost a decision in six weeks, was simply unable to solve Baylor’s bats early on.

At the plate, Florida was paced by [autotag]Skylar Wallace[/autotag], who went went 3-for-3 batting third in the order. On the other end of the spectrum, the Gators Nos. 1, 2 and 4 hitters combined to go 0-for-9 with three strikeouts.

Florida and Baylor will meet in their Game 3 matchup on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. ET, with the winner advancing to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, next week. The Gators are 10-2 all-time in home Super Regionals, including 3-0 when the series has gone to a third game.

Looking back at Colorado’s history against Baylor

This summer, we’ll be looking at Colorado’s history against each team in the new-look Big 12. First up: Baylor.

The Colorado Buffaloes have completed their last season in the Pac-12 and will triumphantly return to the Big 12 Conference in 2024. We are looking back to mark the occasion and see how CU football has fared against its former Big 12 rivals. First up on the Buffs’ Big 12 slate next season is the Baylor Bears.

Colorado joined the Big Seven in 1947 and stuck around when the conference expanded into the Big 12 with the addition of Baylor and three other schools. CU had played Baylor out of conference a handful of times, going 5-4 before meeting as Big 12 foes for the first time in 1998.

The Buffaloes dominated their early Big 12 matchups with Baylor, winning the first three games by a combined score of 89-16. However, CU has struggled as of late against the Bears, who have won three of the last four matchups.

All time, the Buffaloes own a slight 9-7 advantage over Baylor in 16 matchups.

Colorado will look to take further control of the series when the teams meet on Sept. 21 in Boulder.
