Eight grader wins high school varsity basketball game at the buzzer

An eighth grader scores a dramatic game-winner in a high school basketball game.

Kyndall Johnson, an eighth grader, scored an impressive buzzer-beater to lead her high school team in Kentucky to a hard-fought road win on Thursday night.

A guard, Johnson is one of two eighth-grade prospects who play for Bracken County (Brooksville, Kentucky). The basket clinched a 53-52 win for Bracken County over a very strong Fleming County (Flemingsburg, Kentucky).

Now, before going into Johnson’s clutch play, let’s talk for a minute about the lead-up to the game-winner.

Nicole Archibald, the starting point guard and a junior, received the in-bounds with 4.6 seconds and her team down by one point. She does well to avoid the trap and carry the ball up the court. With a third defender closing in on her, Archibald had the vision to look up and see a wide-open Johnson.

From there, it was ice water in her veins from Johnson to lay up the game-winner:

That’s a well-coached team. Bracken County couldn’t have executed that play any better.

Youth player makes half-court, over-the-head buzzer beater for win

A Cincinnati-area elementary school player made a wild, over-the-head buzzer-beater from near half-court to send 2022 out on a high note.

This youth basketball player ended 2022 on just about the highest of notes an athlete can.

Basketball players of all ages dream of hitting a game-winning, but this shot exceeds the wildest dreams of most. Trailing by two points with the final seconds ticking off the clock, the young student got trapped just past the halfcourt line with his back to the basket.

He did the only thing that came to mind: heaved it over his head. Everyone froze as they watched the ball sail toward the hoop, with the shooter watching with the same over-his-head pose in which he released the shot.

Somehow, someway, it went in.

According to WCPO9, a news outlet based in Cincinnati, this game was between St. Jude and Visitation elementary schools. It was a low-scoring affair, but the 29-28 St. Jude victory was capped off with some magic.

Bring on 2023.
